Senior Baby Ads
Senior Baby Ads (a yearbook recognition ad) are a great way to commemorate student achievements and important milestones.

Senior should have received a flier about when and how to purchase senior baby ads for the school yearbook earlier this year.

If you are interested in making this purchase, please be aware that the deadline is April 26. A ⅛ page colored ad is $50.00.

All sales go through our yearbook publishing company, Jostens. See their website for more information at:
https://www.jostens.com/yearbooks/yearbook-ads.html

Please do not contact or send material to the school, as Jostens manages the school’s yearbook ad sales.

Additionally, if you have not yet pre-ordered the 2018-19 book, please do so by placing the order through Jostens: https://goo.gl/jwQJdB

Thank you for your support of the MHS yearbook!

Poetry Slam Team earns honors at Adler Music and Arts Center
Members of the Mundelein High School Poetry Slam Team took part with a number of other schools at the Young Blood Spoken Word and Pop-Up Art Show at the David Adler Music and Arts Center in Libertyville on March 3. Several members of the group earned honors for their work. Team members include Raegan Duym, Isabelle Jurasz, Meghan Mathys and Rose Rosell.

Mathys won first place with her poems, “Little Girl” and “Mary Moe.” “Little Girl” is a piece about innocence and the voices that try to knock girls down. “Mary Moe” is about imagination and the unlimited opportunities a young girl can have when she dreams big. Her poem ends listing the names of powerful women who have made a difference in the world, past and present.

Jurasz took second place with her poem, “An Apology to My Mother.” The piece focuses on her dual identity. She begins the piece ashamed of her Philippine heritage and ends awakened and apologizing to her mother for trying to hide her culture.

“Her mother was in the audience and had never read the piece before,” said Meredith Teuber, advisor to the group along with Krysta Penuel. “When Isabelle ended the piece by looking directly at her mother and apologized to her mother in the language of her heritage, the entire audience was moved, many brought to tears.”

Duym kicked off the show by condemning society’s version of beauty and empowering people to change their definitions of beauty and see all humanity as beautiful. Duym’s imagery highlighted human behavior and groupthink.

Junior earns full-ride summer scholarship to NYU Tisch School of the Arts
Mundelein High School junior, Allan Rodriguez, has landed a summer scholarship to study film at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. The scholarship amounts to about $12 thousand that covers tuition, meals, housing, insurance, weekend events, etc.
Allan Rodriguez

The program is a four-week college course during the summer where students from all over the world go to study film and by the end of the course, they come out with a short film, music video, and a specific project of their own which they then use as their application film when they apply to NYU Tisch School of the Arts for their freshman year. At his young age, Rodriguez already has a lengthy resume.

“While I’ve been fascinated with making videos since I was young, I started fully pursuing my passion when I was in sixth grade,” Rodriguez said. “Since then I’ve filmed many short/Micro films, have become the president of the MHS Film Club and started a production company in which I create ads, promos, commercials, event videos and even music videos for local bands,” he explained.

According to Kent Meister, Rodriguez’s Advanced Media instructor, he’ll have a great learning experience at NYU.

“During the year Allan is able to work on film for 50 minutes at a time in my class and usually is the person leading the pack because of his passion and skills. I am excited for him to be in a program where this is what he gets to do during the whole day surrounded by so many others who share the same level of passion for film and editing.”

In addition to creating a number of films and music videos Rodriguez also created Clover Visuals, a freelance filmmaking production company run by a friend and himself. They produce live event video, wedding/party videos and other projects for clients throughout the Chicagoland/northern Illinois area.

“I’m really excited for this opportunity because I’ve never been a believer in film school because of how expensive it is. But I know how essential it is because of the opportunities presented and connections you make with the people you meet. I’m excited for everyone I’ll meet and work with and obviously how I get to go to New York.”

Meister concluded, “I am truly happy to see him have this opportunity which will go well beyond what he can learn in my class or from youtube. I can’t wait to check in with him after this program to hear about what he has learned and how it has taken his passion/skills to the next level.”

MHS to hold Civics Fair March 14
For the second year, Mundelein High School will hold a Civics Fair featuring Advanced Placement (AP) US and Comparative Government students. The event will take place Thursday, March 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school’s commons area.

Among the scheduled guests for the Fair will be Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz and representatives from the offices of Melinda Bush and Daniel Didech and possibly others. The goal is for students to present in Science-Fair style, proposals to reform the US political system based on the founding principles of the nation.

“The students have come up with some great ideas to present information about term limits, the Electoral College, making election day a national holiday and campaign finance reform, to name a few,” said Tom Kuhn, AP US and Comparative Government instructor and coordinator of the event. “They don’t just present information, though; they also must devise ways to make implementation of the reforms possible,” he described.

The projects will be judged by a panel of social studies instructors, past and present, and the top five finishers will move on to state competition at Adlai Stevenson High School in April.
The Civics Fair is conducted as part of the Mikva Challenge Project, Civics Works. The Challenge was founded on the premise that youth voice and participation matter and that civic and political life will be stronger when youth participate and help shape their own destinies. According to their website, Mikva Challenge develops youth to be empowered, informed and active citizens who will promote a just and equitable society.

Kuhn, a former AP exam reader, now consults in social studies for the College Board and is working on a teacher edition for a textbook in social studies as well.

Mundelein Theatre to present Group Interpretation
The Mundelein Theatre Group Interpretation (GI) team will present a preview of their 2019 competition piece, I Kill Giants, on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mundelein High School Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to each performance. Additional information can be found at www.mundeleintheatre.org.

Group Interpretation is a 30 minute, student-led performance of any literary work. The focal point of the performance is "out" to the audience with limited on-stage focus. The performance is minimal in nature, meaning that performers wear a uniform dress (not costumes) and build a minimalistic set. Sound effects are permitted but no lighting, specific costuming, properties or theater makeup can be used. It is an IHSA-sanctioned event where schools compete against other schools with a chance to earn the opportunity to compete at a State Final tournament.

I Kill Giants is a graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura, which was also made into a motion picture in 2017.  It is the story of Barbara Thorson, a girl battling monsters, both real and imagined, and kicking butt and taking names as she faces her greatest fear. The story has been described as a bittersweet, coming-of-age story. The GI team is made up of Sydney Litka, Mary McMurray, Natalie Williams, Amari Liebe, Miriam Mitry, Katie Staroszczyk, Brooke Mellen, Eli Walter, Lance Evans, Matthew Callas, Mirabella Logan and Rosy Castro. Mark Landuyt directs and Sara Gunther is the associate director. Student assistant directors are Colin Nacion and Halli Carpender.
