Principal Blog: Mustang News

September 23, 2022

Mustang Families,

What an exciting week! We began the week with different themed dress-days, a powder-puff game followed by senior girl's night. Our poetry slam performances during our lunch periods were emotionally moving while our student drum line performances throughout the hallways were electrifying! Our staff grilled over 1,100 hotdogs at our community cookout on Thursday during our boys soccer, boys football and girl volleyball games. We culminated the week with a school-wide pep assembly and our MHS parade! We look forward to a wonderful homecoming game tonight and a GLOW-themed homecoming dance tomorrow brought to us by Student Leadership and our Assistant Principal of Student Life.

If you have any questions, please call the Main Office at 847-949-2200

Sincerely,
Alexandria Rios Taylor

Rosh HaShanah & Yom Kippur

From September 25-27 some of our Jewish students will be observing Rosh HaShanah which marks the beginning of a 10-day period of introspection. It culminates with Yom Kippur, October 4-5 which requires a 24-hour fasting period and is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Some students may participate in additional prayers and observances throughout these dates and may be more tired than usual. We recognize that some students may be absent during this time and may require additional time to turn in assignments. Students are encouraged to speak directly to their teacher if they will need additional time for assignments or alternate dates for assessments. YouScience

Exciting news! Beginning this week, Mundelein High School freshman students began taking the YouScience assessment during their FAM (Freshman Advisory) sessions. We believe YouScience is a great way for students to learn more about themselves, explore high-demand careers that are a good fit for them, and gain a better understanding of how their unique talents are needed in the economy. Click HERE to learn more about YouScience and what it means for your student.

Be a STEAMScholar!

The Illinois Tenth Congressional District STEAM Scholar Program is an exciting educational opportunity launched by Congressman Brad Schneider in 2018 for high school students in our community. The program aims to connect highly-motivated students interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with hands-on learning experiences throughout our district.

In the fall, students selected to participate in the STEAM Scholars program will have the opportunity to join Congressman Schneider on visits to four STEAM-related businesses and facilities during the 2022-2023 school year. On these visits, students will have the chance to participate in discussions with local employees, business owners, and educators, and learn more about the STEAM career opportunities in our backyard

Their goal is to connect students with mental health resources, assistive supports and programs that aim to destigmatize mental illness. Remember, it’s okay to not be okay! Call 9-8-8 if you or your student are experiencing suicidal crisis or emotional duress.

Last week’s Runner of the Week: FR Hannah Lee! Hannah has improved immensely since the beginning of the season! She always asks thoughtful questions and puts her best effort into everything! Her hard work is paying off as she has run a new lifetime best in 3 of her last 4 races!

Day #1 of Homecoming Week practice spirit days: Neon Day!

Day #2: Hats and Shades Day

Saw some great efforts on Tuesday’s meet at Waukegan. We had 4 runners run faster than they did on the same course 2 weeks ago & an additional 6 course PRs! Also shout out to Praise who was the overall winner & her teammates were so happy for her, they insisted on this picture!

Saw some great efforts and awesome improvements at the Warren Invite last Saturday! Overall we had 10 lifetime bests and 5 season bests! The Fresh/Soph race was led by Freshman Brooklyn D’Ambrosio who placed 12th and ran a new lifetime best!

Boys Soccer - Coaches Corner Sebastian Falinski & Mike Dayton

On September 20, the Boys Soccer Team hosted Warren High School for their Mental Health Awareness Game. A raucous crowd cheered the boys onto a 2-1 victory. More importantly, everyone in the soccer stadium was asked to help “Fight the Stigma” and do more to help other people. Thank you to the entire Mundelein Community for their support in doing what is necessary to help keep people safe.

MUSTANGS CONTINUE TO RUN STRONG!

Report from the Bill Dawson Warren Invitational. The Frosh/Soph team got things going by winning against 18 other teams, including a very tough Fremd team Javier Mata again came away with the first-place finish (out of 299 runners) and doing it by breaking 16 minutes for the first time on the 3-mile course. Alberto Diaz took 3rd overall, with a PR of 16:16. Nathan McCreight took 17th, Logan Ramirez took 19th, and Finn Keegan took 23rd to round out the scoring.

The Varsity race had their share of great performances as well, starting with Tom Russ’ 15th place finish. Nick Schwenk took 59th (breaking 18 for the first time), Logan Green took 75th (PR), and Ethan Moy (PR) and John Gray took 83rd and 84th) out of 110 runners, as our squad finished a surprising 12th out of 16 teams.

I want to single out 3 runners for their performances at this meet. All dropped around 3 minutes or more from their PR's. Anytime you can do that you know that you are getting it done. They are James Glaskin-Clay (21:31, a 2:56 PR), Liam O'Neill (21:59, a 3:47 drop), and John Stonecliffe, who ran 22:54, a massive 5:34 PR! Way to Go!

Report from the Carmel/MHS Cross Town Challenge: Rain and lightning meant the meet was halted before any races were run.

Next Meets: The team travels to the Palatine Invitational Saturday September 24th to run against teams from across Illinois as well as some of the top schools in the Midwest. This meet has been a team favorite over the years and a showcase cross country meet in our own “backyard”. The team then returns to the home course (at the Diamond Lake Sports Complex) on Wednesday, September 28th for Senior Night as we dual against Lake Zurich. Race time 4:45pm. Come check it out!
