“Congratulations to the members of our two jazz bands and jazz combo on a wonderful day at the Purdue University Jazz Festival. We were able to listen to some world-class jazz musicians and learn from some wonderful jazz educators. We also heard MHS Alum (Class of 2021) Isabel Sioson performing with the Purdue Jazz Band on guitar!
Mundelein Jazz Orchestra received 1st place in the 2nd band division. *Rosa Bonilla received an outstanding soloist award for her wonderful bari saxophone feature.

Mundelein Jazz Ensemble received 1st place in the Large High School Division. *Neil Martin received an outstanding soloist award for his alto saxophone solos.
5Essentials Parent Survey
On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.
These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
We value your opinions about the operations of the high school and are looking for your input. This is your chance to provide input concerning your children’s education. MHS benefits from a strong response rate from parents in order for us to access to the data from the survey. The survey is available to MHS parents now and the deadline to complete the survey is March 22 but we encourage you to complete it as soon as you can.

Diversity Awareness and Affirmation SEL Presentation
As posted here last week, on January 25, 2022, your student viewed the fifth of eight wellness-related presentations this school year. This month’s presentation serves as an introduction to research-based information about diversity awareness and affirmation. Learning and practicing these strategies and skills are essential for growth in individuals. Conversations about diversity benefit school culture, the community, as well as global humanity. At the end of the presentation are numerous resources available to all. You may access this presentation in your student’s MHS email, on the D120 website, the D120 Facebook page, and the Principal’s Blog. Please send immediate questions or concerns to Krysta Penuel, School Psychologist.
Lunch spaces
In order to comply with the new IDPH guidelines, we are opening the auditorium as a lunch space beginning Tuesday, January 18. Any student can choose to eat in the auditorium if they wish. All seating in the auditorium will be 6 feet apart at all times. Students may also choose to eat in the Study Cafe or the cafeteria. Also, students may leave campus for lunch if they have met the criteria to do so.

The Varsity Dance team punched their ticket to state this past weekend coming in 4th at IHSA Sectionals hosted by Deerfield H.S.. The Mustangs will travel to Grossinger Motors Arena to perform at the IHSA State finals. Mustangs will perform @ 5:27pm. Best of luck!

MHS JV - Keep your eyes on this team! Our JV DANCE TEAM finished its competition season on Sunday at the state JV Challenge, hosted by Glenbrook South H.S. In 6 outings this team brought home a 4th, three 2nds & a 1st place trophy against the most talented JV teams we've ever seen. Nothing stopped these dancers - they kept their chins (& legs!) up through emergency practices & last-min choreography changes (COVID) & never blinked. They qualified for the final Top 10 on Sunday & tied for 8th place. Less than 3 points from 2nd place & in a group of 5 teams separated by less than 1 point.

Boys Swim/Dive
Coaches Corner: Rahul Sethna
The Boys Swimming and Diving placed 2nd at the 17 team invite at Buffalo Grove HS on Saturday. The Mustangs narrowly missed the title in losing to West Chicago 313-310. Top 6 finishers included: Johnny Anno (Diving), Aaron Anastos (50 Free, 100 Free), Michael Romero (100 Fly, 100 Breast), Edwin Serrano (200 and 500 Free) and the 400 Free Relay team of Cameron Gilbert, Matt Willis, Alec Sethna and Edwin Serrano. Event Champions included: Omar Fathallah (100 Free, 2nd in the 50 Free), 200 Medley Relay (Cameron Gilbert, Michael Romero, Omar Fathallah, Aaron Anastos), and the 200 Free Relay (Omar Fathallah, Aaron Anastos, Edwin Serrano, Michael Romero). The #3 state ranked Mustangs clash with the #1 state ranked team Stevenson Patriots for the NSC regular season title on Monday as both teams are undefeated heading into the meet.

Girls Bowling
Coaches Corner: Vanessa Prorok
Last week, Mundelein Girls Bowling beat Waukegan. On Saturday, the Varsity team competed at the Wauconda Invite. Although we didn't place, the girls all learned valuable lessons to prepare us for Conference and Regionals that will be coming up in the next week or two.

This past week has been full of lots of success for Mundelein Cheer! Both teams competed at NSC conference hosted by Waukegan High School. Varsity finished in 3rd place and JV finished in 5th! Way to go Mustangs, we are so proud of your accomplishments. Varsity is thrilled to compete at Sectionals this Saturday at Belvidere North High School. Come out to support the Mustangs in the stands, our competition time is 4:54pm! JV also competed in their final competition of the season at Huntley High School Sweetheart Invite. They placed 8th out of 9 teams, hitting a perfect routine and competing against some of the top JV teams in the state! Our JV team has been doing a GREAT job at basketball games cheering on the boys and girls teams, way to go ladies!!

Coaches Corner: Craig Stocker
MHS had their last home wrestling match against Bears from Lake Zurich. Although we were short of a win, fans saw some great wrestling. Sportsmanship winners were announced, congratulations to Lake Zurich’s Tomas Troutman and MHS’s Matt Senescu.
