Semester 1 Finale! December 15, 2017

It is hard to believe this is the end of semester 1 - the school year is half over!  May the winter break be a time for each of our MHS families to count blessings and consider desirable next steps for improving as we enter the new calendar year.  For me personally, I appreciate working in a school where student needs take precedent.  Change isn't easy.  Easily, I have seen staff wrestle with issues related to the new schedule.  Through this fall of change, staff have worked hard to make the new bell schedule work and continually address the needs of our students when making improvements.  I can't take this for granted.

From my family to yours, have a wonderful winter break and holiday season.

Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Kroll, Principal

Winter Break Building Hours
The District will be closed on December 25, 26, January 1, and 2.  All District and School offices will be closed.

Special Information about School Closure Procedures
Please remember that the final decision is up to the parent/guardian. If you decide to keep your child or children home because of the weather, please contact the Attendance Office to inform them of your decision.

If we have a school closure before Dec. 21 due to weather, the make-up day will be Thursday, Dec. 21. If school is closed because of weather during January to mid-February, the make-up day will be Monday, Feb. 19, currently a day off for Presidents’ Day.

Delayed Start: If schools will open on a delayed start, then students should arrive at school no later than their normal late start times. A delayed start could be used if weather or road conditions are severe overnight but expected to improve in the morning. On a delayed-start day, school buses will run their routes for late start Wednesday’s.  Parents who drive their children to school should drop their children off. After-school activities will continue as normally scheduled. This is the current late start Wednesday schedule.

School Closure: If schools are closed for the day because of weather, students will remain home. Generally, this also means that all other school activities, such as after-school clubs, sports, practices, etc. are also canceled for that day. The lost instructional time may need to be made up later in the year in order to meet the State of Illinois's requirements instructional time for students.

Timing: The decision to close schools during extreme weather (typically snow, ice or extreme cold) is made as early as possible, often very early in the morning. The decision is based on the best weather information available and how inclement weather will affect students, staff and parents during travel times.

Temperatures: There's no official temperature that closes schools. The Superintendent and his leadership team consider several factors, including road conditions. Typically a wind chill of negative 30 will start the conversation about closing schools.

Who decides: Canceling school because of inclement weather is the Superintendent's decision, and he communicates with his leadership team to make the best decision for our students.

Mundelein Theatre Wins Shakespeare Slam
The Mundelein Theatre Shakespeare Slam team was the winner of the 2017 Chicago Shakespeare Slam. This is the second year in a row the team advanced to the final round of competition. Roughly 50 teams from across the Chicagoland area participated in this program, sponsored by Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Nine schools advanced to the final bout, which was held December 11 on the Courtyard Stage at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre on Navy Pier. It was a close competition, with teams from Niles North and Warren earning runners-up honors.

The team is made up of eight performers (Kimberly Barr, Anooha Dasari, Dan Haller, Rachel Larson, Sydney Litka, Miriam Mitry, Allan Rodriguez, Ginny Zundel), as well as two student coaches (Ellie Mellen, Colin Nacion).  In addition, several students from last year’s team wanted to help develop and coach this year’s team.  Known as the Bard’s Circle, these students (Maddie Martorana, Brianna Moderhack, Natalie Williams) attended every rehearsal and served as additional resources for the team.  The team is coached by Mark Landuyt and Jonathan Meier.

The Slam competition is described as first and foremost, an ensemble building program – building community, first among the members of a school’s team, and second among the many schools participation across the Chicago region.

Adaptive PE Basketball Game
MHS students in the Adaptive Physical Education class played a fun and competitive basketball game against Warren Township High School on Friday, December 8th. This exciting game started with students from the All Abilities Choir singing the National Anthem.  At halftime both teams were on the floor singing and dancing with one another creating an energetic atmosphere and teaching kids good sportsmanship. Also during the halftime show, cheerleader Neila Stevenson did a stunt where she was safely flipped and thrown during an exciting routine. The game ended with student-athlete Dani Lococo, scoring the final point for MHS.  This game was viewed by many students at MHS, the player’s families and staff members, who came out to support the students in the Supported Learning program and cheered them on to a victory!

Basketball
Congratulations goes out to the Varsity team for defeating Stevenson High School this past week. It was a complete team victory! The mustangs haven’t beaten Stevenson since 2012. Quoted from the daily Herald: "We just reiterated exactly what we wanted to do, and we recognized it," Mundelein first-year coach Matt Badgley said. "(Stevenson), they're such good three-point shooters and such good shooters in general. We just reminded our kids that they're going to make shots, even when we defend them well."
