Mustang News - May 1, 2020

Happy May 1st!  As we approach the last month of the school year and in light of all that has happened this spring, I want to thank our MHS families for continuing to support the efforts of educating students virtually.  In my conversations with students and staff in the last week, it is clear everyone misses being in the building and being together.  In addition, everyone seems committed to making the best of our situation...Thank you!

Mundelein students earn awards in two video contests
The Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the same organization that does the Emmys, awarded Mundelein senior Allan Rodriguez a Crystal Pillar Award for his short fiction film titled “Somnum (sleep)”.  The Midwest Chapter covers a region from Southern Illinois to Northern Wisconsin.

The Midwest Media Educators Association video festival, with more than 50 schools competing,
Allan Rodriguez and Gabe Goldman
presented a first-place finish in the seven-day challenge category to  Rodriguez and senior Gabe Goldman for their short film titled “For a Rainy Day.” “It has been a goal after every year Mr. Meister brings us to this event to be the ones up on stage talking about how we made our first-place finish.  I am bummed COVID-19 took that away (virtual event), but was still really excited to get first-place. There are a lot of tough schools that entered this category," Goldman said.

"This is quite an honor to win this award," said Kent Meister, Media instructor at MHS. "This is the same organization that handles the Emmys each year.” The Midwest Chapter covers a region from Southern Illinois to Northern Wisconsin.

Bri Sierzega
Another notable finish included a second place award to Senior Bri Sierzega in the commercial category with more than 50 entries for a commercial she made for local Mundelein accountant Joe
Modica and Associates as a class project.  “I loved that Bri was honored for some great video work, but I am also excited about what she learned through the process," Meister said. Sierzega met with a client, listened to what he wanted, and designed a piece that met the needs of his business.
"She did a great job, and I am grateful to Mr. Modica for giving her this experience," Meister said.

All three videos are available to be viewed through links available on the Mundelein Fine and Applied Arts Facebook page as well as the MHS Film Club homepage.

Mundelein High School Jazz Ensemble invited to perform at the 74th Annual Midwest Clinic
The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic is an international festival that welcomes roughly 18,000 participants every year from all 50 states and 40 international countries.  Receiving an invitation to
perform at this festival is highly selective and a great honor and recognition for the Mundelein High School Jazz Ensemble students and school community in general.  ¬The Clinic will run from December 16 through 19, 2020 at McCormick Place West in Chicago.

Each year, the Board of Directors selects two to four high school jazz bands from around the world to perform at the conference.  In the past two years the high school jazz bands have come from Waxahachie, TX; Mandeville, LA; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Tuscon, AZ; Jacksonville, FL; Bloomington, IN; and Hoover, AL.  This is the first time a HS Jazz Ensemble from Illinois has been invited to perform since 2016 and this is the FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY that Mundelein High School has received an invitation! #mundypride

“With the uncertainty of all of the events on the near and distant horizon, the Midwest Conference may happen or not, but we are extremely honored to be asked to perform and will move forward making plans to prepare for the performance.  It should shape up to be a fun fall!,” said Andy Sturgeon who directs the instrumental music program at MHS with Jerald Shelato.

“There are so many things that are unknown in today’s world right now and our students are missing out on the ‘normal’ end of their school year.  I am constantly thinking about all of our students (and especially seniors) and thinking about those final band rehearsals that we aren’t holding and those band concerts that have been cancelled,” Sturgeon lamented. “ I am hopeful that sharing this type of happy and uplifting news can help us all see through the current fog and share in the celebrations that this year’s seniors and that this year’s band students have had (Jazz Ensemble performance at IMEC, Honors Wind Ensemble selected for Superstate, Marching Mustangs outstanding performance at RMU… and now Jazz Ensemble’s selection for the Midwest Clinic)…. and look forward to future opportunities that are coming soon!  Please be on the lookout for things we are doing as a band to honor our seniors,” Sturgeon concluded.

2020-21 National Honor Society Officers Chosen
Last week, National Honor Society officer elections were held to select the 2020-21 officers.  The newly elected officers met virtually with the outgoing officers.  NHS members are hoping to have their final celebration and chord ceremony before graduation.  The new NHS officers will start on community projects after Mother's Day.
