National
Inventor’s Day happens only once a year on Feb 11th, but we have
months of inventing in store for Lake County. Design, Innovate, Make
and then share your creations with the CLC Engineering team. We want to see
what your students are inventing.

Competitions
Design a Logo for
Maker Faire Lake County
What image springs
to mind when you hear “Lake County”? Do you think of rollercoasters, farm
fields or the College of Lake County? As Maker Faire Lake County
approaches, we are looking for a logo that captures the spirit of our
county. Start with a 3 inch circle and select your favorite red and
blue media. It could be crayons, colored pencils or graphic design
software, your choice! Make sure to include the words "Maker Faire
Lake County" somewhere in your design. This contest is aimed at all
students 3rd grade and up as well
as community members.
3D Model a Game
Board Piece
Do you ever wish
you could redesign your favorite board game? Well, we’ve decided to tackle
one of our favorites and we would like your help. You can use any CAD
software to design the missing pieces. To enter you simply upload a screen
capture of your project and the file in *.stl format. This contest is aimed
at students from 6 grade through community college.
The two
competitions are launching on Feb 15th and
will be posted on the Maker Faire website. https://lakecounty.makerfaire.com/
INNOVATE with
Robotics
The Lake County Robotics
Competition is in full swing. Join us on Feb 23rd for a showcase that will provide the students
participating in this year’s competition a chance to show off their
progress with their robots. Students have been working since December 2020
on designing, building, and programming robots to meeting certain
requirements. From 5-6PM the 6th and 7th grade students, working with
Lego EV3 kits, will demonstrate their robots. Then, from 6-7PM, the 8th to
12th graders working on Tetrix kits will demonstrate their
robots. Attendees are welcome to ask questions and learn how to get involved
in next year's competition.
MAKE and then
share your projects at Maker Faire Lake County in April
In celebration of
Engineering Week, we will be holding two separate virtual tours of the CLC
Baxter Innovation Lab, a favorite resource of our engineering students. The
FabLab tour on Feb 24th at 7pm will focus on laser technology, circuit board routing and
vinyl printing. There will be a walk through of some current projects and
more details on the logo contest. The SHOP tour on Feb 27th at noon will focus on
traditional shop tools and milling. The Engineering club will share one of
their favorite projects over recent years and more details on the 3D
modeling contest. From 1 to 2pm there will be a short workshop on Tinkercad
for anyone new to 3D modeling. Both tours will include more information on
how can showcase your projects at the Maker Faire on April 17th. We are encouraging makers of all ages to participate.
Plan a Future in
Engineering
Join us on Feb 16th at 7pm for an information session aimed at students/parents
interested in the Engineering and Computer Science Transfer program at
CLC. Each session provides an overview of the Engineering program,
including academics, extracurricular activities like the Engineering,
Computer, and Math Clubs, as well as a tour of the Baxter Innovation Lab,
CLC's makerspace/fablab, which serves as a home for CLC Engineering (and
other) students. Information on guaranteed admission programs including
University of Illinois Engineering Pathways, UIC TAG, and the NIU program
will also be presented. The sessions will be live online via zoom during
the 2020-21 school year, and usually last between 45-60 minutes.

During his years at MHS, Rodriguez was a member of various Media Classes at, as well as a leader in the MHS Film Club for four years.
“As a teacher, I could not be more proud,” Meister said. “Given the organization, and the high quality of work/competition from around the nation, winning at this level is a true honor,” he said.
For Rodriguez to get to this level of judging, his work was first submitted to a festival in the Chicagoland area. When he placed well there his work was funneled into the Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and within that chapter/region he won. MHS Byte Club takes first place in competition
On Saturday, February 13, a few members of the Mundelein High School Byte Club participated in a national coding competition sponsored by the prestigious Colorado School of Mines. One team made up of Kajal Patel, Steffen Brown, and Peter Zakariya, won first in the state of Illinois. The competition included high school students from all over America, who were given 15 math and logic problems that had to be solved entirely with code in any language of their choice. The codes had to pass a variety of tests, from output to efficiency to time restraints.
Brown said, "It was a fun yet challenging way to spend my weekend. I was so excited to see we placed as high as we did!"

Romance & Relationships Take Center Stage at Mundelein Theatre
For their winter play offering, Mundelein Theatre is presenting LOVE/SICK, by John Cariani. The play is described as a collection of ten slightly twisted and completely hilarious short plays, which explores the pain and the joy that comes with being in love. The play is being streamed online on February 26, 27 and 28. The shows on the 26th and 27th are scheduled content, which means they play once at 7 pm on those dates. The show on the 28th is video on demand, which means that those purchasing tickets can watch the show starting at 2 pm, and can view the show as often as they want for a 48 hour time period. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.showtix4u.com/events/18905 Some of the plays contain mature content.
“This was the perfect piece for creating theatre during a pandemic,” said Jeff Harding, co-director of the show. “Each play features two actors, so we were able to give plenty of students the opportunity to perform, while keeping the rehearsal process safe.” “This collection of stories follows a relationship arc,” co-director Jonathan Meier explained. “There are plays about falling in love, getting married, discussing children, raising children, infidelity and divorce. It will be a really compelling night of streaming theatre.”
The plays were all filmed on the Mundelein High School stage, with students manning the cameras and storyboarding the shots. “Planning and executing the filming of the plays has given our tech theatre students a valuable experience this year,” said Sara Gunther, Mundelein Theatre staff member in charge of lighting and filming. “It is something that they were able to add to their skillsets.”
The student Production Managers are Sarah Larson, Meghan Matthys, Chris Moyer, Zoe Trahan and Marley Wilkins. The Assistant Director is Megan Saunders. The actors all wear transparent masks during the filming of the plays. The plays and the actors are Obsessive Impulsive (Tori Collins & Leandro Ocampo, The Singing Telegram (Grace Sciortino & Addison Salski), What?!? (Maximus Watson & Will Gonzalez), The Answer (Taylor Gates & Max Dunlap), Uh-Oh (Mary McMurray & Kailib Keblys), Lunch and Dinner (Joslyn Ganges & Matthew Callas), Chicken (Chris Nacion & Bella Buono), Forgot (Dean Hahn & Katie Myrant), Where Was I? (Julia Myrant & Hailey Lindenbaum) and Destiny (Eli Walter & Haydn Nuttall).
Virtual Blood Drive
February 14 through March 13. All presenting donors who mention Mundelein High School will receive a coupon for a large one topping pizza from Papa John’s.
