National Honor Society
MHS National Honor Society members have been dedicating their time improving our school and the community. The attached pictures are a small sample of the things they have been involved in. Taping MHS stairs for students with vision impairment, cleaning courtyards, making lunches for the local PADS system, and setting up for evening school events, to name a few.
Michael del Rosario took it upon himself, while the maintenance staff was attending to other tasks, to prepare the cafeteria for a community meeting. His decision helped them stay on schedule for the event. Remarkable.
Lead by Sanika Bijawat and Michael del Rosario, this is a very impressive group of young people. Our young people deserve credit for making a difference.

Young Adult author to spend April 10 with MHS students
Erin Jade Lange |
writing workshop, titled Writing With Voice, from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.
Lange is the author of contemporary young adult novels Butter, Dead Ends and Rebel Bully Geek Pariah. She writes “facts by day and fiction by night.” As a journalist, she is inspired by current events and real-world issues and uses her writing to explore how those issues impact teenagers.
As an only child, Lange spent a lot of time entertaining herself as a kid. This required her to “rely heavily on my own imagination” which may have influenced her to become a writer.
Lange grew up in northern Illinois along the Mississippi River. She now lives in Arizona and admits to being torn between her love of rivers and her love of the desert.
The event is being coordinated by Rebecca Plaza, MHS librarian, and Diane Covert, English department chair.
NHS to conduct MHS Miracle Minute to raise funds
Mundelein High School’s National Honor Society will conduct its second annual MHS Miracle Minute Friday, April 7, from 9:20 to 9:50 a.m. to fundraise for a campaign called Pennies for Patients. This organization raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For one minute during homeroom, students will be asked to donate any spare change they have and put it in a designated jar in their homeroom. Whichever homeroom raises the most money within that minute will receive doughnuts that same day.
“Help us beat our total of $1,400 from last year!,” said McKenzie Theis, NHS president.

Athletics
Boys Volleyball
Varsity team competed at Hoffman Estates defeating West Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Bartlett & Palatine for a 2nd place finish in the tournament. A great finish compared to last year, the team played so well together. Coach Dressen is very proud of his team and what they accomplished!
Boys Track
It's another great week to be a Mustang! Friday night, 3/24/17, our track athletes competed at the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet in Bloomington. This meet is by invitation, only the top performers in the State in each event are invited.
The meet started for us with sophomore Robert St. Clair in the 3200. Robert ran the fastest opening mile ever for him, 4:44.9, enroute to a fine time of 9:46.86, and good for 12th place.
Next senior Sal Roman competed in the 60m HH, a rare distance for us ...to compete at. Sal beat his seeded place by running 8.91 and taking 20th place overall. He was followed by junior Bobby Nuzzo in the 60m Dash. Bobby narrowly missed making the finals, running 7.05 and taking 9th overall. Bobby came back later in the meet to also take 9th in the 200m, running 23.14.
The other 2 events we competed in were medal winners.
A great coda to the indoor season- way to go Mustangs!
GirlsTrack
Over the weekend the girls fared well at the Wheeling Pentathlon., a track competition which consists of 5 events- the 55 hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800 meter run. Overall Kalli Majewski took 6th, with Ryann Ray and Jessica Reisman taking 15th and 16th out of 27 athletes. Individually Kalli took 6th in the shot put, 5th in the long jump and 2nd in the 800. Ryann took 2nd in the high jump, clearing 5' for the first time.
Sophomore Khari Thompkins had a huge PR in the 400! We set 3 primary goals for Khari in this race, and one secondary goal. She achieved them all in taking 7th place after being seeded 18th. Khari- 1. Beat the LF runner (Done!). 2. Win her heat (Done!). 3. Break the indoor school record (59.70 to 60.48). The 4th goal was to break 60- nuff said! Khari's time puts her less than .5 seconds away from the outdoor State Qualifying time!
Girls Water Polo
The girls’ polo team finished 3rd at the Maine south tournament.
Lukas with 23 goals & 7 assists, Westgate led defense with 12 steals. Other scorers were Peterson, Parker, Whelan, Krauss, Rodriguez, Bradshaw, & Goodson. Stanley had 17 saves.
Winter Guard
Winter guard earned 6th place at Championships this weekend with a score of 68. (less than 1 point away from 5th place) It was a tougher season against a lot of competitive teams. Our group pulled through and gave this last performance the best run yet!
Thank you for all of your support throughout this season! We couldn't have done it without you!
Softball
Despite some rain I thought we grew as a team on our adventure to Marion, IL. We went 0-3 on the trip but did play some great competition down there. We enjoyed the team bonding and funny bus ride moments. As a team we went to ‘Beauty and the Beast’, which was such a great movie and enjoyable experience. Each morning after our team breakfast we practiced at Carterville High School (3/28-3/30). Carterville was very accommodating to us and offered their entire facility to us as we practiced. It was very nice to see our baseball team down there competing at Benton while we were there. Athletic Director Troy Parola made the trip down and we enjoyed seeing him and having his support to our athletic teams. After playing three games, our trip ended early as we were cancelled with Harrisburg due to rain.
Baseball
Varsity traveled down to Southern Illinois for spring break games in what we all thought would be great weather. It was a successful outing for the Mustangs as they left the rainy parts of southern behind them coming home undefeated. Mustangs beat Carbondale (9-1), Grant (9-3) and rival New Trier (10-0). The Mustangs begin conference play this week.
"How fast was that?" As scouts watch Murphy's 94 MPH pitch. |
Boys Lacrosse
Varsity team came in 2nd last week at the Hoffman Estates tournament. They had wins against: Geneva (B Division State Champs last year), Hoffman Estates, and Bartlett. Their only loss was a 2 point loss to Schaumburg.
