Mustang News: Principal’s Blog

Mustang Families,

A sweet surprise for our student body this week came thanks to Mr. Sturgeon and the students in the Honors Jazz Ensemble. They setup shop in our C wing and performed for our students in the hallway as students were arriving to school. It was a fantastic way to end the week! See pictures below.

Also included in this week's newsletter is important information about student medical exclusions, information about Parent-Teacher Conferences and Veterans Day. Please take a moment to learn more below.

If you have any questions, please call the Main Office at 847-949-2200.

 Sincerely,

Alexandria Rios Taylor

Be a STEAMScholar!

The Illinois Tenth Congressional District STEAM Scholar Program is an exciting educational opportunity launched by Congressman Brad Schneider in 2018 for high school students in our community. The program aims to connect highly-motivated students interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with hands-on learning experiences throughout our district.

In the fall, students selected to participate in the STEAM Scholars program will have the opportunity to join Congressman Schneider on visits to four STEAM-related businesses and facilities during the 2022-2023 school year. On these visits, students will have the chance to participate in discussions with local employees, business owners, and educators, and learn more about the STEAM career opportunities in our backyard.

CCRC

Attention Seniors: Every student who graduates from a public high school in the state of Illinois must complete a FAFSA, Alternative Aid Application, or sign a waiver form. This requirement has been set by the state of Illinois. Please review THIS DOCUMENT for more information about this Public Act. Check out our FAFSA Mandate FAQ to find some answers to frequently asked questions.

On October 1 the FAFSA, IL Alternative Aid Application, and CSS Profile will all open for you to complete them to become eligible to receive financial aid for the 2023-24 school year as you head to college (this includes community college and technical schools, too!). We encourage all of our students to complete this process prior to December 1 for the best chances at receiving aid. Check out our FAFSA page and Paying For College page for helpful resources!

Every Monday from 11-1 in the CCRC (B105) our ISAC Corps Member, Emily, is available to help our students with Financial Aid and Scholarship questions. Email her at emily.coveny@illinois.gov to schedule an appointment or check out her page in our Virtual CCRC to learn more about what ISAC offers.

We are hosting a FAFSA Completion Workshop in person at MHS on Wednesday, October 12 from 5-8pm. Registration is limited, so please register as early as possible for a one hour time slot. Registration is open now in your student’s Naviance account (the student’s registration includes their parents/guardians/supporters).  During this workshop your family will receive free professional assistance completing your FAFSA!

Boys Cross Country -  Coaches Corner Kurt Rutz

The squad competed last Saturday at the Palatine Meet of Champions, one of the premier meets in the entire Midwest. Top teams from Illinois as well as Kentucky and Missouri attend and I've always said that if you can finish among the top 10 teams in a race, then you have been pretty successful in that division.

The freshmen just missed that goal, taking 13th out of 22 teams in the 2.5-mile race. Andrew Weaver led the team by taking 31st, out of 253 runners, with Nathan McCreight and Elijah Mendoza not far behind in 33rd and 36th. Elijah especially did a great job following the race plan, which resulted in his best race yet. Nikita Vovkiv took 91st and Nathaniel Mendez took 114th to close out the scoring.

Our sophomore squad kicked it up a notch by taking 8th out of 24 teams. Javier Mata led the way again by taking 2nd out of 283 runners in a PR of 15:42. Alberto Diaz also medaled in 8th place, running 16:19. Finn Keegan took 55th with a PR of 17:31, Logan Ramirez took 73rd in 17:45, and Damian Harrison came up big as 5th man, taking 131st in a PR of 18:47. In fact, 7 of the 13 runners we had who raced 3.0 miles PR'd today.

The Varsity squad took 28th out of 30 teams, with Tom Russ finishing first for the Mustangs, taking 143rd with a time of 16:48. Nick Schwenk PR'd for the 2nd race in a row, taking 173rd in a time of 17:29. Ethan Moy also PR'd for the 2nd straight week, taking 192nd in 18:29. Johnny Gray took 197th in 18:40, and Mariano Rodriguez took 205th in 20:30 to complete the scoring.

We also ran our last home meet on Wednesday against Lake Zurich. We will report on this, our senior night recognition, next week due to press time constraints! Next Meets: Saturday, October 1st: part of the team will travel to the state course at Detweiller Park while half competes at the Harland Invitations at Fox River Park, WI. We also take on Lake Forest on October 4th and then participate in the Lakes Invite on Friday, October 7th. Go Mustangs!
