Recognition

MHS senior earns President’s Volunteer Service Award
Tyler Collins, a Mundelein High School senior, has been honored for his volunteer service with a
President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. MHS officials nominated Collins for national honors this fall in recognition of his volunteer service.

During his career at MHS Collins has been involved in band, the Chess Team, Future Business Leaders of America [FBLA], Helping Heroes of America, Math Team, Gymnastics, National Honor Society, Student Athlete Leadership Training [SALT] and gymnastics. Outside of school he is a volunteer working with veterans at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Healthcare Center in North Chicago, he is a coach in the Special Olympics program and volunteers at the Gymnastic Spot in Mundelein.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community,” he said.

MHS to debut El Baile Latin Dance March 17; workshops March 6, 7
Mundelein High School’s Puertas Latin Culture Club and the Student Leadership Organization will host El Baile, Mundelein’s first Latin Dance Saturday, March 17 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Main Gym. Tickets are on sale beginning Thursday, March 1 in the MHS Bookstore for $5. The dance will feature various types of Latin music such as Cumbia, Bachata, Banda and others.

To help those not familiar with Latin Dance, two workshops will be held to give instruction in the basic steps to these dances. The free workshops will take place Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. “Students may attend one or both of the workshops but neither is required. It is an option for students to learn or practice basic steps so they feel more confident dancing at the actual dance,” said Laura Garcia, co-sponsor of the event.

“The purpose of this dance is to celebrate Latin culture, to give students who are less involved a feeling of connection at school and for students who are unfamiliar with Latin culture to help broaden their horizons and hopefully build more empathy across cultures,” said Carsyn Rodriguez, co-sponsor. “Also – dancing is fun!”

“This dance is open to all students. We hope to help bridge the gap between our Latino and non-Latino students and this is a great event that all students can get involved with,” Garcia concluded.

Band
On Saturday, March 10th, Mundelein High School will host the 53rd Annual Mundelein Invitational.  26 bands will perform throughout the day.  Here is the schedule of performances.  We hope to see you then.  Admission for the event is $5.

Black Student Union
Black Student Union was visited by Ms. Nell Rice (owner of Debbie's Floral), and Mr. Michael Darling (local Farmers insurance agent).  The students learned about job opportunities at both of these businesses, which may be available immediately for interested students, and possibly through the summer.

Spring Testing
Please note, MHS will host spring testing on April 10, 2018.  11th grade students will take the SAT and 10th grade students will take the PSAT.  9th and 12th grade students will not have school on this day.

From the Nurse’s office to all parents of 11th graders,
We ask that you provide proof of your student receiving the second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine as soon as possible unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16 years of age is required.  We highly recommend that this vaccine requirement be completed and medical proof be turned into the nursing office before the last day of their 11th grade. Families that wait too long for their student to receive this requirement by the first day of the school year for 2018-2019 will put their student at risk being excluded from school until this requirement has been met. Supplies of this vaccine runs low or out closer to the deadline, so please take steps to have this done as soon as possible.  We thank you very much for your cooperation.

Shout out
Congratulations to senior Ben Holly who received a scholarship this past fall towards his first year of college.  Last spring he completed the application for the Triple Impact Competitor Scholarship from Positive Coaching Alliance of Chicago.  In the fall he was notified that he was a finalist and he was invited to attend their Triple Impact Competitor Scholarship banquet at the Chicago Sports Museum downtown in Water Tower Place next to Harry Caray's.  It was such a well-run and encouraging event for the young athletes who were honored for the ways they try to make themselves better, try to build up their teammates, and try to make the game better.  There were a number of inspirational speakers including Melissa Stockwell, a Paralympian and Nelson Rodriguez, general manager of the Chicago Fire.  While five student athletes were given slightly larger scholarships, all of the student finalists received a monetary scholarship toward their college careers.  Ben will use his at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin where he has committed to playing baseball for the Pioneers. Ben’s parents were impressed by the positive message that this organization is striving to spread among young athletes.  We encourage any junior athlete at Mundelein to apply not just for the scholarship opportunity but also for the uplifting experience of the event.
