High School and elementary students to share reading
On Tuesday, Nov. 26, students in Ryan Buck’s Creative Writing course will join Juliann Lucansky’s first grade class at Washington Elementary School in Mundelein from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. to read children’s books. It is part of the fiction unit that Buck teaches.

“Students don’t have much experience with writing fiction, so I have them start small,” Buck explained.  “This gives them an authentic audience that they need to consider in the creation of their piece and holds them accountable to actually doing it.”

Buck is looking forward to an interactive activity where the high school students read their books and the first graders read something of theirs like something they wrote, a favorite book, etc. Doing this on the day before Thanksgiving Break, Buck also hopes to weave some gratitude into the experience as well.

MHS Robotics competed this Saturday, November 16, at a VEX Robotics Competition hosted in Chicago. One of MHS Robotics teams was undefeated (8-0-1) and eventually became tournament champions beating other teams from 9 different high schools. This qualifies the team to the state-wide VEX Robotics Competition to be held in March. Another team from MHS Robotics became tournament finalist with an (8-1-0) record.

This is the third tournament that MHS Robotics competed in after hosting our own last month, and they have been progressing every time. The dedication our students have to this team is second to none and this well-deserved victory is a testament to all the hard work they have put in.

Who Decides:  It is the superintendent’s decision to cancel school because of bad/dangerous weather. The superintendent, along with the leadership team, will make the best decision for students’ safety.

Timing:  The decision to close schools during extreme weather (usually snow, ice or extreme wind/cold) is made as early as possible, often very early in the morning. The decision is based on the best weather information available and how inclement weather will affect students, staff and parents during travel times.

Temperatures:  There is no official temperature that closes schools. The superintendent and leadership team consider several factors, including road conditions. Typically, a wind chill of negative 30 degrees will start the conversation about closing schools.

Several different scenarios are possible with bad weather:
Two-Hour Delayed Start:  If schools will open on a two-hour delayed start, students should arrive at school two hours later than their normal start times. This option might be used if weather or road conditions are severe overnight but are expected to improve in the morning. On a delayed start day, buses will run their routes two hours later than normal. Likewise, parents who drop their children off at school should do so two hours later than usual. After school activities will continue as scheduled.

School Closed:  If schools are closed for the day because of weather, students will remain home. Generally, this also means that all other school activities like after-school clubs, sports, practices, etc. are also canceled for that day. That lost day will need to be made up later to meet State of Illinois requirements for students.

eLearning Alternative:  After two days of school are canceled because of weather and are rescheduled for make up, additional weather days off may utilize eLearning alternatives recently endorsed by the state. Students will have a number of options for completing school work at home and receiving credit for that work. Days off that use the eLearning alternative do NOT have to be made up later. Students will have four days from the day off to turn in the work completed on that day. More details on this alternative are available on the school’s website at https://www.d120.org/assets/1/6/elearning_proposal.pdf

FINAL DECISION:  The final decision is always up to the parent/guardian. If you decide to keep your child/children home because of weather, please contact your child’s main office staff to let them know of your decision.

MHS Senior Ander Nutall

MHS senior earns first place at Student Silent Film Festival
Mundelein High School senior, Ander Nutall, earned first place at the annual Student Silent Film Festival held at the historic Sanfilippo Estate in Barrington this past weekend. Students from all of Chicagoland participated in the event.

Nuttall earned his award at the event with his short story titled “Skateboard Jungle.” The theme for this year’s video was “Unexpected Hero.”

To add to presentations, the Top Three entries also had an additional new soundtrack written and performed live by professional organist, Jelani Eddington.

“It is really exciting to have won and I want to thank all the people who helped me create this video,” Nuttall said. “It was really fun to film. One of the things that made it so fun is that we got to skateboard in the halls of MHS which is something you don’t normally get to do.”

“It has been fun to see Ander’s work over the years get better and better with each project,” said Kent Meister, Nuttall’s Film as Literature instructor. Whether it is a short film, news story or music video he thinks it all through ahead of time and that hard work upfront has resulted in some great stories.”

