Junior Henry Deap selected for NIH-sponsored CURE cancer research program
Henry Deap
MHS junior Henry Deap is one of only six Chicago-area students selected for the CURE summer cancer research program at the University of Chicago. Deap will conduct research alongside faculty mentors who are University of Chicago scientists, physicians, and physician-scientists who have established research programs at the University. The program is funded by the National Cancer Institute and private donors.

Deap is excited about the opportunities the program will bring. “I’m looking to build that foundation with the hands-on projects that will be introduced and to meet the professors and mentors.”
During the eight-week summer program, students will follow their research interests as they develop a deeper understanding of the field. Some might explore the molecular and cellular events that cause cancer, some want to address medical imaging tool application, and others prefer to work on bioinformatics - the analysis and interpretation of genomic and other large-scale data to better understand cancer causes, risk and outcomes. Educational programs, skills-building and career workshops are part of the program which culminates in a symposium showcasing the students’ research.

“Our students complete projects related to areas at the forefront of cancer research:  cancer immunology, pharmacogenomics of anticancer agents, bioengineering, experimental cancer therapeutics, cancer disparities and more,” said Megan Mekinda, PhD, assistant director for cancer education at the University of Chicago. “About half of our second-year students choose to return to the same lab to deepen their level of expertise in a particular area. The other half elects to join a lab specializing in a different area of research to broaden their knowledge and skill,” Mekinda explained.
Deap is the first MHS student to be accepted into this competitive two-year program. Last summer Mayela Correa, MHS senior, attended a sister program, ResearcHStarts, and conducted research that examined certain aspects of obesity, a possible cancer cause.

ACT thank you to MHS
MHS has been administering the ACT since 2003-2004. Over this time, approximately 22,258 students have tested at your center.

For the December 10, 2016 test date, about 417 students registered, with currently at least 394 students with reportable scores. Of those who tested, 14% of students come from the underserved learners population.

Additionally, test results have already been sent to 160 colleges and universities across 33 different states.

Please extend our thanks and share this important information with those on your testing staff and anyone else on your team who supported you.

Activities

Class Rank Information Session
Mundelein High School Administration has recommended to the District 120 Board of Education that Class Rank be dropped. MHS hopes to join most other schools in the area to eliminate Class Rank. This will not affect current students, but would begin with the Class of 2021. An information session will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 6:00pm in the MHS Cafeteria. Learn about the benefits of eliminating class rank, and how this will affect students entering MHS in August 2017. The Board is expected to decide at the April 18 meeting.

Mundelein Theatre to present Group Interpretation piece, Stranger Than Fiction
Mundelein Theatre will present the Group Interpretation production of Stranger than Fiction by Zach Helm Thursday, March 16 and Friday, March 17 beginning at 7 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.

Group Interpretation is a 30-minute, student-led performance of any literary work. The focal point of the performance is “out” to the audience with limited on-stage focus. The performance is minimal in nature, meaning that performers wear a uniform dress (not costumes) and build a minimalistic set. Sound effects are permitted but no lighting, specific costuming, properties or theater makeup can be used. Group Interpretation is an IHSA-sanctioned event where schools compete against other schools with a chance to earn the opportunity to compete at a State Final tournament. Mundelein will perform in sectional competition Sunday, March 19 at Lake Park High School. If they qualify for state competition, that will take place in April.

Stranger than Fiction is about Harold Crick, a lonely IRS agent whose mundane existence is transformed when he hears a mysterious voice narrating his life. With the help of Professor Jules Hilbert, Harold discovers he's the main character in a novel-in-progress and that the voice belongs to Karen Eiffel, an eccentric author famous for killing her main characters in creative ways. Harold must quickly track down Eiffel and stop her before she conjures up a way to finish him off.
English Instructor Mark Landuyt is the Group Interpretation Director with Josie Hutson as Assistant Director. Cast members include Joey Salit, Katie Staroszczyk, Natalie Williams, Henry Dumblauskas, Jenna Panos, Ashley Carrier, Jake Cumberland, Anooha Dasari, Allan Rodriguez, Abby Smith and George Stedman.
