School Offices Closed for Thanksgiving
In observance of Thanksgiving all Mundelein High School offices will be closed, and there are no classes Wednesday, November 21, Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23.
Parents/Guardians encouraged to complete 5Essentials Survey
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to complete the 5Essentials Survey that is now available online. The survey allows for school administrations to learn about the highlights and concerns of parents in their districts. The survey is available in English and Spanish and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Only one parent per household may complete the survey; however, if parents have more than one child who attends MHS, they may choose to participate multiple times.

Calendar Updates - Important Changes 2018-2019 School Calendar!Due to State of Illinois mandated testing in April, please be aware of these changes in the calendar.
- Thursday, March 7, 2019: Late Start day-classes begin at 9:25am and dismiss at 3:05pm
- Friday, March 8, 2019: Regular day of school-classes begin at 7:45am and dismiss at 3:05pm
- Wednesday, March 13, 2019: Early dismissal-classes begin at 7:45am and dismiss at 1:40pm
- Wednesday, March 13, 2019: Parent/Teacher conferences 2:10pm to 4:30pm, and 5:30pm to 8:00 pm
- Tuesday, April 9, 2019: State testing for all Sophomores and Juniors. Non-attendance day for Freshmen and Seniors
- Wednesday, April 10, 2019: State testing for all Freshmen. Non-attendance day for Sophomores and Seniors
Semester 1 Final Exams
Semester final exams are approaching! The final exam schedule for December 18, 19, and 20 is below.
- Students must be in attendance for Final Exam periods in which they have a scheduled class.
- Students in Study Hall or Lunch are not required to attend those periods on their scheduled Final Exam Days.
- Breakfast will still be offered from 7:00am – 7:45am.
- Lunch will be offered between the second and third exam periods (11:00am to 11:30am). Lunch is only offered on Day 1 and Day 2 of finals.
- Students waiting for transportation will be allowed to remain in the cafeteria only.
- Students will not be admitted to the classroom after the bell. Students who arrive late for a final exam will remain in the Cafeteria for the remainder of the final exam period. Students must remain during the class period in order to be eligible to make up the final exam.
- An exam make up period will be available each day of final exams. Students will be held in the cafeteria if they are late and instructed to take the exam at 1:15pm on Day 1 and Day 2 and during the make-up period on Day 3. All make up exams will be in the Assessment Center or completed with the teacher if the teacher wishes. There is an overflow room to the Assessment Center as needed. Make up finals will be administered by assigned Instructional Assistants.
Tech Campus
PM Tech Campus students will continue to attend tech campus on all final exam days. Leaving at their regular
time of 12:35 and returning at 3:25 (Cosmo 4:45), there will be no after school transportation.
AM Tech Campus students will attend tech campus as scheduled on Tuesday, December 18 and will be excused from tech with a calendar conflict for Wednesday and Thursday of final exams (no am tech bus).
Athletic Practices
Tuesday, December 18 and Wednesday, December 19, athletic practices can begin at 1:15 pm. Thursday, December 20, practice can begin at 11:15 am.
If a student is required to attend the final exam Make-Up period, he/she must do this before attending athletic practices.
Academic Centers
The Math Lab, Literacy Center, and Media Center will remain open for students if students are in lunch or study hall during the exam periods.
Activity Bus
An activity bus will run at 3:30pm each day of final exams after the make-up period.
Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Leadership
In 2019, Golden Apple will honor Illinois high school teachers with the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching and one or more school leaders (principals/heads of school) with the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership in honor of Stanley C. Sethna named IHSA Sectional Swimming Coach of the Year
Mundelein High School’s swim and diving head coach, Rahul Sethna, was voted IHSA Sectional
Swimming Coach of the Year at the sectional at Lake Forest High School November 10. The honor was voted on by his peers at the meet.
“This speaks volumes about the job that Rahul does in the swimming circles,” said Troy Parola, MHS athletic director. “He is well respected and is sending six athletes to compete at state this weekend.”
Sethna joined the MHS teaching and coaching staffs in 1997 and has had many outstanding swimming and diving teams during his tenure.
“This is more of a program award as I have great assistant coaches in Kristi Rizzo and Bill Owens, and great kids and parents,” he said. [Our success] is also due to the help of the PE strength teachers Craig Stocker, Bridget Erickson, Todd Parola, Nancy Toland, Kelli Goodwin and Justin Hart who worked with all of our athletes. The award speaks volumes about all of them as well.”
The IHSA State swimming and diving competition will be held Nov. 16-17 at Evanston Township High School.
This weekend, the Robotics team competed in the first VEX Robotics Competition qualifying tournament in Illinois this season. There were 24 teams from different high schools and the MHS team brought back the championship trophy. With this accomplishment comes automatic qualification to compete in the state robotics tournament in March as well as an invitation to the CREATE US OPEN Robotics Tournament in April. We are proud of how the team of freshmen students used their engineering skills in troubleshooting their robots throughout the competition. Our students also represented Mundelein HS very well by carrying themselves professionally throughout the competition.

