Calvin Terrell Returns to MHS

Inspirational Speaker to meet with students and community
“Inspiring,” “Awesome,” “Best In-Service ever!” “Fantastic,” “Bring him back!,” “Give us more Calvin!”

These were some of the comments from MHS staff about the Aug. 10 Institute Day with speaker and facilitator Calvin Terrell. As part of the MHS core value of Equity, Terrell was here to engage the participants in many activities to open eyes and minds to new ways of thinking about what we do as human beings.

The speaker will meet with community members in the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium and with students during the day on both Sept. 5 and 6.  Staff members see this as an excellent way to continue with his message and for the high school family to work together toward all three core values of equity, growth and collaboration.

Terrell is founder and lead facilitator of Social Centric; an organization he designed to provide education and training for all ages to enhance human interactions and global progress. He is a former Assistant Director of the National Conference for Community Justice/ USA Arizona Region. He has taught for Upward Bound at Arizona State University and the Arizona National Guard’s Freedom Academy. For more than twenty years, Terrell has lectured, trained, and lead comprehensive workshops for valuing diversity, equity, and justice building in schools, corporations, and civic organizations for thousands of adults, children, and youth throughout the United States.  Visit Calvin's website http://calvinterrell.com/ for more information.

MHS student athletes met Terrell last year at the North Suburban Conference Athletic Leadership Conference in August 2017.  It was from these student recommendations that Terrell was invited to speak at Mundelein High School.

Book Talks at MHS
All students enrolled in English classes took part in “book talks” throughout the department on Friday, August 24. Students were asked to read at least one book of their choice over summer vacation. Students then shared that book with their peers during the book talks in small groups that mixed students of all ages and grade levels. The book talks offer students the opportunity to participate in an authentic activity to share their reading experiences and also provide students titles of books they may want to include on their next-read lists.

Musical works premiered at MHS chosen for publication
The works of composer Dana Wilson that were premiered in November 2017 by the Mundelein High School Honors Wind Ensemble, and commissioned by a consortium of 15 high school and college band programs led by the MHS Bands, have been selected for publication by Boosey and Hawkes. According to Wikipedia, Boosey and Hawkes “is a British music publisher purported to be the largest specialist classical music publisher in the world.”

Wilson premiered his works “Old Number One” and “The Banquet” at MHS and also worked with the students.

“As was the case at the inception of the commissioning project, it is our hope that these new works will become standard works in the wind band repertoire,” said Jerald Shelato who directs the MHS band program along with Andrew Sturgeon. “Their publication by Boosey and Hawkes is definitely a step in that direction,” Sturgeon said.

“Continued thanks to all who assisted in making our composer’s visit/premiere event last year such a success,” Shelato concluded.

Descriptions of the two works with their Mundelein “connections” appear below:

The Banquet (2017) Dana Wilson
Protest and even "terrorism" are not new to American life. On February 12, 1916, a large banquet was held at the University Club of Chicago to celebrate the installation of George William Mundelein as the third Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Illinois. The chef for the event, the anarchist Jean Crones, slipped arsenic into the soup in an attempt to poison Mundelein and over 100 other guests, including Illinois Governor Edward F. Dunne. Due to the late arrival of about fifty extra guests, however, it was decided that the soup should be watered down so that the unplanned-for arrivals could also be fed. Virtually all suffered considerable agony and were near death when a doctor, J.B. Murphy, though stricken himself, managed to hastily prepare a potion to help the victims. Due to the soup's dilution and antidote, the guests were able to recover--including Mundelein--and none died.

Newspapers referred to the mass-murder attempt as the "Mundelein poison soup plot." If the anarchist had succeeded, there would be no town of Mundelein, Illinois. By extension, there would be no Mundelein High School, and we wouldn't be sitting in this auditorium hearing this composition (since Mundelein's music faculty members Jerry Shelato and Andy Sturgeon organized the consortium that commissioned it).

The more important lesson, however, is that if the decision had not been made to share the soup with the unplanned-for arrivals, the dignitaries' selfishness would undoubtedly have led to their deaths. By sharing what was designated for them, they were saved.

