This last week has been a whirlwind.

We competed in the Vernon Hills S”No”w Tap tournament this last weekend. JV slayed the competition taking 2nd place with individual winners Anna Kuznetsova (3rd place) and Paige Winters (4th place). Varsity earned 6th place out of 18 teams.

On Monday, we competed against Warren for first place. At the end of 3 games, we lost two points but gained 7, leaving MHS as #1 in the conference. Our JV team is a force to be reckoned with. Their scores were comparable to Varsity scores only a few years ago and are tearing a part of the competition. Shout out to the entire MHS Girls Bowling Team for remaining cool and slaying the competition.

Boys Swim/Dive Coaches Corner

This weekend the divers placed 2nd as a team in the GBN Sprint Classic. Johnny Anno broke 400 for the first time this season and placed 2nd individually. Joey Kafka placed 10th overall.

Girls Bowling Coaches Corner

It was a huge week for Girls Bowling.  On Saturday, two JV teams represented Mundelein earning 2nd and 7th place respectively out of 18 teams. Eliana Seleps took 2nd place in Top Series.  High game medalists were: Paige Winters (2nd), Anna Kuznetsova (3rd), Eliana Seleps(6th), and Rebecca Gokhman (10th).

On Monday, we competed against LHS for what we knew would be a tough match.  Varsity and JV bowled amazing scoring better than they have all season.  Taking the competition by over 250 pins, Mundelein won with a total pin count of 2722. Shout out to Brianna Merner for a 700+ series (bowling over 200 each game with a high game of 258). Other shout outs for individual highest games of the season are:  Samantha Sciortino (223), Eliana Seleps (206), Rhiannon Ellis (177), and Mia Manliguis (139).      We are now 4-0 in Conference.

Two of our bowlers, Mia and Talia, earned turkeys tonight! Go Mustangs! Principal Alexandria Rios Taylor was there to witness!

Boys Basketball Coaches Corner

The Mundelein Athletic Department and The Boys Basketball Program would like to take this time to honor a North Suburban Conference coach of Warren's Sophomore Basketball, coach Don Kloth on achieving several remarkable milestones. Coach Kloth is one of the greatest coaches in Lake County History.  He is coaching his 50th year of basketball.  Over Four Decades of those seasons were at Zion-Benton High School.  During those 50 years of excellence, Coach Kloth has won over 1,000 games. His 25 year run as the Varsity Coach at Zion-Benton included 528 wins, 14 Regional Championships, 4 Sectional Titles, and a 2nd place in state finish during 2007-08. Coach Kloth achieved this success with hard work and incredible dedication.  His success is only exceeded by his humility.  His intensity as a coach is exceeded by his kindness.  His brilliance in basketball is exceeded by his work ethic.  His amazing drive to win is exceeded by his caring for the players he coached.

We are proud to honor Coach Don Kloth for his longevity, his success, and his character.

Wrestling Coaches Corner

The Mundelein Mustangs had a busy week hosting Stevenson Thursday and heading to Waukegan Friday night.  The Varsity had a few last minute hiccups with the starting line-up against Stevenson and had to make a few adjustments.  As Coach Stocker was filling in some holes in the starting line-up, Sophomore James Krusinski took one for the team and filled in at 126 helping the Mustangs fill the line-up.  The Mustangs took the lead early with a HWT pin from Abisi Hernandez, a win from 113 Pablo Baceera, and a pin at 120 with Mundelein's Bryce Durlacher.  James Krusinski saved a team point by not getting pinned by Stevensons Kogan. Followed by a close match from Freshman Ethan Banda.  The Mustangs lost by pin to returning State Place Frezza and took back the lead with 145 Kevin Hernandez and 152 Sophomore Gael Diaz.  After 152 the Mustangs maintained the lead and then fell short starting from 160-195, losing 46 to 23 against the Stevenson Patriots.  Other Freshman and JV wins came from 120 David Martinez (13-3), 145 Danny Hernandez (15-0), 138 Alex Konewko (8-1), 138 Luis Lugo (7-1), 145 Terrance Moore (6-0), and 145 Anthoni Calixo now 9-0 of the season.

Friday was a short but bitter sweet victory beating Waukegan 63-6.  The Mustangs took many forfeits starting at 113 Bacerra,120 Durlacher,132 Banda,145 K. Hernandez,152 Diaz,170 Rastrelli,182 Nieves, and 195 R. Konewko.  Other winners were Ethan Thomas at 138, Ty Murray at 160, and Abisi Hernandez at HWT.   Our JV winners were James Krusinski, Willy Nieves, Terrance Moore, and Dylan Coe. The Varsity Mustangs are now 9-3 of the season.

Having back to back dual meets the Varsity Mustangs rolled out to Hoffman Estates High School to a 17 Team Tournament Saturday morning. The Mustangs had 11 Varsity Starters missing 3 weight classes.  Missing 3 weights in a line-up it's hard to pull off a team victory but the Magnificent Mustangs pulled through by being crowned the team tournament champs and having all 11 wrestlers place in the top 5! 138 Ethan Thomas and 145 Kevin Hernandez took 5th place, 152 Gael Diaz and Mikey Nieves took 4th place, and 170 Mac Rastrelli and Abisi Hernandez took 3rd.   The Mustangs had 5 in the finals and 2 Champions to finish with the Tournament Team Trophy.  Placing 2nd was Sr. Ty Murray at 160 and our amazing Freshman 113 Pablo Bacerra and Ethan Banda finishing top 2.  Mundelein Champs came home with the Gold were our two Seniors Bryce Durlacher at 120 and Benji Albavera at 132.  Congratulations to these Grapplers.

The JV Team traveled to Niles West for three duals with Niles West, Taft, and Reaves.  The JV Mustangs started the duals with wrestling host Niles West winning 59-6, then beating Taft 48-24, and finally finishing off with a nail biter against Reaves 36-30.  Winners in the duals include: 126 Ragel 2-0, 126 Krusinski 3-0, 132 Moore 2-0, 138 A. Konewko 3-0, 145 Calixto 3-0, 152 O. Hernandez  1-2, 160 W. Nieves 2-1, 170 R. Konewko 3-0, and 182 Coe 2-1. The Mundelein JV finished 3-0 and now 7-1 in duals.

The Frosh Soph traveled to Conant High School for an Individual Tournament.  Having 4 placers in the Tournament.  Our 2nd place finishers were 120 Neftali Cernas, 126 David Martinez, and 220 Celso Cabrera finishing 2-1 in the tournament.  The Mustangs had 1 Champs at 145 Danny Hernandez  went 3-0 and is now 15-0 of the season.  Great week and weekend for the Mustang Wrestling Team.  Keep Grinding.

Around MHS

The Art of the Doodle, was created in part by you, all work displayed has been sourced from your classes: worksheets, handouts, homework, notes, etc. Believe it or not, doodling is a very powerful cognitive tool. It can help students better listen by keeping their mind and focus active. Personally if I don’t have something to do with my hands I am bound to tune out.

Some researchers suspect doodling may help the brain remain active by engaging its "default networks"—regions that maintain a baseline of activity in the cerebral cortex when outside stimuli are absent, the Lancet study says. People who were encouraged to doodle while listening to a list of people's names being read were able to remember 29% more of the information on a surprise quiz later, according to a 2009 study in Applied Cognitive Psychology. -WSJ

Below are some resources about doodling, including a great short segment from CBS Sunday Morning News.

If you have time to it would be great to play the clip for your classes.
