Illinois Youth Survey
On March 13th, 2018 sophomores and seniors will be given the opportunity to participate in the 2017-2018 Illinois Youth Survey (IYS).  The purpose of the IYS is to better understand youth attitudes and behaviors that can impact student problems and academic success. The survey will ask about topics including nutrition, physical activity, bullying, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. Students will be asked to complete a survey (with no names or identification numbers) that will be confidentially administered during one class period (third period). The survey is completely voluntary and privacy will be strictly protected.  Students will complete the survey by using their Chromebooks; please make sure your student has their Chromebook ready to complete the survey.  If you do not want your student to participate in the survey, please review and complete the attached “Parent Opt-Out,” letter.  Contact Mr. Thatcher, Dean of Students, for further questions at 847-949-2200 ext. 1254.

Puertas and Student Leadership present El Baile
On Saturday, March 17th, Puertas, with the help of Student Leadership, will debut El Baile, Mundelein's first Latin Dance. This dance will feature various types of Latin music such as Cumbia, Bachata, Banda, and more! The purpose of this dance is to celebrate Latin culture, give students a feeling of connection at school, and for students who are unfamiliar with Latin culture, to broaden their horizons and hopefully bridge the gap between our Latino and non-Latino students and build more empathy across cultures. Also--dancing is fun!

As a way to gain more student participation with this dance and to give students who are unfamiliar with this type of music the opportunity to learn, Puertas hosted two free workshops this week to teach the basic steps to these dances. The after-school workshops were a huge success with about 60 students coming over two days to learn and practice dances like Bachata, Cumbia, Merengue, Caballo Dorado, and more. Students left these workshops feeling more confident in their dancing and much more excited for the upcoming dance.
Tickets are currently on sale at the bookstore for $5. The last day to purchase tickets is Friday, March 16th, as tickets will NOT be sold at the door. Dress for this dance is casual (jeans, spring dresses, etc.) and students can bring a guest if they fill out a guest form, which is available at the Dean's office.
Once again, this dance is open to ALL students so please encourage students to come out to El Baile on March 17th! They won’t want to miss out on this night of dancing and fun!

Public performances of Group Interpretation set for prior to competition
Mundelein Theatre will have two public performances of their Group Interpretation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower prior to their IHSA sectional competition at Lake Park High School on Saturday, March 17. Performances at MHS will take place Thursday and Friday, March 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Mark Landuyt directs.

Group lnterp is a 30 minute, student-led performance of any literary work. The focal point of the performance is "out" to the audience with limited on-stage focus. The performance is minimal in nature, meaning that performers wear a uniform dress (not costumes) and build a minimalistic set. Sound effects are permitted but no lighting, specific costuming, properties or theater makeup can be used. It is an IHSA sanctioned event where schools compete against other schools with a chance to earn the opportunity to compete at a State Final tournament.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows observant Charlie as he charts a course through the strange world between adolescence and adulthood,  first dates, family drama, and new friends. Devastating loss, young love, and life on the fringe consume Charlie as well as the people around him. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it, Charlie must learn to navigate those wild and at times overwhelming aspects of growing up.

Schools that advance to the state competition will perform March 23-24 at the Peoria Civic Center.

MHS seeks nominations for Distinguished Alumni award
After a successful first Distinguished Alumni Award Banquet in November, Mundelein High School
is now seeking nominations for alumni to honor for 2018. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6 which is also Homecoming Weekend for Mundelein High School. Nominations will be accepted from March 2 through May 13.

Those to be nominated must be out of high school for at least 10 years and have distinguished themselves in any number of areas such as career paths, military service, government work, medicine, the arts, etc. and also volunteer work and/or philanthropic endeavors.

Anyone may nominate an MHS graduate for the award; however, an email address for the nominee is required. In addition, graduates may nominate themselves and graduates who are deceased also may be nominated.

“Mundelein High School graduates have consistently shown that they take their MHS education and use that to do good in the world in many different ways,” said Kevin Myers, MHS District 120 Superintendent.. “We are very proud of our alumni and we enjoy using this awards banquet as a way to recognize them for what they are doing,” he said.

To nominate an MHS graduate for the award, visit the MHS website at www.d120.org, look
under  “MHS Community” and select “Alumni.”

“This is a great opportunity to recognize Mundelein High School alumni who are making significant contributions to society and their communities,” said Ron Girard, public information officer and chairman of the Distinguished Alumni Award committee. “It’s a special evening to recognize graduates who showcase how they used their Mundelein High School education to excel and to make a difference.”

From the Nurse’s office to all parents of 11th graders
We ask that you provide proof of your student receiving the second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine as soon as possible unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16 years of age is required.  We highly recommend that this vaccine requirement be completed and medical proof be turned into the nursing office before the last day of their 11th grade. Families that wait too long for their student to receive this requirement by the first day of the school year for 2018-2019 will put their student at risk being excluded from school until this requirement has been met. Supplies of this vaccine runs low or out closer to the deadline, so please take steps to have this done as soon as possible.  We thank you very much for your cooperation.
