Homecoming 2020/21
April 5-9 will be Homecoming for this school year.  Although there are some traditional events we will not be able to hold due to the pandemic, Student Leadership has worked to maintain a few elements to celebrate.

MHS Adjusts Spring Hybrid Schedule

To Our Mundelein High School Families:

As you know, we have been working on scenarios where we could have all hybrid students in the building all day, five days a week. We have worked out the details and we will begin with that schedule on Monday, April 12.  See detailed information below.

Dr. Anthony Kroll, Principal

Dr. Kevin Myers, Superintendent

The move to one student group all day, every day

  • All hybrid students will attend five days a week from 8:45 am to 3:05 pm
  • Rooms will be arranged for the new number of students
  • Lunch will take place in the gym and cafeteria to ensure proper distancing
  • Students will still be allowed to leave campus for lunch and free periods
  • Seating charts/contact tracing will continue to be a top priority
  • Until April 19, current remote students will not be allowed to move to a hybrid schedule
  • The same number of buses will run as before; each bus will pick up two routes of students as there are not enough drivers for all routes to run

Why we chose the Red/Gray schedule rather than the Eight-Period schedule

  • Past parent/student surveys indicated that the eight-period day was harder for managing the workload
  • Less movement throughout the school with fewer passing periods; easier contact tracing when needed
  • All-School lunch works better with the availability of any space being open for student lunch if needed
  • Longer classes are preferred due to technology setup for concurrent teaching and desk sanitizing
  • Longer classes allow for staff access for struggling students rather than having students stay after school

Yellow Days (Wednesdays) eliminated

  • While Yellow days will now be regular attendance days, two Yellow days will remain due to group testing
  • Yellow days (remote days for all students) are in effect on the following dates:  Wednesday, April 7 and Tuesday, April 13
  • Wednesday, April 7 – ISA Testing. All juniors are excused from school that day. It will be Synchronous/Remote for all freshmen, sophomores and seniors
  • Tuesday, April 13 – SAT Testing. All juniors are excused from school for the day.  An asynchronous option is available for teachers of freshmen, sophomores and seniors to use if they wish

Mundelein Theatre Qualifies for Virtual State Drama Competition

The Mundelein Theatre Group Interpretation (GI) team recently competed in the 2021 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Drama and Group Interpretation Tournament. The contest was held virtually, with each team recording and submitting their entries.

The Mundelein GI this year, The Further Adventures of Nick Danger-Third Eye, placed second in their sectional competition and advanced to the state tournament. Three performers were named to the All-Sectional cast – Will Gonzalez, Eli Walter and Kessler Young. The team did not advance to the final round at state, but four performers were named to the All-State cast – Madeline Demuth, Will Gonzales, Adriyanna Tesimu and Eli Walter.

Group Interpretation is a 30 minute, student-led performance of any literary work. The focal point of the performance is "out" to the audience with limited on-stage focus. The performance is minimal in nature, meaning that performers wear a uniform dress (not costumes) and build a minimalistic set. Sound effects are permitted but no lighting, specific costuming, properties or theater makeup can be used. It is an IHSA sanctioned event where schools compete against other schools with a chance to earn the opportunity to compete at a State Final tournament.

The Further Adventures of Nick Danger-Third Eye follows the story of fictional detective Nick Danger, created by the comedy troupe The Firesign Theatre. It is a parody of the hard-boiled detective story, and involves stereotypical film noir situations, including mistaken identity, betrayal and femme fatales. The GI team was made up of Kai Ackerman, Madeline Demuth, Will Gonzalez, Megan Saunders, Adriyanna Tesimu, Zoe Van Krey, Eli Walters and Kessler Young. Student assistants were Matthew Callas, Lance Evans and Mary McMurray. Mark Landuyt directed with Sara Gunther as the Associate Director.

MHS Senior, Trey Baker earns national award

During the past week, Mundelein High School senior, Trey Baker, was awarded the National

Senior Trey Baker

Educational Fest 2021 “Honoring Our Own: Educational Innovation & Leadership Award” sponsored by the National Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents and the National Alliance for Black School Educators.

“Whenever we accomplish something together, I always want to reach out and thank you for continuing to empower my journey and committing to our creative spaces that aim to inspire the next generation,” Baker said.

“This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our community standing up to be the change we wish to see. It’s a testament to the students, families, teachers, front-line workers, etc. who have shared their incredible stories with me in times of adversity but continuing to remain hopeful for the future because even in times of hardship, we’ve come together with a shared sense of purpose.”

“For our work to be recognized on a national platform proves that we don’t have to accept the world for what it is. We can make it into the world as it should be and could be by creating a new normal,” Baker explained. (A new normal) that is fairer, gives everybody opportunity, treats everyone equally, and builds bridges with people instead of dividing them. But, similar to previous key moments in history, it’s going to depend on us continuing to empower young people to go out there and rewrite what is possible.”

MHS students earn first, second place in essay contest

Mundelein High School students took first and second place among Class III Americanism Essay Contest entries submitted to the Mundelein American Legion Auxiliary and Post.  Sophomores

Sophomores Matthew Willis & Alica Brak

Matthew Willis and Alica Brak wrote responses to the question, "How to Promote Old Fashioned Patriotism While Recognizing Where We Have Fallen Short?" Their responses earned first place for Willis and second for Brak with cash prizes of $50 and $25, respectively. Judges from Mundelein’s American Legion Auxiliary #867 and  Post #867 selected the winners. Willis’ essay is now competing against first place essays from Lake County high schools in the Legion’s District 10 region. Results are anticipated in June. The annual essay contest is open to students in grades 3 to 12 and is co-sponsored by the American Legion, the  American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of Illinois.

Willis’ essay addresses the human drive to innovate and the need to harness that same drive to strive for a more just society. Both actions require commitment, education, and reflection. Brak calls on U.S. citizens to embrace their patriotic duty to minimize polarization in all levels of government, in communities and even with neighborly relations.

The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary sponsor contests and programs for students, the most well known of which is American Legion Baseball which fosters sportsmanship, patriotism and encourages active citizenship. In addition to the Americansim essay and Boys and Girls State programs, the American Legion sponsors a nation-wide oratorical contest. Many of the programs, established in the 1920s and 1930s, provide scholarship opportunities.
