Mustang News - September 29, 2017

September 15 to October 15 is designated as National Hispanic Heritage Month.  MHS clubs and activities are showcasing historical achievements of different Latino communities throughout this time.  Here are five suggestions from the U.S. Department of Education on celebrating the culture and history while enriching your children’s understanding of the Hispanic community

History and Social Studies
1.  Find out about Hispanic historical and cultural legacies: The U.S. government started National Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988 to honor Hispanic Americans and their history.

2.  Discover Hispanic leaders and landmarks: Ask your kids if they can think of any Hispanic historical figures, leaders like Miguel Antonio Otero, or landmarks.

Reading
3.  Read up on Hispanic culture: Take your kids on an adventure to your local library and read books on Hispanic culture. Ask them what parts of Hispanic culture they like the most to enhance an appreciation for the fun history of Hispanic traditions.

4.  Make a family storybook: National Hispanic Heritage Month also can be an occasion to celebrate your own family’s history. Using some paper and coloring supplies, help your kids make a family storybook showing the history of their relatives.

Get Moving
5.  Dance to Hispanic music: Spark interest in Latin music by getting active and dancing to some Hispanic tunes. Expose your kids to everything from Latin jazz to salsa, and use this opportunity to get moving.

"National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins Sept. 15, celebrates U.S. Latinos, their culture and their history. Started in 1968 by Congress as Hispanic Heritage Week, it was expanded to a month in 1988. The celebration begins in the middle rather than the start of September because it coincides with national independence days in several Latin American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica." Upcoming Visits and Events at MHS

FAFSA Opens Sunday, October 1

Free financial aid workshops begin Oct. 2 across Lake County
For the tenth consecutive year, University Center of Lake County has collaborated with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and multiple partners across Lake County to organize a series of workshops at which students and families can electronically submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The 2017-18 series will begin on October 2.  These workshops are held in the computer labs of high schools, colleges, libraries, and nonprofit organizations. Volunteers trained by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission are available to provide assistance; at least one volunteer at each site speaks Spanish.

The FAFSA is required to access any federal student aid and to access the State of Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) funds.  Many colleges and universities also rely on FAFSA data to determine eligibility for the institution’s own financial aid funds. Students seeking financial aid to attend college from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

High school seniors and their families, current college students, and adults planning a return to school will be welcome at any of these sessions.  It does not matter which college the student plans to attend.
Students should bring the following documents with them: a copy of 2016 Federal Tax information (parent and student 1040EZ, 1040A or 1040 and all W2 forms), recent bank statements, the student’s driver’s license and Social Security card or Student Alien Registration card if the student is not a U.S. citizen.

Oct. 17, 2017, Mundelein High School, 5 – 8 pm

To RSVP for any of these sessions or to download a flyer with the dates and locations, visit http://ucenter.org/current-students/financial-aid/

New this year will be two winter workshops (“What Comes Next After FAFSA?”) to assist students who have submitted their FAFSA in understanding their results and in taking the next steps to ensure that their intended colleges have received all the necessary data.

“What Comes Next After FAFSA?” sessions
Jan. 24, 2018, University Center of Lake County, 6 – 8 pm
Feb. 10, 2018, University Center of Lake County, 9 – 11 am

The workshops are being sponsored by the University Center of Lake County, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the College of Lake County, TRIO Educational Opportunity Centers, YouthBuild Lake County, Lake County Regional Office of Education, Lake County High School Technology Center, Mundelein High School, Round Lake High School, Round Lake Area Public Library, Wauconda Area Public Library, Waukegan High School, Cristo Rey St. Martin de Porres College Prep, Zion-Benton Township High School, North Chicago Community High School, and Highland Park High School, with support from North Shore Gas.

Athletics

Boys Cross Country
It is indeed a great day to be a Mustang! Despite the timing difficulties, Palatine put on a class meet, as always. Overall, we performed very well, and in places, brilliantly.
In the freshman race, Elian Salgado took 10th, with 3 more runners finishing in roughly the top 30 places. Team wise, we won't know for sure for a bit, but we were probably in the top 6 teams- for the 3rd year in a row!!!!

In the sophomore race, we took 13th, with Trevor Werner continuing his comeback from injury, and taking 21st.

In the varsity race, what can I say- in brutal heat, the boys fought through and took 2nd out of over 30 teams. They were the top Illinois team, trailing only St. Xavier from Louisville, who is ranked in the top 10 in the nation.

The top 5 of Robert St. Clair, Mikey Parduhn, Aidan Afonso, Dillon Blake, and Carl Schoenfield finished between 21st and 43rd place, with a ridiculous spread of only 15.5 seconds.

What a great performance! Our Mustangs demonstrated true toughness in brutal conditions, and I couldn't be prouder of ALL our Mustangs. We really came through at all levels. On to Peoria!!!
