Science Saturdays!

Science Saturdays is a free program running for 10 Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. It is about to start this fall session and will be online. The students get training on basic to sophisticated biomedical laboratory techniques. At the end of the program, they get an exam, and, if successful, they receive a certificate that they can use for either college application and laboratory employment.

The most engaged students receive invitations to participate in our INSPIRE program, a paid summer hands-on research program.

The deadline for applications for the Science Saturdays program is October 15. The link for the applications to the Science Saturdays Program is:     Science Saturdays (wufoo.com)

MHS to conduct ALICE intruder drill on October 26, 2021

On Tuesday, October 26th, students and staff at Mundelein High School, in cooperation with the Mundelein Police Department, will participate in an ALICE intruder drill.  Each year, the State of Illinois requires school districts to conduct an intruder drill to prepare students and staff for an active threat that may occur on campus.  The October 26th drill will include information about the ALICE protocol, as well as several practice scenarios.  Each scenario will be delivered in the form of an overhead announcement and will be conducted within each classroom.  Students and staff will not be exiting their classrooms and will not be participating in active shooter simulations.  This exercise will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.  If you have any questions or if you would like your student to “opt-out,” of the exercise, please inform Mr. Paul Thatcher, Dean of Students, pthatcher@d120.org, prior to October 26th.

Social Emotional Lesson for October

On Tuesday, October 19th all MHS students will view a social-emotional presentation about Depression Awareness. The purpose of this presentation is to educate students about the signs, symptoms, and possible treatments for Depression. Students will also learn about additional resources and supports both in and out of school. The presentation, which consists of a video created and recorded by our school social workers and counselors, will be delivered by teachers following third period classes. It will also be emailed to all students who have study hall or a free period at that time. Because it is important that families have access to this critical information, as well, links to the presentations will be shared in next week’s Principal’s Blog as well as via social media.

While this presentation is designed to inform and empower, we understand that the topic of Depression can trigger strong feelings or reactions. If you believe your student might need assistance during or after the presentation, please talk to your student in advance so they know what to expect and can seek assistance as needed. All students are able to reach out to their counselor, social worker, or school psychologist at any time by stopping into the office, emailing, or completing the Request for Social-Emotional Support form linked here: https://forms.gle/a1a8Wrc7zbtm29ARA.

If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s involvement in this presentation, please reach out to a member of your student’s support team or to Dr. Jessica Herrmann, Director of Student Services, at jherrmann@d120.org or 847-949-2200 x1420. Thank you for your support!

Varsity:

The Boys’ Varsity soccer team capped off its last 5 games of the regular season with a record of 4-0-1.  This is great momentum heading into the IHSA playoffs next week.  Senior Night was a success as the Mustangs defeated Lakes with a score of 2-0.  Carson Kowalski (assisted by David Bonilla) put the Mustangs ahead early in the 1st half, and Omar Mangato (assisted by Frankie Jimenez) put the Eagles to bed with his 2nd half goal.  The Mustangs look to host the Lake Zurich Bears in their semi-final match up in this year’s regional here at home.  Come out and support your Mustangs!

Congrats BSC JV Soccer - North Suburban Champs!

JV1:

The JV1 boys soccer team has had an incredible season full of quality soccer and tremendous growth.  JV 1 finished the season as NSC Conference Champions for the 2nd straight year in a row and with a final record of 12-2-3.  45 total goals to cap off an unbelieve season and we cannot wait to see what is in store for next season!  Congrats on the many successes and it is always a great day to be a Mustang

The JV2 soccer team finished their season strong, winning 7 of their last 8 games to finish the season just under .500. This included closing out conference with consecutive wins against Lake Zurich, Warren, Lake Forest and Zion Benton. The Mustangs also won their opening match in the conference tournament in Waukegan against Lake Zurich. (Unfortunately the remaining games were canceled due to weather/field availability before the team could finish their run at the tournament championship.)

Boys and Girls cross country waiting for the start

Boys Cross Country

Coaches Corner: Kurt Rutz

Boys cross country saw one meet this week, traveling to the Lakes Sunset Invitational where they placed 7th out of 10 teams in the varsity race.  First in for the Mustangs was Tom Russ followed by Jacob Hall, Marco Delacruz, Alberto Diaz and Finn Keegan rounding out the scoring for the team.   The Lakes Invite is held on a scenic course that showcases fall running at it's best and attracts teams from all over Northern Illinois.

Additionally, the guys went to support our feeder schools this past weekend who were running to qualify for their state meets.  It was a joyous day as we watched the CSMS boys qualified for state while being coached by alumni runner Dario Carrillo.

Up-coming Meets:  The NSC meet is Saturday, October 16 at 10:00am at the Waukegan Sports Complex and on Tuesday, October 19th they travel to the Buffalo Grove Invitational.