Activities
Depression Era drama slated for Mundelein Theatre
A beautiful, poetic and heartbreaking story of a fictional family from a rural farming community in southern Indiana is the subject of the fall play at Mundelein Theatre. The Diviners, written by Jim Leonard, Jr. will be presented at Mundelein High School on November 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m., and November 16 at 3:45p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The matinee performance on Friday is only $1 for MHS students. Tickets can be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to each performance. The Diviners is a moving American drama that is centered around the relationship between a young boy blessed with the magical ability to divine water and a former preacher who comes to town looking for work. The ex-preacher soon realizes his real purpose is to help the boy deal with the one traumatic experience that has caused him to fear the very water he divines.
“I first came across this play back in 1985 when I auditioned for a role in the first Chicago production of the play,” said Jonathan Meier, the play’s director. “I did not get cast, but the play always stuck with me.” “It is such a sweet story, following the young boy Buddy (junior Colin Nacion) and his sister Jennie Mae (senior Rachel Larson) as they come to know and love the stranger, C.C. Showers, (junior Colby Willis) who has come to their small town.”
Other seniors in the cast are Jake Cumberland (Ferris) and Sydney Litka (Bea). Rounding out the cast are juniors Ellie Mellen (Norma), Josie Hutson (Darlene), Katie Staroszczyk (Golde), Miriam Mitry (Luella), Ander Nutall (Melvin) and Steven Weiss (Dewey). Allan Rodriguez is the assistant director and Becca Panos and Marta Sikora are the tage managers.
MISSION: The basic mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Program is to collect new unwrapped toys and distribute those toys to less fortunate children at Christmas.
GOAL: The primary goal of Marine Toys for Tots is, through the gift of a new toy, help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America's less fortunate children.
Toys for Tots donation bins will be at the MHS front entrance from November 19 to December 15.
Miles for Mustangs Thanksgiving Day 5K run/walk
Mundelein High School’s 5K run/walk, Miles for Mustangs, will be held Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, beginning at 9 a.m. A one-mile run/walk for children ages 10 and under will begin at 9:30 a.m. with awards for all immediately following. Cost for the event is $25 for the Family 5K, age 11 & up, $ 30 on race day, and $10 for the Kids' Mile for kids 10 and under. Parents or siblings may participate with children in the one-mile free of charge but will not receive a t-shirt.
T-shirts will be provided to all participants registered on or before November 19, 2018 (shirts are not guaranteed after this date). A light breakfast also will be provided for all participants. Click HERE to register.
Online registration closes at midnight on November 19, 2018. Packet pickup is 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on November 21, 2018 in the main entrance of Mundelein High School. All proceeds benefit Mundelein High School Cross Country and Track teams.
MHS Cultural Fair
"It struck me as a surprise to realize that other high schools in our area were hosting events they called “cultural fairs”, but Mundelein High School was not. We have such a diverse student body, so I wondered why we were not using this to our advantage and celebrating the identities that our student body takes pride in. It’s such an honor to be able to lead the project of our first annual cultural fair, entitled Common Ground. After travelling to South Africa this past summer, I gained a deep appreciation and passion for culture in every sense of the word and have made it my mission to recognize and validate the differences found in our student body brought by ethnicity because I think the more we talk about it, the more respect my peers and myself build for each other. With Calvin Terrell’s visit this fall, I believe that the student body has opened their hearts to change, and I hope that Common Ground will be an event that can harness the energy in the air and use it as a platform to foster appreciation of and open communication about culture. - Nov. 14: Writer José Olivarez to present reading and workshop
Writer José Olivarez will read from his debut book of poems, “Citizen Illegal” and will present a writing workshop as part of the College of Lake County Reading Series on Wednesday, Nov. 14. The workshop will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room T347, and the reading begins at 7 p.m. in Room A013 (A Wing Conference Center) at CLC’s Grayslake Campus. Examining one’s own perceptions and biases, and bridging cultural and communication gaps in diverse communities, is the subject of “Chalk Talk,” a traveling photo exhibit that will be on display Nov. 16 to Jan. 11, 2019 in the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the College of Lake County’s Grayslake Campus. Additionally, a dynamic workshop on identity and diversity, led by “Chalk Talk” originator and documentary photographer Wing Young Huie, will take place from 3-4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19 in the gallery. 2019 College Ambassador Application is Open
The MHS College Ambassador program was created with the intention of having a distinguished group of current MHS college-bound seniors serve as peer leaders. These students support our underclassmen who are beginning the college application process they have successfully completed through presentations and workshops.
Upon graduating and going on to their respective colleges, College Ambassadors continue to provide support for our Mustangs during college by allowing students to reach out to them with questions about their campus and by returning to host discussions about college life. MHS alumni to return and talk about college with current students
As part of the college counseling process, MHS College Counselor Andrea Rusk has lined up 12 MHS graduates who will return “home” to talk about college options and opportunities with current MHS students. The 12 will spend part of the day Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the high school.
The group will hold an information session before school starts at 7:45 a.m. followed by roundtable discussions during the first period [7:45 to 8:35 a.m.] They will also be available for the rest of the day to visit teachers’ classrooms by request.
