Each spring, we will post the photos of seniors who are graduating with honors.  There is a great amount of public traffic during the end of the school year with various events occurring almost each night.  However, with the physical school building closed, we thought this was the next best way to honor our seniors.  Click HERE to see the presentation.

Mustang News - April 17, 2020 Friday Night Lights 2020

Friday Night Lights 2020

Friday Night Lights to focus on school/community
Mundelein High School will host a “Friday Night Lights” event on Friday, April 17 from 8 to 9 p.m. at the athletic field and throughout the community.

From 8 to 9 pm the athletic stadium lights will be turned on in support of students and community groups. Residents may participate by turning on their front porch lights and even posting a sign on their front doors if they would like. Students, parents and community members are welcome to put their jerseys, uniforms, any MHS spirit wear,  photos, etc. on their front doors as well to show support for the many groups listed below.

Administrators will dedicate each of the four light posts to different groups through social media. The dedications will include:

Pole #1 – First responders, doctors, nurses, scientists working to keep everyone healthy
Pole #2 – Mundelein community for being resilient and caring for each other during this crisis.
Pole #3 – All MHS athletes, band, choir, theatre, art students, clubs and activities. We are missing and craving to see all of your performances and events!
Pole #4 – MHS Class of 2020. You are a special group of students. We are sorry your academic, athletic and extra-curricular events have been cut short but your impact on society is just beginning. We miss you.

“The COVID-19 Virus may have stolen our spring school year from us, but it won’t diminish our support for all MHS students,” said Anthony Kroll, principal.  “Join us on Friday, April 17, for Friday Night Lights!”

Students and adults should not go to the high school during that time. Continue to practice social distancing and stay safe.

Chubin and junior Daniel Reed wrote responses to the question, “What can I do to unite our country?” Their responses earned first place for Chubin and second for Reed with cash prizes of $50 and $25, respectively. A panel of judges from Mundelein’s American Legion Auxiliary #867 and the American Legion Post #867 selected the winners. Chubin’s essay is now competing against first place essays from high schools throughout Lake County in the Legion’s District 10 region. Results are anticipated in June. The annual essay contest is open to students in grades three to 12 and is co-sponsored by the American Legion, the  American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of Illinois.

The American Legion Auxiliary and Post also selects students to represent Mundelein each year at Boys and Girls State, mock government programs presented in all

50 states. The Illini events held at Eastern Illinois University unite hundreds of seniors from across the state to learn about the democratic process by offering a model for students to run for a myriad of offices, draft legislation, build coalitions and enforce Constitutional procedures. Ilya Vynnyk and Giselle (Gigi) Prado will represent Mundelein High School at the week-long 2020 convocations with the hope to be selected as an Illinois “senator” at Boys and Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. In the past three years, two MHS students were selected for this honor.

Ilya Vynnyk
The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary sponsor contests and programs for students from elementary through high school, the most well-known of which is American Legion Baseball which fosters sportsmanship, patriotism and encourages active citizenship. In addition to the Americansim essay and Boys and Girls State programs, The American Legion sponsors a nation-wide oratorical contest. Recently it was announced that Mundelein High School’s senior MacKenzie Stewart placed fourth in state at the Illinois 2020 High School Oratorical Contest. Many of the programs, established in the 1920s and 1930s, provide scholarship opportunities.

MacKenzie Stewart
MHS senior places fourth in state at American Legion Oratorical Contest
MacKenzie Stewart, Mundelein High School senior, took fourth place at the Illinois 2020 High School Oratorical Contest sponsored by the Illinois American Legion. The event, titled “A Constitutional Speech Contest,” included nine student competitors from communities throughout the state and was held March 7 in Springfield. Stewart’s contest wins total $1,450 accumulated from a progression of local, regional and state oratorical contests that began in January.

The oratorical format invites participants to extemporaneously respond to a topic relating to constitutional amendments. The questions are supplied in advance so students can research and write responses. Stewart’s speeches reflected her thorough understanding of the Constitution, “I’ve committed myself to gaining a full understanding of our democracy by interning at the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office, attending American Legion Illini Girls State, through courses and by talking with politicians,” Stewart said. “I’m passionate about our democracy and hope to build a career in law and justice.”

For the local and regional contests, students prepared four speeches, three-to-five minutes in length, focusing on their knowledge of select Constitutional amendments. Students also prepared a substantial eight-to-ten minute speech focusing on citizens’ duties in relation to the constitution.  Presenters are blocked from hearing other contestant speeches. The determining speech at the state oratorical contest was eight-to-ten minutes. Stewart’s speech addressed concerns of political polarization.

Arlene Lolley, President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 867, Mundelein, encouraged Stewart to compete. “The Constitution’s wide appeal, across generations, is a testament to the currency of the document. We are honored to have student engagement from such talented students like MacKenzie,” she added. Lolley attended the Springfield contest with George Swenson, past American Legion Division Commander, in support of Stewart.

Since 1938, the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program has created an opportunity for students to earn scholarships. Across the nation more than 30,000 students participate annually.

Activities‌ ‌

Over the course of the past two weeks, MHS has announced plans to tentatively schedule spring events.  It is our goal to conduct as many of our spring activities as possible in accordance with the state government's direction.  Not only are we discussing large events such as graduation, but we are also discussion events such as Fine Arts presentations.  Please be patient with the process as MHS works through these difficult puzzles.

eLearning
Progress reports will be sent soon.  Only students with a failing grade as of March 13 or an "incomplete" due to not participating in eLearning activities will be sent a progress report.  The first goal of eLearning is to keep teachers and students connected.  The second is to allow for continued learning as best as possible under the "stay at home" executive order by the governor.

Here are a few images of eLearning from this past week!
