Recognition

MHS announces 64 Illinois State Scholars
Mundelein High School Principal Anthony Kroll has announced that 64 students from the MHS graduating class of 2019 have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission [ISAC], the state agency committed to helping to make college accessible and affordable for Illinois families, confers this recognition to top Illinois high school students annually. This year, more than 21,000 honorees join the other top students who have been honored for their academic achievements since the designation was first introduced in 1958.
Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 757 high schools across the state. Illinois State Scholars are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank.

The 64 MHS students who have earned the designation of Illinois State Scholar include Aidan Afonso, Morgan Albertsen, Matthew Allore, Isabel Alviar, Abigail Ambrose, Elianna Bender, Jenna Bishop, Logan Bradshaw, Cameron Brown, Kathryn Carpender, Isabella Cartland, Diego Cisneros, Elizabeth Clow, Andrea Cordova, Kathleen Cory, Jake Cumberland, Anushka Desai, Joseph Dolff, Caleb Engelhardt, Hana Fakhoury, Stephanie Fernandez Cahue, Sean Finerty, Sophie Fiorovante, Jessica Franzen, Stephanie Griparis, Mikayla Gruber, Jonathan Gustafson, Jessie Haro, Katherine Hay, Taylor Heath, Jack Hiegel, Jillian Hoffstadt, Josephine Hutson, Isabelle Jurasz, Elizabeth Krauss, John Lay, Alexander Lentsch, Christyan Leon Ventura, Karina Lopez, Hannah Losoff, Margaret Lukas, Sofia Lundquist, Lacey Luther, Hunter Magee, Luigi Maligaya, Sydnie Mathews, Trevor Neumaier, Anthony Oleinik, Albert Olorvida, Victoria Ozymko, Michael Parduhn, Komol Patel, Sarah Pechtl, Daisy Perez, Molly Podraza, Katelyn Ponce, Megan Rastrelli, Ryann Ray, Sophia Riportella, Nicole Robb, Joseph Salit, Eve Slomka, Robert St. Clair, Melanie Umbdenstock and Thea Vogt.

The Mundelein High School College and Career Resource Center [CCRC] under the direction of College Counselor Andrea Rusk, provides a number of services for college-bound services throughout the year including College Night, Financial Aid presentations, Scholarship assistance, FAFSA Workshop and many more to assist students in their transition from high school to post-secondary education. In addition, ISAC offers free financial aid and college access events to assist students and families with the college-going process.

“We’re extremely proud of these students for being recognized as Illinois State Scholars and wish them well in their preparations for the next phase of their lives,” Kroll said.

Stand-Up students take part in youth summit
On Friday, November 30, STAND-UP students Aileen Cirilo, Maggie Lukas, Stephanie Gutierrez, and Megan Rastrelli participated in the Catalyst Youth Summit at the Lincolnshire Marriott organized by Adlai E. Stevenson High School students.

Nearly 100 high school students from around the state came together to discuss the negative impact of the commercialization of marijuana in the state of Illinois. Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim offered opening remarks, followed by Kelly Krenzer, who shared her story of the loss of her 20-year-old son to an intoxicated driver. Newly elected state Representative Daniel Didech worked with breakout groups on speaking with legislators. Special thanks to Representative Didech who helped STAND UP students fine-tune their elevator speech to promote teen drug prevention! Watch out world, our youth are ready to STAND-UP for the health and safety of Illinois youth!

STAND-UP is a community coalition that prevents teen drug use and promotes healthy choices so students achieve their best future. STAND-UP students meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 8:30 am - 9:15 am (on late start days). Members say they are a part of STAND-UP because they gain valuable leadership skills and want to make a difference in the larger Mundelein community. They also say it looks great on college, scholarship and job applications! Contact Dean Thatcher or Officer Balogh to learn more!

Scholarships Are Open!
The Patrick Zepeda Athlete in Service Award, worth $1,500, is available to a first generation (neither parent has received a bachelor’s degree in the US) Mundelein High School graduating senior who has been active in athletics and has impacted their home or community through service.

Patrick Zepeda was the father of former, current, and future Mustang Athletes. Patrick could often be seen cheering for his children on the football field, softball field, and basketball or volleyball court.  He was known for always offering a helping hand and as a lifelong sports lover; he came to adopt the Mustangs as “his team.”  This scholarship honors his legacy of service and athleticism.

The application for this scholarship includes an essay, cover sheet, and coach’s recommendation that must be returned to the CCRC by 12pm on Thursday, January 31, 2019.  The application can be found at the link at the end of this email (scroll to the very bottom), or by logging in to your Naviance account.

This scholarship, and many more scholarship opportunities, can also be accessed through the Scholarship Link found under Colleges Home in Naviance.  Additionally, we strongly encourage students to continue checking the MHS Specific Scholarships (Click HERE) document to view which additional scholarships that are guaranteed to go to MHS graduates may be opening soon and begin preparing for these.

Boys Bowling
By Rusty Silber
Daily Herald Correspondent
Mundelein has a good core of bowlers for a first year team, led by Owen Jones and Nick Prochnow. They were really the ones that got the program going for this year and are trying to help the young inexperienced on the Mustangs' team of 11. "It's been a lot of fun so far," said Mundelein coach Chris Sweno, who moved back from Texas for a math teaching job at his alma mater (2007). "Some of the guys were throwing 80 to 100 (score) games a month ago are now throwing 130 to 150. It's a little frustrating at times, but they want to be there every game and I want them to be there every game. It's fun watching them grow and watching Nick and Owen lead the team. Seeing them work with the bowlers is a lot of fun." Jones led the way for the Mustangs on Wednesday with a 692 series with games of 259, 178 and 255.

The sophomore reached the sectional last season as an individual, but likes the fact there's a team with him now. "It's amazing, because I've always wanted Mundelein to have a bowling team," Jones said. "It's been a dream of mine since I saw my older brother (Ryan) bowl in the sectionals. I was hoping when I got to high school, I could do the same thing and there could be a team." Prochnow threw a 641 with games of 239, 221 and 181. The other Mustangs' bowlers were Miles Chubin (443), Jacob Buysse (400), Cody Gehrett (354) and Jacob Franzen (294). "We work so hard at this and hard work pays off so much," Prochnow said.
