The MHS Robotics Team flew to California Feb. 15 to compete in a Signature Event, VEX Robotics Tournament, hosted by Google. The competition is a nationwide, invitation-only event, reserved for those who have won tournaments and/or received distinguished awards in their respective states. MHS Robotics was the only team to represent Illinois.
“Though we were unable to participate in the final elimination bracket, our team was able to compete and score in every match throughout the day,” said Manny Aldana, Robotics Team advisor. “It was a great opportunity for our students and they remain fired up for state competition this weekend,” he said.
Aside from the competition, the team also had the chance to spend some time with an MHS graduate, Peter Kowalczyk, Class of 2012, who works at Google. He took the group on a tour of the Google Campus in Mountain View. “During the tour, he was able to share stories about the time when he was in Robotics at MHS gave advice to our students about how to create a path leading to a career that is both lucrative and fulfilling,” Aldana said.

Mundelein school districts to host free screening of film; babysitting availableMundelein Elementary District 75 and Mundelein High School District 120 will host a free screening of the movie, Being Enye, on Monday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. (An enye is the symbol over an “n” in Spanish.) Denise Soler Cox, a Latina filmmaker and cultural storyteller, shines light on the Enye Experience through her documentary featuring first person narratives from first generation American-born Latinos, also known as Enyes.
Following the screening of the film a panel discussion will take place with local Enyes to include students, teachers and members of the community. Babysitting will be available for parents of young children; however, middle school age students and older are encouraged to see the movie.
According to Stacey Gorman, MHS director of curriculum and instruction, there are three main outcomes expected from the screening: to explore the challenges first generation LatinXs feel as they constantly navigate between trying to embrace the dominant cultural identity of the United States and the cultural identity of being a LatinX (those born in the US with at least one parent from a Spanish-speaking country);to discuss the discrimination faced by first generation LatinXs; and to build pride in what it means to be LatinX.
“Hidden Figures” at MHS
BSU (Black Student Union) of Mundelein High School District 120 will host a free screening of the movie, “Hidden Figures,” on Thursday, Feb. 28th at 3:30 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium.
Hidden Figures tells the incredible untold story of Katherine Jonson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) – brilliant African-American women working at NASA who served as the brains behind the launch into orbit of astronaut John Glenn, a stunning achievement that turned around the Space Race. The visionary trio crossed all gender and racial lines and inspired generations. - Twentieth Century Fox
