Teacher Appreciation Week

Show Choir Virtual Guest Speaker
MHS  welcomed Sabrina Sloan to chat with choir and theatre students during a Google Hangout on Tuesday.  Choir Director Cory Thompson went to undergrad with Sabrina and sang in an a capella group with her.Sabrina has been in the original Broadway cast of Hairspray, in Motown the Musical, in a tour of In the Heights, and is now the Angelica in the LA show of Hamilton.  She is a wife and mom to two small kids, and balances her performing professional life with the demands of being a working mom.

She talked to the MHS kids about her musical journey, as well as the importance of working hard and her challenges with vocal health.  She talked them through what a typical Broadway audition looks like, how to start caring for their voices now, and how it took her a long time to recognize the best way to care for her instrument.  One of the best things she shared with the students was how she was thinking of our students during this time, especially our Seniors.  She said she can't imagine how they are feeling, not being able to do their final performances.  She told them that when she looks back on her life, she doesn't think about what she did NOT get to do, but remembers what she DID get to do.  Sabrina encouraged the students to hold on to the memories they have of what they HAVE gotten to while in high school.  It was a great perspective for the kids!

After the interview, Sabrina commented "They were an inspiration and it warmed my heart to spend time reflecting with them!  Happy Graduation Class of 2020!"

We were so honored that Sabrina took time from her family to spend time with our MHS students.
