Junior named semi-finalist in Ayn Rand writing contest
Lauren Loding was recently named a semi-finalist in a writing contest that she participated in last year as a sophomore in Elizabeth Willis’s Honors English 2 Class, winning $100. Winning essays had to demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Anthem, by Ayn Rand.
Essays were judged on whether students were able to argue for and justify their own views. Judges looked for writing that was clear, articulate and logically organized.

College Week Wrap Up
Last week saw students overflowing the CCRC on multiple occasions.  Seniors came in to receive essay assistance, all grade levels (even many sophomores!) came to learn about how to financially prepare for college costs, many classes attended panel presentations, and on our Free Application Day (unique to MHS) we had 151 applications completed and multiple students were admitted on the spot!  It was an amazing, exciting week!

Mustang News - October 20, 2017

This week, the MHS community celebrates the work of our Custodial and Buildings/Grounds staff.  These staff members work hard to keep the physical building and grounds of the high school looking as well kept and functional.  Two crews start early each morning until late in the evening ensuring classrooms are clean, athletic events are set up, repairs are completed in a timely fashion, and even remodeling.  The school community thanks the Custodial and Buildings/Grounds staff for their dedication!

After many decades, the outside pool building has been removed.  In the 1970's, the Mundelein Park District built the community pool and pool house.  The pool was closed in the late 1990's when Barefoot Bay was built at it's current site.  This week, MHS was able to remove the building and hopes to create an area for outdoor receptions.

Dr. Kroll gets a shot at tearing down the old pool building.

New Faces to take over the Mundelein Theatre stage
The future of Mundelein Theatre will be on display on the Mundelein High School stage at the end of October. Cinderstein, a comedy by Kamron Klitgaard, will be presented as the school’s New Faces Production. The cast is made up of 28 freshmen and sophomores, as well as juniors and seniors who have never appeared on the MHS main stage. The show will be performed on Friday, Oct. 27 at 3:45 and 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The matinee performance on Friday is only $1 for MHS students. Tickets can be purchased at the box office prior to each performance.

Cinderstein has been described as wacky, crazy, family fun. A local high school drama teacher has written his own version of Cinderella by combining the Princess’s tale with the story of Frankenstein, but the production is bombing. The Fairy Godmother wants to be called the Fairy Goshmother, three new stepsisters must be added to the cast, several actors quit, and the extras are fed up with being extras. When Dr. Frankenstein drops Cinderella’s brain and replaces it with a cat’s brain instead, this insane production changes beyond even the director’s recognition.

“I am very excited to be directing this year’s New Faces show,” said Jeff Harding. “This show provides a great opportunity for the younger performers in our school to get a positive experience in the theatre. Since this is a no-cut show, everyone who auditioned got a role on stage,” Harding said. “It is such a thrill on my part to get the chance to work with these young actors and help them to hone their skills as they prepare for future roles in our mainstage performances,” he explained.
Sophomore Katie Staroszczyk, an actor in the show, added, “This show is absolutely crazy and wonderful. It’s wacky which I think is good for beginning acting because it helps new actors get out of their comfort zone and come to terms with being completely ridiculous.”
