Back to the Future - MHS Redefines Logo

For 30-some years the school logo was a Mustang who was looking back over its shoulder while rearing up. At some point, different groups, organizations and teams started to create their own logos which changed the identity of the school. No one knew which logo represented MHS anymore. This year, the administration conducted a survey of students, staff, parents and community members about the idea of creating a new logo that would consistently be used on all MHS clothing, uniforms, documents, etc. The overwhelming message from the survey was not to create a new logo but to go back to TRADITIONS of the unified horse logo and the “M.”

With the work of an administrative committee and the assistance of a professional designer, we are now launching what we expect to be a long-lasting “new” traditional look for Mundelein High School. These are the only symbols that will be used in the future to represent MHS. They include modernized versions of the traditional “M,” the horse rearing up and looking over its shoulder, the head of the horse separately to show its fierceness and a horse inside a shield which can be used alone in many different situations or with graphics to be used as letterhead, business cards, etc.

“We listened to the survey feedback about respect for our traditions and history and appreciate the words of those who walked the halls before us,” Superintendent Kevin Myers explained. “We are looking forward to seeing our new logo everywhere from uniforms to book bags to window decals on cars, etc. From this point on, these symbols will tell the world that we are the Mundelein Mustangs.”

All logos will be available in combinations of red, white and gray.

History of school shield explained
For 45 years, the MHS shield [sometimes called seal or crest] was the same one that was originally designed when the school opened in 1961. In 2005 and again in 2008, the shield was changed. Based on the discussion of the tradition of the logo, the administration has decided to return to the tradition of the original shield.  What is pictured here is what will be used as the school shield—the only change was to add the letters “EST.” before 1961 which means that’s when the school and shield were established.

Announcements

Special guests to join the stage for Thoroughly Modern Millie at MHS
The year was 1922, the height of the Jazz Age. Modern women were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love. Mundelein High School Theatre is bringing this fun-filled era to life this spring with their production of the Tony Award-winning musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie. The show runs April 28 and 29 at 7 p.m. and April 30 at 2 and 7 p.m.  Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students, children and seniors. Tickets can be reserved www.mhstheatre.net or purchased at the door 45 minutes prior to curtain for each performance.

As an added treat, there will be a special guest performer for each production.  On Thursday, Social Studies teacher Susan Theotokatos will be joining the cast. On Friday, Coach Larry Calhoun will be onstage.  Saturday afternoon will find Dr. Anthony Kroll, principal, trodding the boards of MHS. And at the final performance Saturday night, Dr. Kevin Myers, District 120 Superintendent, will join the cast for the final run of the show.

Based on the 1967 Academy Award –winning film, the musical written by Jeanine Tesori (Shrek the Musical, Fun Home), Dick Scanlon and Richard Morris, debuted on Broadway in 2002 and ran for more than 900 performances. It is the story of a small town girl, Millie Dilmount, who leaves home for New York City to marry for money instead of love. She soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a white slavery ring in China.

“This show has something for everyone,” said Jonathan Meier, the show’s director. “It has a wonderful message about life and love, with lot of laughs, great music, jazzy dance numbers and lots of tap dancing. I don’t think I know anyone who does not love this show.”
Senior Josie David portrays the title character. “I can’t think of a better way to end my high school career than getting to play Millie,” said David. “It is a dream role for those who love doing musical theatre.”  Sophomore Dominic Cappuccilli portrays Jimmie Smith, Millie’s love interest. “The show is extremely high energy and rehearsals have been pretty taxing, but also lots of fun,” Cappuccilli explained.

Others in the cast of Millie are Patty Roques (Mrs. Meers), Angela Peterson (Miss Dorothy Brown), Thomas Ferro (Trevor Graydon), Payton Cousins (Muzzy), Oscar Delgado (Ching Ho), Brenden Paul (Bun Foo), Elise Campbell (Miss Flannery), Kaila Saunders (Ruth), Kiley Hernandez (Gloria), Bella Canella (Alice), Marisa Nuzzo (Cora), Annie McGrath (Lucille), and Emily Parduhn (Ethel Peas). Ensemble members are Robbie Iraburo-Cochran, George Stedman, Joshua Saunders, Ginny Zundel, Rygar Carvajal, Maddie Martorana, Sydney Litka, Chinedu Ebube, Halli Carpender, Kimberly Barr, Brianna Moderhack, Emily Saunders, Ryan Story, Hannah Weiss, Mackenzie Haith, Rachel Larson, Abby Smith, Jordan Jurasik and Mitchell Cohen.  Jenna Panos is the Production Stage Manager and Alex Frumkin is the Assistant Director.
