Families,
This week, Dr. LeVar Ammons, Director of Equity in Valley View Dist 365, led our faculty in an “Exploration of The N-Word: Navigating The Complexity of Race Relations in American History, Language, Performance & Identity”. Our staff engaged in critical reflection and dialogue and had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of this racial slur.
Additionally, our Black Student Union (BSU) and Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) students participated in facilitated breakout sessions. Within their breakouts, students discovered the multidimensional impacts of the N-word and digested their role in its dissemination and use.
Kijuana Boulrece, an Educational Chair from the NAACP, applauded our staff’s receptiveness to this extremely complex Professional Development and praised our students who spoke their truths.
As we move forward in our pursuit of fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful community here at MHS, please support us from home. Please read the two biggest takeaways that are important to note.
The majority of students, regardless of ethnicity, feel uncomfortable or unsafe when the N-word is used in school settings. Therefore, we want to encourage educators to disrupt the social use of the N-word in school settings by asking students to refrain from using it. At the end of the day, the N-word does not promote a culture of inclusivity which is ultimately what we seek to foster and promote here at MHS.
The N-word, if used as hate speech, will be reported and subject to disciplinary consequences as outlined in our student handbook. Racial slurs, derogatory language and hate speech will not be protected. There is no place for it on our campus.

Black History Month is celebrated February 1-28 and it is a time to acknowledge key African American figures from the past and present. Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans and honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history. It is also an opportunity to spotlight and celebrate the achievement, triumphs and successes of the Black community.

You are invited to build new skills, showcase projects and make connections. There are a variety of ways to get involved with the Greatest Show & Tell event in Lake County.
Sign up to be a Maker
Maker Faire Lake County is a great place to showcase the projects you or your students are creating. Think about those amazing builds happening in PLTW, Entrepreneurship focused classes, as well as robotics or other after school clubs. Looking for inspiration, sneak a peek at the Makers from 2022. The application opens Feb 1, 2023.
Participate in the Robotics Competition
High school students may participate as part of a school team, on a team formed independently, or by signing up for the Lake County Robotics Competition Engage class. The Engage CLRC class will meet on Saturdays live in person at the Grayslake Campus AND Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan: 9AM-Noon in February, March, and April. To register for the LCRC Explore class: Engage Registration The competition will be held during the Maker Faire. Interested in learning more? Attend the kickoff on Jan. 28th at 10am in room T114 at the College of Lake County campus.
Younger students interested in robotics may register for CLC's 4H Robotics Spin clubs, which will also meet on the same day (Saturdays) from February to March. Explore Program The 4H Robotics teams will participate in the 4H Robotics Showcase at CLC on April 22nd. Participants will also be invited and encouraged to demonstrate their robots at Maker Faire Lake County,
Volunteer to host a booth
Not quite sure what your project could be, but you still want to get involved? Or maybe you are looking for a way to earn community service hours. We are in need of volunteers to host a booth where we provide the activity and the training. Or maybe you are more comfortable with setup and providing general assistance. Summer School 2023
As we approach the cold winter season, it is time to start thinking about Summer School!
Important: For those who have had students in MHS summer school before, our registration procedure has changed. Students will now register for their desired summer school class during course registration with their counselor. Families will be billed through RevTrack at a later date. Please visit our summer school course guide (linked below) for more information.
Students should print and fill out the “Summer School Course Selection” page and bring it to their course selection appointment. Printed copies are available in the Guidance Office.

2023-2024 Course Selection
Course selection for the 2023-2024 school year will begin on Monday, November 28th with our grade 11 students. Students in grades 10 and 9 will select courses after the winter break. The following resources are available to our families to assist with the course selection process.
Free SAT prep in the Literacy Center!
CCRC
This event is specifically meant for juniors or early graduates who will be beginning the college application process in the summer/ fall of 2023. We will talk about resources available at MHS for our students and you will hear directly from a college representative who will provide tips and insight to the process!
You DO NOT want to miss this event! For the first time ever, MHS students will be able to gain inside access to the college admissions process. During the Case Studies event, students and parents will meet in small groups with an experienced admissions officer who leads a discussion on what colleges look for in an applicant, as well as what every college values.
Students learn first-hand how they will be evaluated, which helps them begin thinking of the qualities and strengths they bring to the process and what they will need to do to prepare for the application process.This event is strongly recommended for MHS juniors who plan to apply to college.

Boys Bowling Coaches Corner
Varsity boys bowling advanced through the Rockford sectional to the IHSA state finals. Team shot 5887 over 6 games. High individual games Sam Gottfried 278, Andrew Hampsey 251, and Winston Petri 234.

The Varsity Dance team is headed to state, congratulations!!!
Wrestling
Frosh / Soph had a Tournament over the weekend and had three wrestlers on the podium. 182lbs Dylan Coe took 3rd and Celso Cabrera placed 4th at 220lbs and James Krusinski took 2nd place.

The Varsity Team was at the Lake County Invite hosted by Libertyville High School with 17 teams. Mundelein placed 5th overall as a team. The Mustangs had a few on the podium. 5th place finishers include: 113lbs Pablo Bacerra,132lbs EthanThomas, 160lbs Ty Murray, 170lbs Mac Rastrelli, and 182lbs Mike Nieves. Mundelein's Abisi Hernandez placed 3rd at 220lbs. We also had 2 champions at Lake County: 120 Bryce Durlacher and Benji Albavera. Congratulations and Good Luck in Regionals.
Baseball
Congratulations to Head Coach Randy Lerner for being chosen as the Class 4A baseball Coach of the Year by his peers. We are so proud of you!

Our MHS Portrait of a Learner tenets affirm student identity through schoolwide values, expectations and practices.
Dress Code
Although we take great pride in a dress code that encourages self-expression, we do want to remind students of our student dress code policy as found in our student handbook.
Clothing must cover all undergarments (waistbands and straps excluded).
Fabric covering all private parts must not be seen through.
Clothing that depicts, advertises or advocates the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances is prohibited.
Clothing that depicts pornography, nudity or sexual acts is prohibited.
Attendance
Regular school attendance is required and necessary to develop the academic and intrapersonal skills needed for success. Students are expected to attend each class and be on time. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. If your student is going to be absent from school, please call the Attendance Line 847-949-2200 ext. 1998 (Spanish) ext. 1999 (English) by 10:00 am.

Our MHS Attendance Committee felt it was important to create a simple and clear visual that students and families can reference to understand our expectations surrounding what good attendance looks like.
Bus Notifications
Would you like to know when your student’s bus is going to be late? For Mundelein bus routes, Lakeside Transportation is using the Bus Bulletin notification system to notify parents and students when there are bus delays and schedule changes. Technology Use
Students will utilize technology to support their learning in class. Students are reminded to use their Chromebooks and cell phones appropriately at all times.
