Recognition
Illinois Principal Association Lake Region honors 2 MHS Students
Yoline Hockett and Brandon Valeroso will be honored by the IPA Lake Region on April 20. Each year, the IPA asks Lake County principals to identify two students from their school who deserve recognition. As principal, I have consistently honored students from the AVID program each year in recognition of completing 4 years of AVID in addition to outstanding academic performances.

Brandon Valeroso |
Brandon Valeroso is more than just a good student. True, his academic successes are many and he thrives in his advanced courses, but many students could say the same. What sets Brandon apart is his focus and discipline. Brandon displays these qualities both inside and outside of the classroom whether working in study groups to prepare for his AP Calc exams or training for his 4th degree black belt. Few students have the focus and determination to consistently work towards a long term goal like Brandon. This will serve him well in college, where he plans on studying mechanical engineering.

The indoor track season concluded with a large invitational meet at Lakes High School’s spectacular, brand-new venue on March 18th. We had some very strong performances led by Junior Marcel Siepko. Marcel scored all our points, taking 7th in the 60m dash, and 5th in the 200m dash. Marcel has been our most consistent performer indoors, placing high in every meet. Junior Tyler Miller had another good performance in the 60m hurdles, taking 11th. Tyler came back to run the 200m for the first time this season, running a PR of 27.86. Junior Ignacio Lopez-Torrente Sanz also ran a PR in the 200, running 25.94. Ryan Bugaring ran well in the 60m, taking 24th in the large field in a PR of 7.73. Junior Danny Shannon and Sophomore Julian Eagar both had season bests in the open 400. In the Field Events, Ian Xu had a good day, clearing 5' in the HJ for the first time this year, and getting a PR in the Triple Jump. Sophomore Brendan Hansen took 14th in the Shot Put, throwing 12.84m (42'1.5"). Our young distance squad continues to improve as well. The 4 x 800m Relay consisting of Freshmen Javier Mata, Marco De La Cruz, and Logan Ramirez, along with Sophomore Caden Minehart, collectively dropped 20 seconds from our previous best from last week. They rank as one of the best F/S relays in the State. We had 3 other PR's from the distance runners, as Sophomore Nick Schwenk had a big drop in the 3200m, Sophomore Mariano Rodriguez dropped time in the 800m, and Freshman Finn Keegan achieved his personal record in the 1600m.
