Recognition

Golden Apple surprises MHS teacher with award for Excellence in Teaching
Golden Apple, a leading Illinois nonprofit committed to recognizing exemplary educators and developing future educators, surprised Sara Blair Winter-Rosenberg, a teacher at Mundelein High School, on Monday, March 18 with the highly respected Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. The annual award, which recognizes and honors outstanding teachers for their role in building a stronger, better-educated society, was presented in her classroom in front of students and school leadership.

Following a competitive process, the 2019 award recipients were  selected from more than 550 nominations of high school teachers from 71 Illinois counties. The field was narrowed to 32 finalists and from that group 10 were chosen in Illinois.

Winter-Rosenberg has been teaching at Mundelein High School since 2012 in the World  Languages department. She currently teaches Honors Spanish 5, Honors Spanish Heritage Learners 4 and Spanish Heritage Learners 3.

The 2019 award recipients will be featured on a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) one-hour TV program. The livestream of the show taping will air on Golden Apple’s Facebook page on May 18 and the edited PBS broadcast will air on multiple future dates.

As a highly-valued component of this recognition, Northwestern University, Golden Apple’s partner for more than 30 years, provides a Spring Sabbatical to award recipients at no cost. In addition, each Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient receives a $5,000 cash award. They also become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who support current and future teachers and deepen the learning of students. An important part of a Fellows’ mission is to share their expertise and mentor Golden Apple Scholars, who are aspiring teachers with a desire to teach in Illinois’ schools-of-need.

“In honoring and developing K-12 teachers, Northwestern University and the Golden Apple Foundation are committed to improving teaching, learning and the lives of kids across the state of Illinois,” said Timothy Dohrer, PhD, Director of the Master of Science in Education Program at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy.

Founded in 1985, Golden Apple innovates teacher preparation and leadership to transform both the careers of teachers as well as the lives of students in Illinois. More than 1,000 Scholars are currently teaching across Illinois.

Congratulations to Blair from the entire MHS Community!

Announcements

Information Needed When Calling Student in with Illness
At MHS we have students who, for medical reasons, are highly susceptible to infections and are at a significant risk for their lives due to a rare genetic immune deficiency.  We ask for your help in keeping your students home if they have been running a fever with a frequent cough or painful throat.  When calling the attendance line for students who need to stay home, please leave a detailed message that includes the specific symptoms and reason for their absence. Please alert the school nursing staff of any new diagnosis of an illness that can be contagious. The families of these highly susceptible students are then able to get added medical treatment to help boost their ability to avoid getting sick if they are aware of a current infectious process.  We highly recommend students experiencing illness should not return to school until they are 24 hours fever or symptom free.  Students are encouraged to stay in touch with their teachers by email when they are home sick.  Accommodations can be made for missed work due to illness.
Thank you very much for your care and cooperation.

Class of 2020 Meningococcal Vaccine Requirement Announcement
All current 11th grade students are required to have documented proof of receiving the meningoccal vaccine prior to the start of 12th grade year.  We ask that you check your records and/or contact your doctor’s office for this proof to turn into the school as soon as possible. Supplies become depleted in late summer and early fall. Please do not risk having your student excluded from school at the beginning of their senior year. You can turn in your documented proof directly to the school nurse or to the front office.  Thank you very much for your prompt attention to this important matter.

Seniors, this time of year, you are likely receiving your financial aid award letters and emails from the colleges that you have been admitted to, and it’s time to figure out how affordable your options really are.  These letters are formatted in many different ways, and they can be extremely confusing.  Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Please join us the Tuesday after break, April 2, during either 4th period or 5th period to learn how to decode your financial aid award letters and compare them accurately.  To be best prepared, please bring a copy of each of your award letters with you to the session. Register in Naviance by clicking on the “Colleges” tab → “Home” →  Scroll down to the bottom where it says “College Visits”→ “Show More”→ Click the “Register” button next to the class period they plan to attend.

This event is for students only.  Parents, we invite you to have a conversation with your student after they return home and contact us with any questions. Boys Water Polo
Boys water polo: Mundelein snares title in own tournament
By John Phelps
Daily Herald Correspondent

"I just really like moving around in the water and I have awesome teammates to work with," said Oleinik, the team's leading goal scorer after two weeks of the new season. Oleinik isn't the Mustangs' only weapon offensively. There's terrific senior leadership with Ryan Zentz, Matt Allore, Jake Garcia, Hunter Magee, Jeff Boudreau, Ben Ford and keeper Logan Bradshaw. "We're a lot closer as a team this year and have a bunch of guys stepping up," Oleinik said. "We're continually building the offense up and working on different plays."

Oleinik can hurt you in many ways, whether at close range, a backhand goal, or from 2-meters out.
On Saturday afternoon, he scored in a multitude of ways as the high-flying Mustangs continued their early-season surge. In the title game of their own tourney, Oleinik popped in 6 goals while assisting on two others as the Mustangs toppled Lockport 16-7. Mundelein finished 4-0 in the event and also won the Palatine tournament for the first time last weekend. "He (Oleinik) just knows how to get open and get position," said Mustangs coach Russ Gates, whose team is ranked seventh by illpolo.com and is now 9-1 overall.

"And once he gets position, that provides a good opportunity for a goal or an ejection."
If you key in on him, though, opponents better be ready for a plethora of other weapons like Garcia and Zentz, who each had hat tricks against Lockport. "Last year we had a ton of juniors and I don't think in their mind they achieved everything they wanted to," added Gates, whose team hosts Buffalo Grove Tuesday.

"We're averaging 4-5 more goals on offense and allowing a goal less defensively from last year."
Mundelein has quite a keeper in Logan Bradshaw, who stopped 10 shots against the Porters. "He worked hard in the offseason and is so much stronger with his legs, so he doesn't have to use his hands as much staying up," noted Gates of his keeper, who's allowing just 5 goals a game.

Mundelein’s Varsity took all 3 games over the weekend and the Vernon Hills Quad. Nice job!

Boys Track
Mundelein traveled to the Lake Michigan Invite at Carthage College
From Coaches corner:  Our Mustangs came away with 6th place out of over 30 teams.  Below I've attached the complete results, but I wanted to go over the highlights here.

The meet started off with a bang, as the 4 x 800 relay was a dogfight between our Mustangs and Evanston.  The lead seesawed back and forth as the 2 teams pulled away from the rest of the field.  Evanston pulled out the narrow victory, less than a second ahead of our quartet of Carter Schorr, Aidan Afonso, Trevor Werner, and Mikey Parduhn.  Our time of 8:12.25 is our fastest time of the season by 9 seconds, and one of the fastest times in the State. Another relay performed very well, as the 4 x 400 relay took 4th overall in 3:36.18, with Carter Schorr, Trevor Werner, Mikey Parduhn, and Cody Gehrett doing the honors.  Their time is the fastest ever run indoors by a Mustang team that I can find record of by 2 seconds. The other top performance of the day came from our 3200M runners.  Dillon Blake and Robert St. Clair took 1st and 3rd overall, with Dillon's time of 9:33.02 also puts him among the best runners in the State.

Our other scorers were-
Carter Schorr- 7th in the 800M, 2:04.89
Aidan Afonso- 6th in the 1600M, 4:35.91 (PR) Mateusz Brak- tied for 8th in HJ, 5'8"
Great job, Mustangs!
