Mundelein Theatre to present Les Misérables
Known as one of the most famous musicals in the world, Les Misérables has been seen by more than 65 million people throughout the world, having been translated into countless languages. It is an epic tale that has some of the most iconic music ever created in the history of musical theatre. The students at Mundelein Theatre are taking on the challenge of this show this spring. The show runs April 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., and April 28 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.  Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $7 for students, children and seniors. And new for Mundelein Theatre, tickets can now be purchased online at www.mundeleintheatre.org.  Tickets can also be purchased at the door 45 minutes prior to curtain for each performance.

Les Misérables is a sung-through musical [very little spoken dialog] based on a novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Premiering in Paris in 1980, it has music by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boubil. Set in early 19th century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew, but is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists make their last stand at a street barricade.

“We will be performing the School Edition of the show,” said Jonathan Meier, the director of Les Mis. “It is quite similar to the original version. There are no characters or songs cut, but many of the original songs have been shortened or consolidated. Some of the songs have been arranged into different keys which make it more singable for high school voices,” continued Meier. Seniors Dominic Cappuccilli (Valjean) and Dan Haller (Javert) have been working very closely together during the rehearsal process.

“The word iconic keeps coming up when we discuss the show and the music,” said Cappuccilli. “I suppose that is a bit intimidating, but at the end of the day, we have to make the songs and the characters our own.” Haller continued, “We know that these are very famous songs and famous characters, and we certainly want to honor that and meet people’s expectations, but we have been working really hard with Mr. Meier to break through some of the cliché’s related to the story and come up with some characterizations that are fresh and surprising.”

Other seniors in principal roles are Bella Canela (Fantine), Ryan Story (Thenardier), and Robbie Iraburo-Cochran (Enjolras). Juniors Sydney Litka (Madame Thenardier) and Rachel Larson (Eponine), and freshman Emma Cappuccilli (Cosette) and Matthew Callas (Marius) round out the principal cast. Portraying Little Cosette are Juni Head and Emma Thompson. Nayan Gupta and Ben Miller play Gavroche.  The ensemble consists of Abby Smith, Alexis Lee, Allan Rodriguez, Ander Nutall, Annalise Welsch, Brenda Olayo, Brianna Moderhack, Colin Nacion, Dean Hanson, Derek Lee, Elias Photopoulos, Ellie Mellen, Emily Saunders, Ginny Zundel, Giselle Gil, Halli Carpender, Jenifer Martinez, Josh Fergen, Joshua Saunders, Josie Hutson, Joslyn Gange, Katie Staroszczyk, Kimberly Barr, Laryaaz Lazaro, Luke Fuller, Mackenzie Haith, Mary McMurray, Megan Saunders, Mikalya Gruber, Mira Guiritan, Miriam Mitry, Nikki Wegner, Paige Steiner, Sierra Bouchard, Sophia Riportella and Steven Weiss. The children’s ensemble is made up of Ava Thompson, Grace Gorman, Avery Friend, Jadyn Marder, Dalton Winters, Julia Chalifoux, Diego Chapa, Nicholas Chalifoux, Ellie Chevrier, Oliva Sharp, Faith Healy and Shannon Ouimet. The Production Stage Manager is Maddie Martorana.

Mustang Golf Scramble set for Tuesday, June 12; win a car or Super Bowl tickets
The Mundelein Mustangs Football program will host the 2018 Mustang Golf Scramble on Tuesday, June 12, with a 1 p.m. tee off at Steeple Chase Golf Club. This is a fundraising event for the football program with a portion of the proceeds going to the Positive Coaching Alliance of the Greater Chicago Area.

“We’re excited about making The Mustang Golf Outing an annual, marquee event. It will be a great time, and something that our school and community look forward to each year,” said Larry Calhoun, varsity football head coach. “The response so far has been outstanding, but there are still lots of opportunities to get involved as a participant or a sponsor.”

Highlights of the Golf Scramble include 18 holes with a GPS Cart, on-course contests [hole in one wins a 2018 Mustang convertible or two tickets to Super Bowl LIII]; an on-site dinner, awards, raffle items and a silent auction. Sponsorships are available.

The registration fees are $140 per player; $500 per foursome; and $35 for dinner only. Those who reserve their spots before May 1 will pay $125 per player and $450 per foursome.
Registration is now open. For complete details, visit: https://www.planmygolfevent.com/31333-MustangScramble/

“This year, the proceeds from the Mustang golf outing will be used to defer costs for underprivileged players, purchase new equipment to help ensure our student-athletes have the best and safest equipment available, offset the costs of summer camps and other opportunities for our athletes to participate in area and college-hosted events, provide team gear and help meet athletes’ nutritional needs, and generally enrich the experience for our Mustang football players,” Calhoun explained. “Finally, a portion of the proceeds will go to help support the Chicago Area Positive Coaching Alliance [PCA].  As a partner with PCA, the mission is to transform the culture of high school and youth sports so that all athletes can have a positive, character-building experience,” he concluded.

Boys Volleyball
Mundelein, which finished 19th by defeating Grant, 25-11, 25-17, helped longtime coach George Dressen get his 500th career win with a victory over Hoffman Estates earlier on Saturday.
"I would like to thank all of my assistant coaches over the years for the hard work they put in the development of so many fine athletes, and the administration, teachers and staff for the many years of support they have given me and the volleyball program at Mundelein.

