Recognition
Hussain Razvi, a sophomore in Mundelein High School’s Project Lead the Way (PLTW)-Honors Principles of Engineering course, was recognized in Samsung’s recent “Solve for Tomorrow” competition. Thanks to Razvi, Mundelein High School was one of only two high schools from IllinoisHussain Razvi
to be recognized in this nationwide contest designed to boost interest and proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The challenge was for public school teachers and students in grades 6-12 to show how STEM can be applied to help improve their communities.
Hussain proposed an alternative methodology for checking symptoms of COVID-19. Using research from SARS-2, he identified measurements that are strong indicators of respiratory-related diseases like COVID-19. The proposal used Arduino-based sensors, making it extremely cost effective. His plan also included monitoring capability using data shared across multiple institutions to provide feedback and guidance on current and future public health mitigations.
“After competing in the Mundelein Mayor’s Challenge last year, I was inspired to find other events,” Hussain explained.
As an honorable mention entry, he received a Samsung Note20 5G cellphone and a compatible UV sanitizing charger with a total retail value of over $1000.
“Hussain is also an active member of our Robotics Club and has done a lot during this season despite the pandemic,” said Manny Aldana, Project Lead the Way instructor. “While his dad thanked me for mentoring Hussain, I would like to thank everyone for supporting programs like PLTW and robotics which create inspiration and opportunities for our students to thrive in the STEM field,” Aldana concluded.
“Congratulations to Hussain Razvi and his Project Lead the Way teacher, Manny Aldana – proving once again, ‘It’s a Great Day to be a Mustang!’, said Larry Calhoun, fine and applied arts department chair at MHS.
MHS Science Olympian selected for state advisory committee Mundelein High School sophomore, Ciara West, has been selected for the Illinois Science Olympiad Youth Advisory Committee. The committee will help bring youth voice to state efforts, createCiara West
recommendations for teams throughout the state and develop leadership and professional skills.“Ciara was selected because she demonstrates leadership experience and skills on their Science Olympiad team, school and community,” said Joe Maxwell, one of the MHS Science Olympiad coaches.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to be on the committee to help improve Illinois Science Olympiad,” West said “Our program at MHS has given me the opportunity to explore science with my friends and, as a member of the board, I’m hoping to promote and expand STEM activities in Illinois schools so that more students will have the ability to do the same.”
“Obviously we are very proud that Ciara has stepped up into the leadership position,” Maxwell said. “Mundelein High School will be well represented at the Illinois Science Olympiad Youth Advisory Committee,” he said.
Mark Michalski and Jackie Hogan also advise the group.

Activities
Romance & Relationships Take Center Stage at Mundelein TheatreFor their winter play offering, Mundelein Theatre is presenting LOVE/SICK, by John Cariani. The play is described as a collection of ten slightly twisted and completely hilarious short plays, which explores the pain and the joy that comes with being in love. The play is being streamed online on February 26, 27 and 28. The shows on the 26th and 27th are scheduled content, which means they play once at 7 pm on those dates. The show on the 28th is video on demand, which means that those purchasing tickets can watch the show starting at 2 pm, and can view the show as often as they want for a 48 hour time period. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.showtix4u.com/events/18905 Some of the plays contain mature content.
“This was the perfect piece for creating theatre during a pandemic,” said Jeff Harding, co-director of the show. “Each play features two actors, so we were able to give plenty of students the opportunity to perform, while keeping the rehearsal process safe.” “This collection of stories follows a relationship arc,” co-director Jonathan Meier explained. “There are plays about falling in love, getting married, discussing children, raising children, infidelity and divorce. It will be a really compelling night of streaming theatre.”
The plays were all filmed on the Mundelein High School stage, with students manning the cameras and storyboarding the shots. “Planning and executing the filming of the plays has given our tech theatre students a valuable experience this year,” said Sara Gunther, Mundelein Theatre staff member in charge of lighting and filming. “It is something that they were able to add to their skillsets.”
The student Production Managers are Sarah Larson, Meghan Matthys, Chris Moyer, Zoe Trahan and Marley Wilkins. The Assistant Director is Megan Saunders. The actors all wear transparent masks during the filming of the plays. The plays and the actors are Obsessive Impulsive (Tori Collins & Leandro Ocampo, The Singing Telegram (Grace Sciortino & Addison Salski), What?!? (Maximus Watson & Will Gonzalez), The Answer (Taylor Gates & Max Dunlap), Uh-Oh (Mary McMurray & Kailib Keblys), Lunch and Dinner (Joslyn Ganges & Matthew Callas), Chicken (Chris Nacion & Bella Buono), Forgot (Dean Hahn & Katie Myrant), Where Was I?
