Volleyball game raises funds for cancer research
Mundelein High School’s girls’ volleyball team hosted a Breast Cancer Volleyball Match vs. Libertyville High School on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Roughly 94 percent of the money raised through this event will go to the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation. Last year, the event collected $4,500 and to date the annual event has raised more than $34,000. The night of the game included raffle baskets at $5 a ticket or five for $20 and a 50/50 raffle for $2 a ticket or 6 for $10, and a pair of Bears game tickets as part of a silent auction.

Area residents are also invited to make straight donations to the cause at the MHS Bookstore. Checks should be made out to Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation.

MHS ART Department Hosts Raku Workshop
On October 24th, the MHS Art Department will host Tim Pfiffner of Great Lakes Clay to lead our art students in a Raku firing workshop. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese process developed for pottery used in tea ceremonies.

Ceramic pieces are glazed with special glazes that will either crackle, luster or turn metallic during the reduction phase.  These pieces are put into a small kiln fueled by a propane burner and within thirty minutes the temperature reaches 1900o.   The hot pottery is then taken out of the kiln and placed in a can filled with combustible material such as straw, leaves, or wood shavings.  This is called the reduction process because the oxygen in the container has been reduced by the burning material.

Raku pottery looks dramatically different from electrically fired ceramics. Glazes can turn copper, gold, purple, or blue. Other glazes will crackle and have dark lines throughout.

This is a wonderful, hands-on workshop that teaches students a different ceramic firing process and allows them to see immediate changes to surface and color right before their eyes.

MHS students to be screened with EKGs; parent volunteers needed
Mundelein High School students will have an opportunity to be screened Wednesday, October 24 for early detection of possible heart problems. The testing is being made possible at the low cost of $15 by the Max Schewitz Foundation named after a 20-year-old Lake County resident who died without warning from a hidden heart condition.

The testing will include the EKG for all participants. Students selected by the cardiologist will also have additional testing that day at no cost. Testing is free for students who are registered with the school to receive free or reduced lunch.

“This is a great opportunity for parents to have their children tested in a familiar setting and to be active in early detection of any possible problems,” said Kathryn Serby who has two freshman students at MHS.

According to the Foundation, high school is an ideal time for someone to have a baseline EKG since the greatest risk of sudden cardiac death is between ages 17 and 22. The EKG is a visual representation of the heart’s function. It is quick, painless and can detect many potentially life-threatening heart conditions.

All efforts are made to respect privacy and modesty. Testing takes place in individual booths, and boys and girls are tested separately. Cardiologist Brian Shortal, MD, will oversee all aspects of testing and interpretation. Results are confidential and are shared only with parents within three weeks of the testing.

Approximately 75 parent volunteers are needed to help with the testing and typically offer two 3.5 hour time slots to volunteers. Parents may volunteer on the website when they register their child.
“We’re happy to partner with the Max Schewitz Foundation to offer this important testing for our students,” said MHS Principal Anthony Kroll. We encourage all our parents to take advantage of this opportunity to have the testing done on Oct. 24.”

To register a student and/or to volunteer, please visit the Foundation website at www.heartsmartekg.org
