Boys Water Polo

Coaches Corner: Russ Gates

Congrats to both JV & Varsity Boys' Water Polo on their Wins over Warren! Great way to celebrate Senior Night!

The Mustang Boys’ Water Polo team went 3-1 at the Best of the West Tournament in Naperville last weekend with their only loss to the tournament champions.  This earned them 4th place in the 9 team tournament and brought their overall record to 12-9.  The Mustangs look forward to this weekend where they host a 4 team tournament.

Boys Volleyball

Coaches Corner: Dressen & Willis

Our Varsity volleyball team went 4 - 1 at the Lake County Invite this past weekend losing to Grant, but defeating Antioch, Grayslake North, Waukegan, and Deerfield to win the Silver Division. This brings the Varsity record to 11-5 so far this season. At the Barrington Tournament, the JV team beat Hinsdale South, Barrington, and Lake Zurich, but lost their final game against Lake Park in 3 close sets. The Frosh/Soph team went 5-0 winning the Libertyville Invite bringing their record to 11-0. Monday night Varsity, JV & the Frosh/Soph team beat Antioch. There has been a lot of exciting volleyball happening this past week!  All levels are Away at Grayslake North on Monday, but come back home to play Lake Zurich in the Mundelein Gym on Wednesday. And then all levels face Stevenson on Thursday.

Girls Basketball

Congratulations to the Mustangs Girls Varsity Basketball team on being recognized for their All-State Academic Team Achievement award.

The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association recently completed our third year of recognizing our All-State Academic Team Achievement Awards for varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball teams from across the state.

The 2021-2022 season saw a record number of total submissions from our member schools with outstanding accomplishments from all student-athletes during the basketball season.  In order to qualify, the full roster of a varsity team must successfully maintain a cumulative, unweighted GPA above a 3.0 average through the first semester of the current basketball season.

All schools are eligible to participate and the IBCA is very proud to support our students in their primary high school endeavor, while also recognizing the rigors of being a student-athlete in the sport of basketball.

Congratulations to all teams for their participation and success!

Girls Soccer

Coaches Corner: Seong Ha

The girls lost the tournament opener in a heartbreaker last Thursday versus the Kaneland Knights, 0-1, in overtime.  On Friday, the girls bounced back with a 5-0 victory over the Larkin (Elgin) Royals.  Goalkeepers Jamie Ketchum and Jill Kennicott shared the shutout while goals were led by Grace Cordova’s first ever varsity goal and both Ashley Strachn & Rachel Sciortino each scoring two goals!  Delaney Kruse’s two assists along with Bella Cordova, Ailani Zires, and Nayeli Abrego paced the helpers throughout the tournament match. Finally, on Saturday, the team beat the Hampshire Whip-Purs, 2-0, with Nayeli Abrego earning a goal and an assist in the contest.  Ashley Strachn scored in the 18th minute, Bella Cordova fed Abrego on a 40-yard free kick bomb for an assist, and goalkeeper Abby Rounds earned a win and shutout by making 7 saves. The defense of Sam Nevergall, Lauren Coup, Bella Cordova, Natalie Wall, Ailani Zires, and Hanna Tenson provided 160 minutes of shutout soccer over the weekend. Way to go Mustangs!

JV Soccer

Coaches Corner: Mike Dayton

The JV Girls Soccer Team recently traveled to Belvidere IL where they enjoyed great success in the tournament they played in.  After the games, the team stopped in Marengo, IL at Joe’s place for a bite to eat and more fun getting to know each other.

Softball

Coaches corner: McCreery & Wilhelm

Varsity softball finished the week with a doubleheader split versus Glenbrook North and moved to 3-3 (2-1 NSC).  A few more of our girls joined the Home Run Club (notice the Mundy Chain which signifies either a home run or striking out the side).

Boys Tennis

Coaches corner: Cohen & Berg

Boys Tennis defeated Zion-Benton on Tuesday to raise their record to 4 + 3.  The Varsity also competed in the tough Maine South Invite on Saturday. #1 Singles player Kevin Edquiban raised his record to 8 + 1 on the season.  His only loss came Saturday to the Jacobs player that finished in fifth place at state in 2021.  Kevin raised his career record to 51 + 15 at #1 Singles for the Mustangs.  Kevin is making a case for consideration as the best male tennis player in Mundelein High School History.

JV Boys Tennis has had a few good matches against Libertyville, Lake Zurich and a tournament. This week we have matches Tuesday – Saturday! Hopefully we are getting some nice weather to play tennis in! Go Mustangs!

Girls Track

Coaches corner: Nate Sweet

It has been a rough start to the outdoor half of the Girls Track & Field season, due to weather related cancellations, postponements, and cold temperatures.  However the girls have been handling these difficult conditions as well as possible.  At Warren in a double dual with Libertyville we had event winners Jordyn Miller (200m, 400m), Sharron Kagan (Discus)and the 4x400m Relay of Miller, Praise Oyebanji, Jenna Klein, and Jocelyn Gomez.  In a double dual with Zion Benton and Waukegan we had a team victory over Waukegan and individual event wins by Jordyn Miller (200m, 400m), Praise Oyebanji (800m), Abigail Shifley (100m hurdles), Sharron Kagan (Discus), Alicia Brak (High Jump), and the 4x800m relay of Amber Dean, Isablela DelaCruz, Viviana Gonzalez, and Jocelyn Gomez.  This past Saturday on a cold and windy day we had an invitational at Vernon hills.  Award winners were Jordyn Miller (800m), Kathleen Asmussen (Shot and Discus), the JV Distance Medley Relay of Amber Dean, Shannon Ouimet, Isabella DelaCruz, and Alea Sweet, and Sharron Kagan (Shot and Discus) who in the discus threw a NEW MEET RECORD of 36.39m.

Boys Track

Coaches corner: Kurt Rutz

The Boys' Track team were on the road last week, as they traveled to Lane Tech on Thursday, and then Springfield Friday and Saturday. At Lane Tech the team battled winds of up to 40 MPH, which resulted in the cancellation of several events for safety.  The high winds didn't slow Marcel Siepko though, who led the team, winning the 100m and took 2nd in the 200.  Other scorers included Kevin Moyer, who was 6th in the 400m, Brandon Hansen, who took 4th in the Shot Put, and 3rd in the Discus, Ian Xu, who was 3rd in the Triple Jump. On Saturday, our young distance runners took center stage.  The F/S 4 x 800 Relay took 2nd in a fine time of 8:59.  That effort by the all-freshman foursome of Javier Mata, Marco De La Cruz, Logan Ramirez, and Alberto Diaz currently stands as the #2 time in the nation by an all-freshman team.  The top Varsity performance of the day went to Danny Shannon, who powered through strong winds to take 6th in the 300 hurdles, scoring the only varsity points on the day. This week we are hosting our annual Middle School track meet, the Kevin Zawila Invitational on Saturday. With 15 schools participating it will be an event to remember for these young athletes. The meet starts at 9AM in our stadium, and the weather looks to be great. Our senior night home meet this week was canceled but will be rescheduled in May.  As always, It's A Great Day To Be A Mustang!

Coaches Recognition

Congratulations to our very own Colin Franklinfor competing in the Boston Marathon (his 3rd time) on April 18th. The weather was beautiful-crisp and sunny! Colin ran a 2:44:02 which was a personal record for him.
