Congratulations to the boys volleyball teams for their wins over Libertyville last week on Wednesday and against Grayslake North this past Monday. The Varsity team recently spent time with the Freshmen and Frosh/Soph teams in our Big Brother event where the Varsity led drills and demonstrations to help take all the players’ skills to the next level. Plus it was a great team bonding day! We have some NSC matches against Lake Zurich at home on Wednesday the 27th and Stevenson away on Thursday the 28th.  This Saturday, the Varsity heads to the Grayslake Central Invitational where they will face Huntley, Heritage Christian Academy, Proviso West, and others. JV heads to the Libertyville Tournament where they will also  face multiple schools. And then ALL levels play at home on Wednesday, May 4th against Warren. Games are at 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Come out and support your Mustangs!

Boys Track & Field

Coaches Corner: Kurt Rutz

It was a full week of track and field! The entire team – athletes, coaches and parents – were delighted to host the Keith Zawila Middle School Invitational Saturday at our facilities.  Named in memory of one of our dedicated track parents,  17 middle school teams participated after a three year hiatus.  Mentoring young runners, many of whom will be coming to MHS, our athletes really rose to the occasion in their volunteer efforts. Later the same day, at the Palatine Distance Night, two of our freshmen ran in the freshman 1600.  The field included some of the best freshmen in the state.  Javier Mata took 5th in a big PR of 4:39 while Marco De La Cruz took 12th, with a 3 second PR of his own running 4:46. The team then traveled to Stevenson on Monday to compete against the host school and Lake Zurich.  Marcel Siepko supplied a lot of the fireworks as he came from behind to win a close 100m race. He then anchored the 4 x 200 relay and a come from behind victory.  For good measure, Marcel volunteered to anchor the 4 x 400 relay, which also won in their fastest time of the year by 5 seconds.  The other Mustang win on the day came from freshman Marco De La Cruz in the 3200 meters.  Marco, competing at that distance for the first time ever, ran a fine time of 10:39 for the win. Later this week the team will run their JV crew at Antioch on Wednesday, and then join the girls team at the legendary Palatine Relays on Saturday. Our rescheduled senior night meet is also back on so come out and cheer on May 2nd at the MHS track!

Girls Track & Field

Coaches Corner: Nate Sweet

The Girls Track and Field team ended their dual meet season on Monday with a senior night meet against Lake Zurich and Stevenson.  Scores in the meet were: Sariah Hutchinson  (200m, High Jump), Jocelyn Gomez (400m), Praise Oyebanji (800m), Amber Dean (800m, 1600m), Alea Sweet (1600m), Abigail Shifley (100m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles), Jordyn Miller (300m Hurdles), Sharron Kagan (Shot, Discus), Kathleen Asmussen (Shot), Tori Weaver (Triple Jump), the 4x800m Relay beat Stevenson with Amber Dean, Vivi Gonzalez, Isabella DelaCruz, and Jocelyn Gomez, and finally the 4x400m relay ended the meet in superior fashion running a 4 second season best winning the event.  Those athletes were Praise, Vivi, Jocelyn and Jordyn.  It was a fitting end to Senior Night.

Last Saturday Jordyn Miller qualified and competed in the prestigious Palatine Distance Night in the 800m.  She competed against most of the top 800m runners across the state and finished 5th overall.  Her time of 2:18.50 was a season best and is setting her up nicely for a return to the EIU campus in May for the State Track and Field Finals.

Football

On Wednesday, Miguel Hernandez received the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award. This award recognizes excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. The NFF Metro Chapter Board of Directors has chosen Miguel and 10 others for this award. Congratulations Miguel! This well-deserved recognition includes a $1,000 college tuition scholarship, a professionally engraved trophy and an Awards presentation.

Coach DeFrancesco nominated Miguel for this prestigious award and had this to say about him, “Miguel is without question one of the hardest-working players in the entire program.  He is talented, caring, intuitive, dedicated and focused in his pursuits.  He consistently seeks constructive feedback so he can improve academic, athletic and life skills, which is a rare and impressive quality in a high school student.  Miguel is bi-lingual and he has helped many students who have a language barrier.”

Fundraiser

The weather is getting warmer, so that means it's time to get outside and get your yards ready for the summer. Our annual Mulch Fundraiser will be on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 from 8am-4pm. We will be selling bags out of Sawvell's lot, at the corner of 176 and 60 (Across the street from Crossroads and Walgreens). Bags are $4 each. Yes, we did have to raise the price a little bit. We are a little bit more expensive per bag than that big orange store down the street, but you're going to get a better product, and you're supporting a local Mundelein business and MHS. Now for the best part, we can deliver and spread it for you! Why would you want to get your car and hands dirty? Since we are using their lot, we should always have what you need available, so just drive by and pick it up. I have attached our flier with more info. If it's not too much trouble I would love for you to help us get the word out. Please share our flier on your neighborhood Facebook groups and any other social media platform. Please reach out if you have any questions. Thanks for your support.

'I feel like I just started yesterday':

Retiring Mundelein cop, canine lauded by mayor and board

A veteran Mundelein police officer and the four-legged half of the department's canine team are

retiring. Officer Kathleen "Katie" Smith is leaving the department May 5 after 25 years of service. Titan the German shepherd is heading to retirement after about seven years on the job. Smith and Titan were publicly lauded by Mayor Steve Lentz, village trustees, staffers and audience members during Monday night's board meeting. Lentz read proclamations honoring both of them and then gave framed copies of the documents to Smith and to Titan's longtime partner, Sgt. Steven Kroll. A Mundelein High School graduate 1989, Smith spent her entire law enforcement career in Mundelein. She joined the department as a patrol officer in 1997 and eventually became a field training officer, teaching most of the department's current officers how to do the job, Chief John Monahan said. "She has always been a role model for other officers," Monahan said before the meeting. Smith also worked in the investigations unit, as a crime prevention officer, with the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group and in other roles. Smith said she'll miss the job and the people she got to know doing it. "That's what's so great about this job," Smith said earlier in the day. "You don't know what you're going to run into or who you're going to meet." Titan is retiring because Kroll was promoted to sergeant April 3 and no longer will be Mundelein's canine officer. As often is the case for retired police dogs, Titan will remain in Kroll's care. Born in 2013, Titan was trained at TOPS Kennel in Grayslake and joined the department in 2015. Titan and Kroll assisted in drug cases, searches and in other law-enforcement roles. Over the course of his career, Titan helped police find 40 illegal guns, more than 460 grams of cocaine, more than 144 grams of methamphetamine, more than 87 grams of heroin and more than 10 kilograms of illegal cannabis products, among other contraband, Lentz said. But Titan also was part of the department's community relations mission. He and Kroll teamed for demonstrations to groups and businesses and at community events. Titan also was an ever-popular element of the department's citizen police academies. "Titan's presentations always were the favorite," Monahan said. Kroll formally was sworn in as a sergeant during Monday's meeting, too. Monahan hopes to have a new canine team in place this fall.