Old Number One (2017) Dana Wilson
In 1924, the village of Mundelein, Illinois was so named out of gratitude for then-Chicago Archbishop George Mundelein's monumental financial investment in the community; this came in the form of his purchase of a business college near St. Mary's Lake and his transformation of that college into a seminary. In response to the community's gesture, Archbishop Mundelein (who was elevated to the position of Cardinal by Pope Pius XI around the same time) purchased a new 1925 Stoughton fire engine and donated it to the village fire department.

"Old Number One," as the truck has come to be affectionately known, saw 20 years of service with the Mundelein Fire Department before it was sold in 1945. The truck returned to Mundelein (from North Carolina) in 1994 and again became the property of the Village of Mundelein in time for the Village's 2009 Centennial Celebration. Since then, the village's Old Number One Fire Truck Preservation Committee has worked to preserve and showcase this piece of community history. With a roofless, open top and a maximum speed of approximately 25 miles per hour, Old Number One still makes its way around the community, appearing at local events to spread its inherent message of connectedness through common history.

Subtitled "A Wild Ride in an Antique Fire Engine," Dana Wilson's Old Number One is a musical depiction of what the truck's activity may have been like during its heyday serving the people of a still-young Mundelein, Illinois. Honking horns, pealing bells, and wailing sirens complement the work, reminding us all that Old Number One is still on the job and on its way!

Mundelein Theatre announces 2018-2019 season
Mundelein Theatre has announced their theatre offerings for the 2018-19 school year.
As usual, the season will start with the Student Directed One Act Plays. This year seven different MHS seniors will have the opportunity to direct their own short plays. It is always an interesting and compelling night of theatre, as these young theatre artists put their own stamp on a variety of different plays. The plays will be performed on September 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The New Faces production will be Diamondbacks and Diamonds in the Sky, by Jill Pertler. New Faces features freshmen and sophomores, as well as juniors and seniors who have not had the opportunity to be in a show at MHS. During the course of the play, the Carter family finds out what happens when you combine a wedding with the end of the world. What starts as a simple tale of a wedding grows into a story about the complexity of love, with a dash of humor thrown in on the side. Directed by Jeff Harding, the play runs October 24 at 3:45 and October 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m.
The fall production will be The Diviners, by Jim Leonard, Jr. This theatrical play is the story of a disturbed young man and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher in southern Indiana in the early 1930’s. Co-directed by Jonathan Meier and Dominick Basso, the play will be performed on November 15 at 7:30 p.m., November 16 at 3:45 and 7:30 p.m. and November 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Mundelein Theatre students will once again be competing in the Chicago Shakespeare Slam. The team will develop and perform two five-minute pieces to compete against schools from throughout the Chicago area. Last year the team was the Slam Champs, and they are anxious to defend their crown in their regional bout on December 3 at Juarez Community Academy in Chicago. There will be a public performance of their slam pieces on November 2 at 6 p.m. Mark Landuyt and Jonathan Meier coach the team.

The winter play is John Lennon and Me, by Cherie Bennett. A sweet and funny story about life, death, power and first boyfriends, the play follows Hollywood-wannabe Star, the ultimate Beatles fan, who has her path stymied by cystic fibrosis. This is a powerful tale about living life to the fullest. Directed by Jonathan Meier, the play will be performed on January 31at 3:45 and 7:30 p.m., and February 1 and 2 and 7:30 p.m.

Mundelein Theatre will once again be competing in the IHSA Group Interpretation competition. Last year the team placed second in their sectional, advancing to the state finals for the second straight year. This year they will be performing I Kill Giants, by Joe Kelly. Mark Landuyt will be adapting this graphic novel (which was also made into a major motion picture) and directing this story of a young girl battling monsters both real and imagined, kicking butt, taking names as she faces her greatest fear in this bittersweet, coming-of-age story.

There will be public performances on March 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. The team will compete in their sectional competition of March 16.

Closing out the season will be the spring musical, Sister Act, by Bill and Cherie Steinkellner. Based on the feel-good hit film, this musical comedy is about a woman hiding in a convent who helps her fellow sisters  find their voices as she discovers her own.  This uplifting show was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Directed by Jonathan Meier, it will run April 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. and April 27 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
All performances will take place in the Mundelein High School Auditorium. Click HERE for further information.
