Northwestern Medicine Discovery Program accepting applications

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for students to the Northwestern Medicine Discovery Program at Lake Forest Hospital! The Discovery Program is a local effort to expose students to careers in healthcare. Throughout the Discovery Program, high school sophomores and juniors are exposed to a broad range of activities designed to encourage their interest in healthcare careers. Topics vary by month and program activities may include tours, guest speakers, group discussion, and hands-on projects. In addition, the program fosters character and professional development, cultivates life skills, provides community service and leadership experience, and offers mentorship and networking opportunities.

Click HERE to apply!  The application is open until October 1 and is completed entirely online.  Please contact Seth Kidder at 847-535-7073 or at Seth.Kidder@nm.org.

LCHD Offers COVID19 Vaccinations

Lake County Health Department in partnership with District 120 and the Community Health Center will be offering a vaccination event on Wednesday, September 8 from 10:00am -6PM.

Note the extended afternoon/evening time to accommodate students.  Guardians need to be present for anyone under 18 years old.

Shield Testing Offered by D120
As part of our COVID-19 mitigation strategy, Mundelein High School will offer free COVID testing for our students sometime after Labor Day weekend.

All students are eligible, regardless of their vaccination status.

This is a voluntary program, requiring a parent’s consent. If you are willing to provide consent for your child to be tested, please complete this questionnaire.  Your child cannot participate unless this form is completed.

We are arranging for non-invasive tests at least once per week at Mundelein High School. Each test will take only a few minutes to administer during the school day. Students will simply provide a saliva (spit) sample. Students should stay hydrated up until an hour before testing. One hour prior to testing, they must not eat, drink, brush their teeth or chew gum.

Results will be available in 24 hours and released to the Illinois Department of Public Health and to Mundelein High School. All information is protected under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).

More details will be available soon on the District 120 website and in emails from the Superintendent’s office.

For any questions about this program please contact MHS Principal Anthony Kroll at info@d120.org .

Restart, Restore, Reconnect
As a part of our Restart, Restore, Reconnect motto this year, MHS has taken steps to institute mental health and social emotional learning during the entire school year.  It is very important for all students to learn about wellness and humanity.  This past Tuesday, August 17, your student viewed a presentation about increasing awareness and access to social emotional supports at MHS. Student, family, and staff wellness is of high priority this year, so this is the first of eight wellness-related presentations.

The Top 3 Takeaways and Tips for this month’s presentation include:

  • MHS has a number of counselors, social workers, psychologists, and deans who are dedicated to support student wellness. What does your family do to practice wellness?
  • Every student has a support team. Does your student know who is part of their support team?
  • Check in with yourself often so you know what level of support you need from yourself/others. Who is your student’s go-to person for support?

Restart, Restore, Reconnect - Welcome Back to School 2021-2022

Welcome Back To School!  It has been wonderful to open school this week, bringing our students back into the building!  The energy, excitement and joy of being in the presence of each other is on the faces of students and staff alike.  It has been a great opening of the school year.

As educators, we are intentional about our work with students.  Teaching a new skill, bridging it to known skills while actively working in a social emotional concept like compassion into the lesson.  The school year is a time to be intentional about where the direction of the year will go.  This is seen in our theme:

Restart, Restore, Reconnect

Restart - a new beginning to a familiar process - We will restart the learning.

Restore - replace something that was lost - We will restore our school identity.

Reconnect - Re-establish relationships / relationships are the foundation - We will reconnect with each other.

We have great things to look forward to this year.  We welcome in-person learning and a restoration of our school functions such as community building activities in class, executive functioning supports, social emotional themes and lessons throughout the year while maintaining our focus on racial equity in the education we provide.

Each week, I will create this blog so that you, our families and community, are on top of all the things happening at MHS.  I will spotlight recognitions, new stories, events, activities, athletics and news from the College and Career Resource Center.  The blog will be sent on Friday each week and I look forward to sharing the great news from MHS every week.

For this week, please enjoy the sights and sounds of the start of the school year!
