MHS senior earns silver medal award in national competitionMundelein High School senior, Douglas Alberts, has earned a silver medal in the art portfolio category of The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
National Medalists represent less than one percent of submissions to the 2016 Scholastic Awards. This year, students submitted nearly 320,000 works of art and writing. Only 2,400 medals were awarded at the national level.
The award-winner’s work involved eight 60-second short films that combine graphic design with animation.
The award winners have been invited to attend the annual National Events in New York City, with a National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, June 2. Art and writing from Gold Medalists will be featured in the National Exhibition at Parsons School of Design at The New School and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery. The exhibition will be on display June 2-12.
Alberts has earned a scholarship to enroll in the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL.

MHS instructor named nominee for NEAF teaching excellence award
Andrew Hirshman, a social studies instructor at Mundelein High School, has been selected by the Illinois Education Association [IEA] as its nominee for a National Education Association Foundation [NEAF] Award for Teaching Excellence.
Hirshman was recognized for the nomination April 21 in Rosemont at the annual Representative Assembly of the IEA. Some 1,200 delegates, guests and state dignitaries attended the event.
“Andrew Hirshman is an educational leader and innovator who is committed to schools and students,” said IEA President Cinda Klickna. “He not only devotes his professional life to education in Mundelein, he creates opportunities for his students to connect with other students and educators here and in other countries. His world view engages his students and expands their horizons.”
In selecting Hirshman for the award, the IEA awards committee cited several of his specific accomplishments. Hirshman engaged his students with educational trips to Asia, Europe and Africa. He set up on-line discussion boards between his students and those in several South African schools. He traveled to Africa to observe and learn about effective teaching practices. In Mundelein, he is a sponsor of extra-curricular activities, and created a student peer jury based on the principles of restorative justice. Hirshman also serves as a trustee of the Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System.

What are your hobbies/interests? –
Spending time with my family, reading, and DIY-ing just about anything I can get my hands on. And I just realized how boring I am... :)
Insider tip for parents –
I once read that instead of asking your student "What did you learn today?" or "What grade did you get?" you could ask them "Did you ask any good questions at school today?" Most students don't even realize that they are learning, and if they are encouraged to ask questions they get more out of their education. I've tried it with my 6 year-old daughter and it's amazing how much more she has to say when I ask about HER questions!
Best part of working at MHS? –
The students. I think if you ask most staff here they will agree that we have some really incredible students who make our jobs exciting.
You many not know…
My parents attended MHS and took me to all the basketball games growing up. I was devastated when I found out that I had to go to the rival school- Libertyville.
What college/university did you attend?
Bradley University and Northern Illinois University, as well as Semester at Sea for my study abroad.
How long have you worked at MHS? – 10 years
Who or what inspires you? –
The teachers I work with. I would not be the teacher I am if I didn't have a great group of people to work with each day. We are constantly learning both content and educational philosophy from each other. Shout out to Social Studies!
What is your favorite part of your job? -
Well I already said the students and teachers, but I really enjoy the fact that I have a job where I am encouraged to try something new. Each day presents its own challenges or things to get me excited to go to work.
Good book recommendation? –
"The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah was recommended to me a few months ago, and I couldn't put it down. My whole family has since read it and all recommend it as well. And I always have to recommend my favorite book series of all time- Harry Potter.