"I would also like to thank all of the players for working so well together over the years. They have become family. I am very proud to be a Mustang."

For Mundelein, Marc Rey and Abram Nazario had 22 kills apiece over the tournament while Steven Mintello had 66 assists.

It could be a motivational or inspirational video, or simply a quick chat from head coach Mike Vukovics. Whatever it is, it's a team thing -- and it's working. "We're even trying some meditation next week," the second-year coach said after his Mundelein girls water polo team put the finishing touches on crosstown rival Libertyville 15-5 on Thursday evening in North Suburban Conference action in Mundelein. "The girls are really buying into the team-first aspect. If we have the right mindset going into a game or competition, it helps inspire us and gets us ready to compete."Senior attacker and George Washington University commit Abbie Lukas has certainly witnessed first-hand the change in culture during her standout career."I saw everyone starting to come together from my freshman to sophomore year and it's kept building," said Lukas, after leading the way with 8 goals against the Cats. "And now, it's amazing how close we are and that it's a team with everyone contributing."Lukas and her running mate, junior attacker Ella Krauss, got Mundelein (8-5, 1-0) going early as both had hat tricks in the first period.Senior attacker/defender Amanda Garcia and freshman utility Adry Kasemets added single goals as Mundelein jumped ahead 8-0 after the opening period. Krauss regularly scores, but her defense perhaps stands out the most. "She's been huge defensively for us," noted Vukovics of Krauss, who ended up scoring another goal in the second, but more importantly held Libertyville leading scorer Anna Heard without a goal. Krauss also dished out 7 assists to accompany 5 steals. "When her and Abbie are both on, we're tough to beat," Vukovics said. Besides the lone goal by Krauss, Lukas poured in 5 more second-quarter scores to help build a 14-2 halftime cushion.

Boys Gymnastics
With four of the top boys gymnastics teams in the state competing, the Bob Bohl Invitational saw some high scoring Friday night at Mundelein.

And with a strong performance from start to finish, the host Mustangs held off Wheaton co-op 158.625 to 157.125 as both squads scored season-high totals in the powerful 19-team field. Mundelein was led by third-place all-arounder Kurt Lawrence (54 points) followed by Schaumburg freshman Oscar Kulesza (53.75) in fourth and Mundelein senior Tyler Collins (53.375) in fifth. Glenbard East's Marc Le (52.1) placed eighth overall. Mundelein junior Will Ferro (51.15) finished 10th in the all-around. He's proved to be a huge cog in the Mundelein lineup as the Mustangs recently found out that they will be hosting the first of five sectionals when the state series rolls around.

"Tonight we got the big scores where we needed, and it worked out for the best," said Ferro, who qualified for state on pommel horse and high bar last year. "I think that we are all starting to clean up our routines and get the polish on them that we need to compete with the top teams in the state."
Mundelein coach Jesse Piland is also very optimistic after the Mustangs' superb performance.

"This was by far our best team effort," Piland said. "Everybody pitched in, and we needed everybody to do their best to compete with some of the high level teams in the gym.

Boy Water Polo
Daily Herald:While the Mustangs have prided themselves on defense so far this season, it was the offense that got rolling early and often during a 19-1 victory over the Blue Devils in North Suburban Conference action on Tuesday evening in Mundelein. "Our counter-attack was there at the beginning," added Gates, whose team improved to 1-1 in the NSC and 6-9 overall. "We're starting to put things together. We just need that light switch to go off more often for our offense." No problem with that on Tuesday. Junior attacker Jake Garcia got the scoring started with 2 first-quarter goals, including the second on a feed from Hunter Magee that helped produce a 6-0 lead after the opening 7 minutes of action. Single goals were also scored in the first by Eubin Kim, Ryan Zentz, and

Mundelein's leading scorer, freshman attacker Danny Oleinik. "We're getting more consistent and it was important to get off to a fast start tonight," said Oleinik, who ended up with 4 goals on the evening. "Our sense of urgency is there and we're trying to play how we practice." Garcia led the Mustangs on Tuesday with 5 goals, while Magee and Zentz finished with 2 apiece as 10 players scored. Garcia also collected 4 steals along with senior Jack Frane. Magee also dished out 5 assists and Stanley stopped 11 Devil shots on the evening. Meanwhile, the pieces are falling into place for Warren, only in its second year as a program.

"The kids know how to play and are like sponges when it comes to learning," said Devils second-year coach Brian Esposito, whose guys fell to 2-12 overall and 0-2 in the NSC. "We were happy with how we played tonight, especially against a good team like Mundelein." With a man-up situation early in the second, Warren put together a beautiful drive that featured several passes before Austin Cortes finished the possession by blasting one past Stanley for the Devils' lone goal just 28 seconds into the frame. "That was huge for us. He (Cortes) also did an excellent job on defense holding Mundelein at bay, and did a nice along with (Jeremy Gunter) in executing the offense," noted Esposito. "Overall, these guys' game sense is incredible for only playing a short time." With starting keeper Riley Nebel out ill, Jomil Duka (3 saves) and Peter Mikolitis (2 saves) each played a half in goal.
