The senior girls voted earlier to choose senior guys to vie for the title. Those who made the cut then auditioned for members of the Mundelein Parent Group who sponsor the event. After auditions, the number was cut to 13.

The evening competition will include a couple’s introductory dance with senior girls and individual talent performances. After that, the 13 will be cut to five who will then answer questions posed to them.  Mr. Mustang and two runners-up will be announced at the close of the event.  A panel of judges will do the balloting.

Civics Fair
Several local politicians were on hand as the Mundelein High School AP Comparative Government and Politics classes presented the first ever MHS Civics Fair Thursday, Feb. 22. Tom Kuhn is the teacher in charge of the Fair.

Students presented, Science Fair style, their proposals to reform our political system based on the founding principles of the nation. Winners at the Fair will advance to state competition to be held at Stevenson High School in April.

Topics presented by the students include term limits, campaign finance reform, instant runoff voting and the Electoral College.

Tenth Congressional candidates Jeremy Wynes and Sapan Shah planned to attend along with members of the office of Carol Sente and representatives from the Bruce Rauner campaign. Holly Kim will also be in attendance.

The Civics Fair was conducted as part of the Mikva Challenge Project Civics Works. The Mikva Challenge was founded on the premise that youth voice and participation matter and that civic and political life will be stronger when youth participate and help shape their own destinies. Mikva Challenge develops youth to be empowered, informed and active citizens who will promote a just and equitable society, according to their website.

Judges for the Fair are Michele Bonadies, Stacey Darcy and Bill Gorski of the MHS social studies department.

Some important features of the concert include: the first “musical theatre” performance by The Noteables, co-directed this semester by Bellas and Theatre Director Jonathan Meier. This is also the last performance of the show choir competitive shows that will occur during their season.

From the Nurse’s office to all parents of 11th graders,
We ask that you provide proof of your student receiving the second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine as soon as possible unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16 years of age is required.  We highly recommend that this vaccine requirement be completed and medical proof be turned into the nursing office before the last day of their 11th grade. Families that wait too long for their student to receive this requirement by the first day of the school year for 2018-2019 will put their student at risk being excluded from school until this requirement has been met. Supplies of this vaccine runs low or out closer to the deadline, so please take steps to have this done as soon as possible.  We thank you very much for your cooperation.

Wrestling
Congratulations to Logan Kvien (182) taking 4th place at IHSA State finals and Dane Durlacher (106) taking 3rd place. Congratulations also to Reese Durlacher for a great season. The tenth-ranked Durlacher (39-4) upended three-time state qualifier and two-time state medalist Carlos Champagne (Marian Catholic, 39-4). Durlacher's victory came after a first glance at the state brackets caused a bit of nerves, which led to hours looking at film. But all that preparation was well worth it.
"Yeah, I wasn't initially thrilled meeting Champagne, but the film told me he was more defensive of a wrestler than I thought," said Durlacher, "and that we had similar styles, so I needed to take advantage of that as best as I could." Durlacher opened in convincing style, with a 5-1 first-period advantage, before holding off a late charge to ensure a 10-5 triumph. Mundelein's Logan Kvien (182, 38-4) pinned his opponent, as did Carmel junior Riley Palm, who remains undefeated (39-0) at 138 pounds.

Business Incubator
Our Business Incubator student group, ConnectBZ, was invited to present at the Business Appreciation Breakfast this morning. The event was hosted by the Village of Mundelein, Mayor Steve Lentz, the Village Board Trustees, the Mundelein Business Alliance (MBA), and the Economic Development Commission (EDC). There was a great turnout and many local businesses were in attendance. The students showcased the features of the smartphone application they developed with seed money provided by the MBA. The group outlined the benefits of the application for MBA members - gives consumers more incentive to shop locally, MBA members will be able to better connect with local consumers, expand the membership of the MBA, create a greater business to consumer connection, help unite the business community, and create economic expansion in Mundelein. We applaud our student’s high level of professionalism on the delivery of their presentation.

Boys Swim/Dive
Mundelein got the NSC meet off to a great start when senior Kyle Ehemann won diving with a score of 336.85.  It was the first time the mustangs have produced conference champs in both girls and boys diving. Maggie Franz also won the event in November. It’s definitely a big shout to our diving coach, Bill Owens. He’s done a great job with them. They’ve been real steady and consistent,” said Coach Sethna. Junior Jake Garcia was one of many who dropped a ton of time Saturday, finishing with a sixth-place medal after dropping 12 seconds in the 500 free(5:12.15). Garcia also dropped two seconds on his first leg of the 400 free relay, where he paired with Logan Bradshaw, Jack Long and Patrick McInerney to touch in 3:34.90. Sethna said Matt Alore, Shane Stanley, Cale Sethna and Jeff Coudreau were fully tapered for the meet. (Daily Herald)

Wrestling
Mustangs will send 3 wrestlers to state. Dane Durlacher, Reese Durlacher and Logan Kvien.
Second-ranked Dane Durlacher (Mundelein, 41-0) started a run of ten state qualifiers in the first six weight classes by capturing the 106-pound title. A freshman sensation from Warren, Joel Vandervere (120, 39-2), added to the title run shortly thereafter.

"Now it gets not only fun, but it's the best time of the year," said Durlacher, who topped Warren's Sawyer Nash 5-0 and placed fourth at state a year ago. "And this time around, I'm going to Champaign with the idea of bringing back a state title." (Daily Herald). Best of luck Mustangs!