Organist Jelani Eddington has performed in most major concert venues throughout the United States and has toured extensively abroad. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including his selection as the 2001 Theatre Organist of the Year.

Chicago Bear assists with collections for new Welcome Center
Kerrith Whyte of the Chicago Bears was at Mundelein High School Tuesday, Nov. 12 to assist with collecting and sorting items for the new Welcome Center that recently opened at the District 120 Office Building. Whyte, along with members of the Helping Heroes of America Club at MHS, collected the items at the high school and moved them to the Welcome Center. There, they sorted the items and stocked the shelves with the newest donations. This was all part of the MHS Booster Club’s hat and gloves drive which was recently begun.

While at MHS, Whyte also toured the facilities at the high school and spent time with some of the MHS athletic teams.

The Welcome Center provides free clothing, food and other items to those who need them. It is open from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. every Wednesday and Friday. Mundelein Theatre to present The Elephant Man
“Sometimes I think my head is so big because it is so full of dreams.” This is the seminal quote from the play The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance. The Tony Award winning play will be presented at Mundelein High School on November 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m., and November 22 at 3:45p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The matinee performance on Friday is only $1 for MHS students. Since this production will be staged on a 200-seat onstage thrust configuration, online tickets are recommended, and can be purchased at www.mundeleintheatre.org.  Tickets can also be purchased at the door, 30 minutes prior to each performance. This play is not recommended for anyone under 13 years of age.

MHS Junior Matthew Callas as Merrick
The Elephant Man is based on the story of Joseph Merrick (referred to in the play as John Merrick), a young man who lived in the Victorian era and is known for the extreme deformity of his body. Seen as a freak by society, his life is changed when physician Frederick Treves agrees to care for him. “This is not a play that is produced very often on high school stages,” said Jonathan Meier, the play’s director.” We are eager to bring this beautiful and difficult piece to MHS.” Meier continued, “The fact that the audience will be sitting on the stage with the performers will certainly add to the excitement and anticipation.”

Playing the role of John Merrick is MHS junior Matthew Callas. “The script is very specific that the actor playing this role should not wear any prosthetic makeup, and that the actor should portray Merrick’s deformity through physicality, letting the audience imagine his appearance,” said Callas. ““The physical demands of having to contort my body to play the role has been a challenge, but even more of a challenge is the fact that Merrick had a severely deformed face which prevented him from showing much emotion. We have been working hard in rehearsal to find the right range of emotion while staying true to his physical condition.” Senior Colby Willis portrays Dr. Frederick Treves. “My character takes quite an emotional journey during the course of the play,” said Willis. “His friendship and experience with Merrick causes him to examine his own life and moral center.”

Seniors in the company are Ellie Mellen (Mrs. Kendall), Marta Sikora (Mrs. Gomm), Steven Weiss (Ross), Isabella Marotti (Pinhead Manager), Ahmad Koya (Belgian Police), Josh Fergen (Conductor), Allan Rodriguez (London Police), Katie Staroszczyk (Miss Sandwich), Miriam Mitry (Porter), and Elias Photopoulos (Bishop How). Rounding out the cast are Zoe Trahan (Pinhead), Mira Guiritan (Pinhead), Lucas Fuller (Pinhead), Mary McMurray (Snork), Brenda Olayo (Dutchess), Rosy Castro (Duchess), Alexis Lee (Princess Alexandria) and Roy Dumblauskas (Sir John). Joslyn Gange is the stage manager and Amari Liebe is the assistant director.

5Essentials Parent Survey is open!
Mundelein school districts 75 and 120 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the eighth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. All district schools are required to participate in a school learning conditions survey each year. It was deemed an important component to balanced accountability under the state’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan by stakeholders.

The parent surveys are now available to the public while the student and teacher surveys will be available beginning Dec. 10 through Feb. 14.

“We encourage parents in both our districts to complete the survey so that your voices are heard,” said Kevin Myers, districts 75 and 120 superintendent. “We will take all of your input seriously and use it to continually review and update our current educational practices.”

We guarantee that survey responses will never be connected to you or your child.  No individual will be identified in the school reports; school principals or teachers will never see any individual responses. School reports will only present summary information of how parents feel as a whole, such as the percent of parents agreeing that they feel comfortable raising concerns to their child’s teacher.

The survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring the five “essentials” critical for school success. Those include:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in April 2020. Survey results will also be reported publicly on the 5Essentials reporting site in Spring 2020 and on the State School Report Card website in the Fall of 2020.

“Thank you in advance for taking part in this important survey,” Myers said. “We really appreciate your time and input.”

Allen Lynch

Rank and branch: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company D, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). place and date: Near My An (2), Binh Dinh province, Republic of Vietnam, 15 December 1967. Entered service at: Chicago, Ill. Born: 28 October 1945, Chicago, Ill.

Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Lynch (then Sp4c.) distinguished himself while serving as a radio telephone operator with Company D. While serving in the forward element on an operation near the village of My An, his unit became heavily engaged with a numerically superior enemy force. Quickly and accurately assessing the situation, Sgt. Lynch provided his commander with information which subsequently proved essential to the unit's successful actions. Observing 3 wounded comrades Lying exposed to enemy fire, Sgt. Lynch dashed across 50 meters of open ground through a withering hail of enemy fire to administer aid. Reconnoitering a nearby trench for a covered position to protect the wounded from intense hostile fire, he killed 2 enemy soldiers at point blank range. With the trench cleared, he unhesitatingly returned to the fire-swept area 3 times to carry the wounded men to safety. When his company was forced to withdraw by the superior firepower of the enemy, Sgt. Lynch remained to aid his comrades at the risk of his life rather than abandon them. Alone, he defended his isolated position for 2 hours against the advancing enemy. Using only his rifle and a grenade, he stopped them just short of his trench, killing 5. Again, disregarding his safety in the face of withering hostile fire, he crossed 70 meters of exposed terrain 5 times to carry his wounded comrades to a more secure area. Once he had assured their comfort and safety, Sgt. Lynch located the counterattacking friendly company to assist in directing the attack and evacuating the 3 casualties. His gallantry at the risk of his life is in the highest traditions of the military service, Sgt. Lynch has reflected great credit on himself, the 12th Cavalry, and the U.S. Army.[1]  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_James_Lynch

Mundelein’s Conor Enright commits to Drake By Joe Henricksen  Nov 1, 2019, 8:48am CDT
Conor Enright
While the early basketball signing period is less than two weeks away for prospects in the Class of 2020, Mundelein’s Conor Enright will have to patiently wait another 52 or so weeks. But at least the 6-1 junior guard knows where he will be signing a year from now. Enright made an early commitment early Friday morning, choosing Drake over Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois. “After having been there on three different occasions and getting to know the coaching staff and the program, I could never find anything that I didn’t like,” Enright said. “From the coaches to the culture of the program, it was a place I felt like I could call home.” Although his overall recruitment was somewhat at its beginning stages, Enright said he felt no need to wait. Drake made Enright a priority very early and stuck with him throughout the past year. “I just loved the opportunity I will have there and everything about it, so I took that opportunity and ran with it,” Enright said. Last season as a sophomore, Enright helped fuel the re-emergence of Mundelein basketball. He led the Mustangs to 20 wins while averaging 15.5 points and 5.1 assists. He’s among the City/Suburban Hoops Report’s top 20 prospects in the junior class. Drake, meanwhile, continues making a strong push into Illinois with its recruiting and gained a whole lot of traction recruiting the state. Coach Darian Devries, who begins his second year at Drake, signed a pair of Illinois products out of the Class of 2019 — Bolingbrook’s Joseph Yesufu and Lemont’s Nate Ferguson. Those two are now promising freshmen for the Bulldogs. Loyola’s Jordan Kwiecinski, one of the City/Suburban Hoops Report’s top 15 prospects in the Class of 2020 in Illinois, will sign with Drake in November. Now Enright will add to the pipeline in the Class of 2021. “That does appeal to me,” says Enright of the Illinois contingent that will be at Drake. “I like how Illinois players play, and I look forward to playing with them.” The competitive and scrappy junior will lead a Mundelein team that hopes to challenge Stevenson in the North Suburban Conference and boasts top 25 ranking potential.
