5Essentials Parent Survey

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.

These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environments
  • Ambitious Instruction

Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.

We value your opinions about the operations of the high school and are looking for your input. This is your chance to provide input concerning your children’s education. MHS benefits from a strong response rate from parents in order for us to access to the data from the survey. The survey is available to MHS parents now and the deadline to complete the survey is March 22 but we encourage you to complete it as soon as you can.

Recognition

Congratulations

Joanna Rodriguez, described as “the rock in our front office,” has been named as a recipient of the “Those Who Excel” award by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Joanna Rodriguez

Since 1970, the ISBE has sponsored Those Who Excel to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to Illinois’ public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools. Joanna, the administrative assistant to the assistant principal, was given a meritorious service award in the category of educational service personnel.

In a nomination letter to the ISBE, Jamie DiCarlo, the assistant superintendent of student services, described Joanna’s value to the MHS community and wrote that she is one of the most present and reliable volunteers in all of our community outreach efforts since joining our team three years ago.

Joanna is a graduate of  our school and a first-generation student. DiCarlo said Joanna draws from her own experience to encourage and empower both students and parents and called her “the rock in our front office” and “the voice for those who do not feel they have a voice.”

Coaches Corner: Kurt Rutz

On Saturday we traveled back to Lakes HS to compete in the Clash at the Coliseum, a spectacular meet with tremendous competition.

We had a number of highlights on the day, starting in the sprints. Marcel Siepko again led the way with an 11th place finish in the 60m dash, running 7.34. After a great anchoring leg in the 4 x 200 relay, Marcel came back to take 8th in the 200m, running 23.79, best time of the year to date. In the 60m HH we had a bit of a surprise, as Tyler Miller had a huge breakthrough. Following a technical glitch which required Tyler to re-run his heat, Tyler exploded by winning his heat and dropping half a second from his previous best time. Tyler's time of 9.46 was good enough for 9th place. Sohan Karuturi also took 14th with a time of 9.59 in the stellar field. Sophomore Brandon Hansen had a great opening meet, taking 10th in the Shot Put. With almost no practice Brandon heaved the shot 13.27m, or 43'6", already improving over his best throw from last year.

Our young distance squad also had a great day, showing major improvement over the first 2 meets. Freshmen led the way, as Marco De La Cruz broke 5 minutes in the 1600m for the first time, running 4:56.95, and taking 26th overall. Marco was the top freshman in the meet. Alberto Diaz ran 5:09.60, a 13 second drop from last week, taking 33rd overall, and was the 2nd freshman in the meet. A huge surprise in the 800m, as freshman Javier Mata ran 2:11.62, a 15 second drop from last week, and taking 22nd overall, a really impressive time for a freshman at this point in time. Freshman Logan Ramirez ran 2:21.79 in the 800, a 7 second drop from his previous best.

Alumni Corner

Boys Track

Our collegiate Mustangs had a great weekend, competing in their respective conference meets.

Starting with Bobby Nuzzo (SIU-E),who took 3rd in his conference in the 200 (21.77), and 4th in the 60m (6.99). Bobby now ranks 4th All-Time for SIU-E in the 200m.

Kaleb Carlson (Greenville University) helped his team win their conference championships by winning 2 events. Kaleb won the mile with a time of 4:29.66, and then also won the 3000m with a time of 9:16.28. Way to go, Kaleb!

Carl Schoenfield (Augustana) continued his recovery from injury by running 16:30.77 in the 5000m.

Michael Keegan (MSOE) helped his team out by taking 6th in the 3000m with a time of 9:01.16. Michael also aided his team by running the 5000m and taking 7th in a time of 15:47.68. That's one heck of a double!

Robert St Clair (Case Western) also doubled up for his team, running the mile and 3000m. Robert took 14th in the mile, running 4:30.40, and then came back to take 16th in the 3000m, running 8:57.55.

Last but certainly not least, Carter Schorr (Butler University) competed in the Big East Conference Championships in the mile. Carter had a breakthrough weekend, running 4:15.20 in the semis, and qualifying for the finals. The next day he came back and ran 4:15.92, taking 9th. Really tough to do on back-to-back days. Great performances by all our Alumni. Proud of you all! Thanks for representing us all so well!!!

Girls Track & Field

Coaches Corner: Nate Sweet

The MHS Girls Track and Field team started their season with two meets over President's Day Weekend.  First was a friendly dual at Buffalo Grove for the first indoor meet since 2020.  The girls then followed that with a meet at the newly opened field house at Lakes HS.  The girls competed well and are eager to continue the process of getting faster and stronger.
