Recognition

Mundelein HS recognized as a District of Distinction
The MHS administration was recently notified that Mundelein High School District 120 has been recognized as a District of Distinction by a national organization.  Districts of Distinction is a
national recognition program created by District Administration magazine to honor school districts that are leading the way with new ideas that work. The group looks to recognize established initiatives that are yielding quantifiable benefits, and that could be replicated by other districts. After one year, 473 district nominations have resulted in 176 school districts being honored.

MHS was specifically recognized for its 1:1 Computer Initiative along with the Technology Support Internship [TSI].  For just about two years now, students have had their own personal Chromebooks that they keep for their entire high school career. This boost in technology has provided many opportunities for new approaches to both learning and teaching. Along with the Chromebooks came the TSI program which helps support Chromebook use and their repair when things go wrong. Students are supervised as they troubleshoot any problems with the Chromebooks that students or staff might have. Many of the TSI students go on to earn certification in various aspects of technology repair and service.

“This is a terrific example of how Mundelein High School District 120 makes a strong commitment to the education of its students,” said Kevin Myers, Mundelein High School District 120 superintendent. “The TSI program has made this an easy transition with about 90 percent of both students and staff giving the 1:1 initiative an A+,” he explained.

Activities

MHS art teacher, students exhibit their work in Chicago events
Mundelein High School art instructor, Michael Bale, was one of 52 artists chosen to exhibit his artwork at the Bridgeport Art Center’s Fourth Annual Art Competition in Chicago this past weekend. The 52 were chosen following an extensive application process.

Five MHS students will participate in the Third annual Illinois High School Art Exhibition [IHSAE] Sunday, March 6 at the Zhou B Art Center. More than 30 colleges and university art departments participate in the show, distributing more than $10 million in scholarship money to participants in the show.

The MHS students competing include Julia Anderson, sophomore, painting; Angela David, freshman, drawing; Michael Del Rosario, junior, photography; Marina Hamm-Gordils, junior
, photography; and Myah Strokosch, sophomore, sculpture.

The IHSAE’s General Exhibition is a “Best of the Best” high school art competition developed to recognize students for their artistic excellence. Each year, more than 100 city, suburban, public and private high schools participate from the Chicagoland area. Schools enter more than 2,500 students works of art in several categories for judging. The IHSAE jurors select 500 individual artworks that best represent these categories to be on display. The 500 students artists selected then have the opportunity to compete against each other for IHSAE awards and scholarships.

NHS students to host adult prom for SRACLC
While many students in Mundelein High School’s National Honor Society [NHS] are looking forward to their high school prom, about 150 of them will be preparing for or participating in the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County [SRACLC] adult prom on Friday, March 4. The event will be held at the Mundelein Senior Center from 7 to 9 p.m.

About 60-70 area residents attend this event each year which includes dancing to the music of a DJ, wearing casual to formalwear, enjoying the socializing and making new friends. According to Jerri Craven, one of the NHS advisors, the students enjoy the event as much as the attendees.
“This is a great experience for our students to plan a major event and to have exposure to all the different situations that come up while preparing for the evening,” Craven explained. Nancy Toland is also an advisor for NHS.

The roughly 150 NHS students are divided into two groups to make the event a success. The seniors plan and organize the details like set up, clean up, food organization, DJ play list, etc. The new inductees are asked to be at the event and socialize with the guests.

The NHS students also plan and coordinate their Induction Ceremony each year, they prepare and deliver food to local food pantries and provide tutoring for MHS students through different venues.
“I had a first this year,” Craven said. “Even though it’s a tradition that the seniors do the planning while the new inductees do the socializing, I had requests from seniors that they’d like to attend the actual event again this year. That shows how enjoyable and meaningful this event is to our NHS members … that makes me proud,” she concluded.

Date change for the upcoming Orchesis show
The show will feature solos, duets and small group dances choreographed and performed by MHS Orchesis members.  The MHS dance PE class will also perform dances their Term 3 class dances.
Kids from the community will showcase their dance alongside Orchesis members after attending the upcoming youth dance clinic.  Youth clinic Sunday, March 6th 1-2:30pm.

The cost of the clinic is $15 (includes a tshirt).$10 if they have already attended a clinic this school year)
