Volleyball game to raise funds for cancer research; Bears tickets to be auctioned
Mundelein High School’s girls’ volleyball team will host a Breast Cancer Volleyball Match vs. Libertyville High School Thursday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. in the Main Gym. Admission will be a donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children. A limited number of newly designed t-shirts will be available in the bookstore beginning Monday, Oct. 1. Cost is $10 for short sleeves and $15 for long sleeves.
Roughly 94 percent of the money raised through this event will go to the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation. Last year, the event collected $4,500 and to date the annual event has raised more than $34,000. The night of the game will include raffle baskets at $5 a ticket or five for $20 and a 50/50 raffle for $2 a ticket or 6 for $10. A pair of Bears game tickets will be part of a silent auction.
Area residents are also invited to make straight donations to the cause at the MHS Bookstore. Checks should be made out to Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation.
George Dressen is the head varsity girls’ volleyball coach at MHS.
EKG Testing; parent volunteers needed
Mundelein High School students will have an opportunity to be screened Wednesday, October 24 for early detection of possible heart problems. The testing is being made possible at the low cost of $15 by the Max Schewitz Foundation named after a 20-year-old Lake County resident who died without warning from a hidden heart condition.
The testing will include the EKG for all participants. Students selected by the cardiologist will also have additional testing that day at no cost. Testing is free for students who are registered with the school to receive free or reduced lunch.
“This is a great opportunity for parents to have their children tested in a familiar setting and to be active in early detection of any possible problems,” said Kathryn Serby who has two freshman students at MHS.
According to the Foundation, high school is an ideal time for someone to have a baseline EKG since the greatest risk of sudden cardiac death is between ages 17 and 22. The EKG is a visual representation of the heart’s function. It is quick, painless and can detect many potentially life-threatening heart conditions.
All efforts are made to respect privacy and modesty. Testing takes place in individual booths, and boys and girls are tested separately. Cardiologist Brian Shortal, MD, will oversee all aspects of testing and interpretation. Results are confidential and are shared only with parents within three weeks of the testing.
Approximately 75 parent volunteers are needed to help with the testing and typically offer two 3.5 hour timeslots to volunteers. Parents may volunteer on the website when they register their child.
“We’re happy to partner with the Max Schewitz Foundation to offer this important testing for our students,” said MHS Principal Anthony Kroll. We encourage all our parents to take advantage of this opportunity to have the testing done on Oct. 24.”

Recognition
Four MHS seniors named Commended StudentsMundelein High School Principal, Dr. Anthony Kroll, has announced that four MHS students have been named Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation [NMSC], which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented students.
Seniors Joseph Dolff, John Lay, Komol Patel and Robert St. Clair are the recipients of the recognition.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise, according to the NMSC. Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test [PSAT/NMSQT].
“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said a spokesperson for NMSC. “We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Mundelein trips up Barrington
Before Mundelein's boys soccer team resumes its stretch of games against quality conference opponents, the Mustangs picked up a quality win Saturday.Mundelein rode a two-goal first half to edge visiting Barrington 2-1 in a non-conference match. Camden Kowalski and Paul Yoo scored goals for the Mustangs, while Junior Hernandez had the lone goal for the Broncos.Next up for Mundelein (7-3-1) is a pair of home games in the North Suburban Conference against Stevenson (8-2-1) on Tuesday and Libertyville (10-0) on Thursday.Mundelein lost to Larkin on the road last Monday, before tying 12-game-winner Zion-Benton (12-3-2) in NSC action on Thursday night."We performed very well against Larkin and Zion-Benton, but the bats went dry," Mundelein coach Ernie Billittier said. "The results were frustrating, but the effort was fine."Mundelein generated ample scoring opportunities against Barrington (9-5-2). The Mustangs hit three posts and had other chances near the net that they couldn't finish."I was happy that we put a couple away in this one," Billittier said. "We left a few goals on the field too, and you can't let a good team like Barrington stay that close late in the game."It might not be the last time the Mustangs see the Broncos this season. The seeding meeting is in a couple of weeks."We seem to cross paths with Barrington if we get out of the regional," Billittier said. "Obviously, our biggest concern isn't that. Stevenson is playing very well, and that's the next step."Kowalski scored the opening goal against Barrington, finishing a pass from Darren Gray in the 14th minute. Yoo flicked a header into the net in the 28th minute off an Armando Rosiles free kick from outside the box."As a team, we're all pushing up," said Rosiles, who has 5 assists this season. "We've been working hard in practices and in warmups, practicing plays."Barrington cut its deficit in half when Hernandez finished a shot that was set up by Aidan Lew in the 50th minute."Mundelein has been consistently getting far in the playoffs, and it was good for us to look at where we're at," said Barrington assistant coach Caleb Copeland, who filled in for head coach Scott Steib, who missed the game after receiving a red card against Hersey. "Sometimes these are some of the games you need out of the conference. You can see the big picture. Getting a one goal back after being down by two goals at the half is not a win for us, but it at least gives us a little of momentum knowing we can put one in when we're down."
