Parent Teacher Conferences
Mundelein High School Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be held on Wednesday, March 13.
Students will be dismissed at 1:40 pm on March 13.
Conferences will run from 2:10 pm – 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm.
All conferences are 10 minutes in length.
The conference scheduler will be open March 4 at 8:30 am through March 10 at 10 pm

Immunization requirements
To the Families of All Incoming FreshmanPer the state of Illinois all incoming freshman are required to provide a State of Illinois School Physical (not a sports physical) and to show proof of having the first dose of the Meningococcal conjugate vaccine(MCV4). Please note Meningococcal B is NOT required and cannot replace Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine.

Per the state of Illinois all incoming seniors are required to show proof of having the second dose of the Meningococcal conjugate vaccine(MCV4). Please note Meningococcal B is NOT required and cannot replace Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine. Toward the start of the new school year, vaccine supplies tend to run out.
Please have this done sooner than later to avoid the possibility of your child being excluded from school.
Recognition
IHSA Art ExhibitionThis past Sunday was another amazing event for the Illinois High School Art Exhibition.
Once again our MHS Art Students shined, were well represented, and awarded. Our 15 Seniors were all awarded major scholarship offers, totaling in over $1.5 Million! That is more than a Million dollars up from last year’s total. Our seniors include: Tiffany Fuller, Arthur Thompson, Abigail Ambrose, Sarah Urban, Katherine Velez, Angela David, Megan Griparis, Natalie Williams, Karina Lopez, Sydney Winslow, Lacey Luther, Matthew Mangoni, Morgan Shurtz, Vae Faulkner, and Brian Hernandez.
Our underclassmen were also well represented at the IHSAE General Exhibition, those students include: Becca Panos. Jay Jamison, Max Castillion, Vikram Chandramouli, and senior Sydney Winslow.
A special shout out to junior Becca Panos for being awarded an Early College Scholarship from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and winning a Visionary Award. There are only 3 Visionary Awards given out and is equivalent to a BEST IN SHOW AWARD! Becca is now the second MHS student to win this award in the shows 6 year history. MHS has won this award in consecutive years now, must be something in the water.

Robotics Compete at State
Last weekend our robotics team competed at the Illinois State VEX Robotics Tournament – High school Division. Our team finished 28th out of 56 teams with a combined 6-7-1 record from two robots. This is an outstanding achievement from our rookie team who has exceeded my expectations in every way. I am always amazed at how they keep moving forward with a growth mindset. When I asked how can we improve next season our students unanimously agreed on “not being comfortable with the first solution that works, and that they have to keep improving”. Truly a #MustangWay!

Tickets on sale now for Winterfest - this festival dance event on March 16 inlcludes a DJ plus Silent Disco plus video games plus art room plus giant old school games like Jenga and Connect Four, and more. So much to do, so little time!
For the past three years Mundelein High School students have swept the first through third place finishes in the American Legion Americanism Essay Contest. They did it again for 2019 taking the top awards.
Responding to the question “What are my responsibilities as a US citizen?” the MHS students earned the top three prizes along with the Best in Presentation category.
The annual essay contest, in place since 1922, is co-sponsored by the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of Illinois. The local judge is American Legion Auxiliary Unit 867 President Arlene Lolley.
The MHS winners include: First Place: Mackenzie Stewart, junior; Second Place: Nayeli Torres, senior; Third Place: Charles Fladhammer, senior; and Best in Presentation: Clarissa Weinckowski, senior. Winners receive cash awards and certificates.
“Most of the essays reveal how the students take initiative and make improvements in their communities,” Lolley explained. “Mackenzie’s focused on how she wanted to be the change by establishing a law club called Legal Eagles that focuses on issues that she could tap government officials to help address, such as human trafficking.
A total of 19 area students submitted essays for review.
2014 grad named Fulbright Scholar
Adina Cianciotto, MHS Class of 2014 and a 2018 graduate of Northwestern University, was recently named a Fulbright Scholar and will work and study abroad.

