Social Emotional Learning

On September 14, 2021, your student viewed the second of eight wellness-related presentations this school year. This month’s presentation serves as an introduction to research-based, healthy coping strategies to deal with stress. Learning and practicing these strategies and skills will be beneficial for students now and throughout adulthood. At the end of the presentation are numerous resources available to all. You may access this presentation in your student email, on the D120 website, the D120 Facebook page, and the Principal’s Blog. Please send immediate questions or concerns to Marisa Graham, School Psychologist.

The Top 3 Takeaways and Tips from this month’s presentation include:

  • Everyone experiences stress. It’s a normal part of life at every age. How does your family use problem-solving skills when confronted with day-to-day problems?
  • Stress is a motivator. Stress can energize your body, preparing you to meet life’s challenges. How can you and your family members reframe the way you view stress in order to incorporate more positivity?
  • Focusing time and energy on only the things we can control, such as our thinking, is a great strategy to help manage stress. Let go of what you cannot control. Think about a stressful situation your family has experienced or is currently experiencing. What aspects were/are within your control? What aspects were/are not within your control?

It was another great week for Mustang Football! The freshman team won their 2nd game in a row by a score of 39-20. They improved their overall record to 2-1 (1-0). The Varsity team jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and set the tone for the rest of the night. QB Brock Paluch had 4 touchdown passes. Drew Wellington and Omari Rhinehart each had 3 touchdowns to seal the convincing 48-27 victory over Waukegan. It was a great total team effort!

This past weekend we competed at the Springfield Lanphier Invite. We ran all the freshmen down in the freshman race, with everyone else running in the varsity race. Times will be listed below. Despite having some of our best runners running in the freshman race, we still managed to take 8th out of 11 teams. Sophomore Tom Russ led the way again, taking 8th overall in the varsity race, and breaking 17 minutes for the first time on this hilly course. Soph Jake Hall was 2nd in, taking 28th in a PR, missing a medal by 3 places. 3rd runner Logan Green also PR'd, taking 58th. Mariano Rodriguez and Finn Gilbert, competing in his 1st race of the year, completed the scoring, taking 63rd and 66th, respectively.
The freshman race was competed over 2 miles, and saw our gang take 2nd in the team standings, only 4 points out of 1st. We had 3 medalists in this race, as Marco Delacruz, Alberto Diaz, and Finn Keegan took 4th, 5th, and 8th overall. Biggest surprise of the day, and my pick for Race of the Day, went to Damian Harrison. Damian pushed hard the whole race and took 16th overall. Andrian Afonso took 32nd overall, and kept us in the hunt for the team title.

9/13/21 we ran at Adler Park in Libertyville against Libertyville and Warren, two really good teams that should both make it to State. While losing to both, I was very happy with our performances overall. We did a great job of running as a team, and moving up constantly during the race. Our times are listed below. Shout out to Mariano Rodriguez who ran nearly 4 minutes faster on this tough course than he did last year!

Girls Volleyball

Varsity girls threw down against Waukegan last week and won in two quick sets bringing the Varsity conference record to 1-0.  On Friday night, MHS returned to our home court for the neon night match against Antioch. With the crowd cheering, the girls played a fast-paced tempo and played incredible defense, but fell to Antioch’s impressive offense in two tight sets. The girls at all levels continue to bring the energy and determination each week, building on their experiences from the week before. MHS faces Woodstock North on Monday at home and Libertyville on Thursday at home for Homecoming week. Sophomores and Freshman A play at 5:00, and Varsity and Freshman B play at 6:00.  We will also be showing our school spirit in the Homecoming parade on Friday. Let’s Go Mustangs!

Girls Tennis
