Congressman Brad Schneider / State Department Spring Internship Opportunities for HS Students
The following programs and internships are being offered by the State Department for High School students this upcoming year.

The Iraqi Young Leaders Program
IYLEP provides an opportunity for 12 United States high school students to join their Iraqi counterparts in a four-week program aiming to develop leadership and peacebuilding skills, foster relationships among youth from different backgrounds, and to promote mutual understanding between the people of Iraq and the U.S. This program takes place domestically in the U.S throughout different program locations in Vermont, a host community, and Washington, D.C. IYLEP is a fully funded program, covering travel, lodging, food, and all program activities. The U.S. students are full participants on the program and have the opportunity to share their own culture with the Iraqi participants while learning more about their counterparts’ cultures and way of life. Through teambuilding activities, dialogue, skills and theme-based workshops, living in dorms and with host families, and meeting teenagers from all over the U.S. and Iraq, participants will gain skills needed for their future education and professional goals. The application is currently open until January 15.  10 Americans will be selected for participation. One of the host communities also will be Chicago, IL this summer.
https://iylep.org/apply/

TechGirls
TechGirls is an international summer exchange program designed to empower and inspire young girls from Central Asia and the Middle East and North Africa to pursue careers in science and technology.
The centerpiece of the program is a weeklong technology camp that provides participants with an in-depth examination of technology-related topics, such as coding and cyber security and engages them in 45+ hours of hands-on instruction. The camp is complemented by additional activities such as site visits to technology companies, leadership clinics, community service opportunities, job shadowing, and cultural events. As part of program follow-on, the TechGirls implement at least one peer training program or service project within their schools and/or communities.
The application will not be open until mid-February (application link will be available at that time). Five Americans will be selected from across the US for both TechGirls NEA and TechGirls Central Asia.

Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Summer Institute (BFTF) to be held June 29-July 27, 2019 on the campus of Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN.  10 U.S. Fellows (aged 16 to 18) will join 45 international Fellows from Europe to take classes in International Diplomacy, Media and Journalism, Global Problems, Democracy, and Civic Education. Over the course of the institute, fellows will meet with US politicians, scholars, and journalists. Fellows will participate in debates, practical workshops, and seminars. They will also learn how to organize and participate in community service activities.
The Institute cultural program includes trips to Indianapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington. The program also includes an International Culture Night, talent show, 4th of July picnic, shows and concerts, movie nights and sporting events.  All Fellows will receive scholarships that will cover ALL EXPENSES related to BFTF.

Global Youth Leaders Camp (in connection with Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program)
The U.S. Department of State and Northern Illinois University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies are vitally interested in preparing young leaders worldwide to confront emerging and continuing global issues.  You are invited to apply for the Global Youth Leaders Camp, April 20-26, 2019, which will take place during Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program 2019 at NIU. This is a free opportunity for selected Illinois high school students, ages 15-17, to work alongside peers from ten Southeast Asian countries, to learn about diverse cultures, to build lasting friendships, practice leadership and civic action skills, and to join a three-day study tour to Washington, DC.

Boys Swimming
Mustangs took 3rd place at the Lake County Invite this past weekend.
Mundelein dropped a lot of times for this early in the year.
The Mustangs had a host of personal bests, which was led by a nice mixture of experience and new faces to varsity.

"Overall we're doing well. We have a bunch of new freshmen making an impact. We've been deep in recent years and are trying to move up," said Mustangs coach Rahul Sethna.
Freshman Omar Fathallah was second in the 100 freestyle (22.16) and swam anchor on the second place 400 free relay, where he joined fellow freshman Aaron Anastos, and upperclassmen Hunter Magee and Ryan Zentz to touch in 3:20.84.
Michael Romero is another talented freshman to look out for in the IM and 100 breastroke, where he finished sixth on Saturday (2:04.84).

Several teams will be competing over the holiday break and would love to have Mundelein fans.

In addition, ISAC offers free financial aid and college access events to assist students and families with the college-going process.

“We’re extremely proud of these students for being recognized as Illinois State Scholars and wish them well in their preparations for the next phase of their lives,” Kroll said.

Stand-Up students take part in youth summit
On Friday, November 30, STAND-UP students Aileen Cirilo, Maggie Lukas, Stephanie Gutierrez, and Megan Rastrelli participated in the Catalyst Youth Summit at the Lincolnshire Marriott organized by Adlai E. Stevenson High School students.

Nearly 100 high school students from around the state came together to discuss the negative impact of the commercialization of marijuana in the state of Illinois. Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim offered opening remarks, followed by Kelly Krenzer, who shared her story of the loss of her 20-year-old son to an intoxicated driver. Newly elected state Representative Daniel Didech worked with breakout groups on speaking with legislators. Special thanks to Representative Didech who helped STAND UP students fine-tune their elevator speech to promote teen drug prevention! Watch out world, our youth are ready to STAND-UP for the health and safety of Illinois youth!

STAND-UP is a community coalition that prevents teen drug use and promotes healthy choices so students achieve their best future. STAND-UP students meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 8:30 am - 9:15 am (on late start days). Members say they are a part of STAND-UP because they gain valuable leadership skills and want to make a difference in the larger Mundelein community. They also say it looks great on college, scholarship and job applications! Contact Dean Thatcher or Officer Balogh to learn more!

Boys Bowling
By Rusty Silber
Daily Herald Correspondent
Mundelein has a good core of bowlers for a first year team, led by Owen Jones and Nick Prochnow. They were really the ones that got the program going for this year and are trying to help the young inexperienced on the Mustangs' team of 11. "It's been a lot of fun so far," said Mundelein coach Chris Sweno, who moved back from Texas for a math teaching job at his alma mater (2007). "Some of the guys were throwing 80 to 100 (score) games a month ago are now throwing 130 to 150. It's a little frustrating at times, but they want to be there every game and I want them to be there every game. It's fun watching them grow and watching Nick and Owen lead the team. Seeing them work with the bowlers is a lot of fun." Jones led the way for the Mustangs on Wednesday with a 692 series with games of 259, 178 and 255.

The sophomore reached the sectional last season as an individual, but likes the fact there's a team with him now. "It's amazing, because I've always wanted Mundelein to have a bowling team," Jones said. "It's been a dream of mine since I saw my older brother (Ryan) bowl in the sectionals. I was hoping when I got to high school, I could do the same thing and there could be a team." Prochnow threw a 641 with games of 239, 221 and 181. The other Mustangs' bowlers were Miles Chubin (443), Jacob Buysse (400), Cody Gehrett (354) and Jacob Franzen (294). "We work so hard at this and hard work pays off so much," Prochnow said.