Cianciotto is already doing research in cognitive neuroscience in several laboratories and is published in the Journal of Cognition and Neuroethics. She worked at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago), the most prestigious rehabilitation hospital in the United States and is currently ranked number 1 in US News and World Report. She also won the Outstanding Achievement Award in Korean Language and Culture from Northwestern.
“I am passionate about a neurophysiological approach to elucidate behavior, human thought, and to better understand the underpinnings of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders,” she said of her work.
“Regarding research experience, this is an excellent start to her career,” said AP Psychology instructor Dean Petros. “Since cognitive neuroscience is "my thing" academically I can actually say that she makes me jealous of her at some level. Her studies align with my academic interests,” he said.
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The Fulbright Program awards approximately 8,000 grants annually. Roughly 1,600 U.S. students, 4,000 foreign students, 1,200 U.S. scholars, and 900 visiting scholars receive awards, in addition to several hundred teachers and professionals. Approximately 370,000 "Fulbrighters" have participated in the Program since its inception in 1946.
Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in over 160 countries worldwide.
2015 grad claims SEC Title for Auburn
Erin Falconer claimed the first SEC Title of her career on Thursday at the 2019 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, winning the 200 free to claim Auburn’s first individual conference title since 2017. Her win was one of three podium finishes for Auburn on the night as Aly Tetzloff and Liam McCloskey each finished second in the 100 fly.
“Last SECs, last 200 free, I’m just going to have fun with it,” Falconer said. “The last 25 (yards) I saw some of the girls coming up on me and I knew I had to get my hand on the wall first. We had a lot of second places today and I didn’t want to be second.”
“Hats off to the staff, to the entire swimming and diving program and ultimately to those three athletes,” Auburn head coach Gary Taylor said. “Those three athletes swam really tough tonight. Aly with an outstanding performance in going under 51 for the first time in her career, followed by Liam fighting tooth-and-nail right to the finish for that second-place performance.
“And then finally Erin Falconer, who from Day One has embraced the staff, embodied The New Plains and the idea of getting back to a championship culture,” Taylor said. “I couldn’t be more proud to have her become the first SEC Champion under this staff.”
Activities
MHS opts for Winter Fest to replace Turnabout Dance
For many years, Mundelein High School held a Turnabout Dance in February or March. Based on student feedback and low student attendance at Turnabout, the Student Leadership organization decided that a change was needed.
“We found the traditional Turnabout structure discouraged students from attending unless they had a date,” said Patrick Gaughan, advisor. “We want our events to be inclusive and welcoming to all students,” he explained.
Winter Fest will take place Saturday, March 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. in a variety of locations.
The main focus will still be dancing. In addition there will be a separate dance floor in the media center where students will wear headphones. They will be able to change the color on their headphones to change the station. In the art rooms there will be a chalkboard room where students can write messages and create art for photo-ops. In another area students can take a break from dancing to play “old school” video games as well as oversized Jenga, Chess, Connect 4 and Checkers. In the gym students can challenge their friends to a round on the Eliminator. Other areas will include a Selfie Station, Photo Booth and a T-shirt signing station.
“We had a chance to bring a couple student leaders to Glenbard East High School’s Winter Fest last weekend,” Gaughan said. “The dance was a great experience because it allowed for a variety of activities and opportunities for students to have fun.”
To gear up for the event Student Leadership selected several staff members to wear Winter Fest shirts and help spread the word. On Tuesday, Feb. 26, a DJ will be in the cafeteria to give students a sample of what to expect at Winter Fest. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 27.

Boys Swimming/DivingMundelein freshman Fathallah shatters records at sectional

All Mundelein's Omar Fathallah had to do was look at his teammates.
"My vision was blocked so I couldn't see (the scoreboard) right away. But I knew I made it when I saw my teammates cheering me on once I touched," said Fathallah, only a freshman.

Must be the boys swimming sectionals at Highland Park, where dreams of heading to New Trier and the state swimming and diving finals were on the line. And of course with that usually accompanies a ton of nerves. "I was so nervous," added Fathallah. "I'm still nervous but excited." Fathallah shattered a Highland Park pool record as well as a personal best when he won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.07. Tobe Obochi of the host Giants also qualified with a time of 21.08 in the 50 freestyle. "It's incredible. I can't believe I did it." Well, believe it.
Fathallah calmed the nerves a little bit later when he also qualified by winning the 100 freestyle in another personal best and pool record time of 45.81.

Mundelein downs Prairie Ridge

Scottie Ebube had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Jack Bikus added 20 points and 5 rebounds to lead Mundelein's boys basketball team to a 63-45 non-conference win over Prairie Ridge Monday night. Conor Enright added 9 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists for the Mustangs (19-10) while Andrew Gonzalez had 9 points.
