***LAST WEEK TO RESPOND***   5Essentials Parent Survey is open!
Mundelein school districts 75 and 120 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the eighth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. All district schools are required to participate in a school learning conditions survey each year. It was deemed an important component to balanced accountability under the state’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan by stakeholders.

The parent surveys are now available to the public while the student and teacher surveys will be available beginning Dec. 10 through Feb. 14.

“We encourage parents in both our districts to complete the survey so that your voices are heard,” said Kevin Myers, districts 75 and 120 superintendent. “We will take all of your input seriously and use it to continually review and update our current educational practices.”

We guarantee that survey responses will never be connected to you or your child.  No individual will be identified in the school reports; school principals or teachers will never see any individual responses. School reports will only present summary information of how parents feel as a whole, such as the percent of parents agreeing that they feel comfortable raising concerns to their child’s teacher.

The survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring the five “essentials” critical for school success. Those include:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in April 2020. Survey results will also be reported publicly on the 5Essentials reporting site in Spring 2020 and on the State School Report Card website in the Fall of 2020.

February Mustang Pride
On Thursday, February 6, eleven students were honored by MHS staff members for being the best example of Mustang Pride!  Mustang Pride may have looked like

  • Doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do
  • Taking the time to help out another student
  • Living by the motto "winners never quit...quitters never win"
  • Not being satisfied with just doing a job but constantly trying to do the job better
  • Representing MHS in a positive way everywhere you go
  • Going above and beyond
  • Demonstrating the ability to overcome obstacles

Award winners were recognized at a breakfast with their parents and nominating staff member.  Congratulations to a wonderful group of Mustangs!  (See more photos below!)

MHS counselor earns recognition; one of 14 in the nation
Mundelein High School’s College Counselor, Andrea Rusk, has recently been recognized as a 2020 Counselors That Change Lives award recipient. The award is presented on behalf of the Colleges That Change Lives (CTCL) organization.
Andrea Rusk

CTCL is made up of 45 member institutions. Representatives of these institutions may submit nominations annually and then the CTCL Board of Directors selects their Counselors That Change Lives from those nominations.

“My nominator is from Hope College. It was a complete surprise – I didn’t even know I was nominated!, Rusk said.

According to the organization, the Counselors That Change Lives Award recognizes those whose dedication to the college counseling profession reflects the CTCL ideals. By helping students frame their search beyond the ratings and rankings to find a college that provides the foundation for a successful and fulfilling life, these counselors change lives.

Rusk joined the MHS staff as a counselor in 2011 and has been in her role as college counselor since the fall of 2016.

Rusk’s work is recognized on the CTCL website:  “College representatives see her as a great colleague, always appreciative of their time and ready to share a story and a smile whether she sees them on their campus or they are visiting her at Mundelein High School. It’s not easy to make counseling hundreds of students feel personal and intimate, but Andrea makes it happen year after year.”

And to Rusk, Megan O’Rourke, associate dean of admission/coordinator of Midwest Recruitment, said “Your tireless efforts do not go unrecognized and this program is our way of acknowledging all you do to help students and families in your daily work.”
