Recognition
Mundelein High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) will induct 55 new members Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. The new inductees were chosen by a faculty selection committee based on the four principles of NHS, namely character, scholarship, leadership and service. Nancy Toland and Jennifer Fallon serve as advisors to NHS.
Principal Anthony Kroll will open the ceremony followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by NHS member MacKenzie Stewart. Next, NHS member Stephanie Gutierrez will introduce speakers who will explain the four qualities of NHS:
Scholarship, Spanish version, Nickie Figueroa; English version, Sarah Parduhn. Service, German version, Eva Tejeda; English version, Sahil Patel. Leadership, Polish Version, Marta Sikora; English version, Caitlyn Mathews. Character, Gujarati Version, Nishi Shah; English version, Stephanie Gutierrez.
Social Studies Teacher Susan Theotokatas was chosen by the NHS members to be the keynote speaker for the event.

Alumni Guardian Angel
Dustin Castillo, a 2011 Mundelein High School graduate, says that one of his fondest memories from MHS was lifeguarding class with Brett Wilhelm. “Highlight of my day,” he said. Little did he know that what he learned and practiced in that class may literally have saved a man’s life.
Scouting his favorite beach, Windansea in San Diego, he went to do a wave check with friend Jeff Schroeder (a 2010 MHS graduate) because he enjoys surfing and heard there was a swell on the way. While there, they caught sight of someone who seemed to be in distress out in the water.
“I could tell the rip current had a hold on him and was taking him farther out,” he explained. Castillo then jumped into the current to follow him out hoping he could grab him. By the time Castillo reached the man he was head under water and seemed to be in shock. “I grabbed him and put him in a back float and rested his body on top of mine,” he said. “At this point, we were so far out that I knew there was no chance of me getting him back to shore in the rough water.”
Castillo saw his immediate goal was to keep the victim calm. Not able to promise anything, Castillo could only try to keep the man’s head above water as long as he could. “I told him I wasn’t leaving him,” Castillo said.
During this time, Schroeder had gone for help and after about 20 minutes, that help arrived. Together, they brought the victim (Patrick) to shore. At that time, Patrick appeared to be in shock. “I gave him to the safety crew and then walked home,” Castillo said.
It was only later when Castillo saw Patrick on television telling the story of what happened and hoped he could find the young man that Castillo came forward and was reunited with the survivor.

Activities
Middle School, High School choirs join for shared concert
Vocal music will be in the air on Monday, October 21 as groups from the high school will join with singers from West Oak, Fremont and Sandburg middle schools in a free concert at 7 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium.
The high school groups performing will include the Chorale, Master Singers, Sound, Lights, and SoundFX. In closing out the concert, the eighth grade groups will combine to sing “Awake My Song,” and then MHS choirs will join all the eighth grade choirs for “It Gets Better.”
Stevee Bellas and Cory Thompson direct the vocal music department at MHS.
MHS jazz bands host Lake Zurich Jazz Ensemble and professional jazz vocalist
Mundelein High School’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra will host an evening of jazz music along with the Jazz Ensemble from Lake Zurich High School and jazz vocalist Kim Nazarian. The free concert is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in the MHS Auditorium.
Nazarian is a vocalist, educator and lyricist. For the past 25 years she has been harmonizing around the world with New York Voices (NYV). “Whether I’m singing with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra or the next up and coming rhythm section, it is an honor to make my living in music,” Nazarian explained. “I do believe it is my mission in this particular lifetime.”
“I think it’s going to be an awesome experience having Kim Nazarian come to work with our band,” said MHS senior, Ryan Burns, who plays the trumpet. “We haven’t had an opportunity to perform vocal jazz before so this is going to be new,” he said.
A few of the tunes that Nazarian will sing with the bands include selections from the songbook of Ella Fitzgerald and Antônio Carlos Jobim including Orange Colored Sky, Cheek to Cheek, So Danco Sambo and more.
“When we’ve been rehearsing one of the vocal tunes, I’ve been performing the vocal part on tenor saxophone,” said Mira Guiritan, junior, saxophonist. “I’m looking forward to hearing how Kim Nazarian adds her own ornaments and styles to the melodies,” she said.
“Working with someone who has had a career as successful as Kim Nazarian is special and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to learn and perform with her,” said Garrett Munz, MHS senior and also saxophone player.
Nazarian will spend the week in the Chicago area working with different musical groups. “We are excited that our students will have the opportunity to not just work with her, but to perform with her as well,” said Andy Sturgeon, who shares directing the MHS band program with Jerald Shelato. Josh Thompson directs the Lake Zurich Jazz Ensemble.

VolleyballThe Volleyball program would like to thank all who came and supported the Breast Cancer Event last Friday Night. We raised over $4,000.00 for The Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation. This Saturday the Varsity is at Grayslake North for 5 matches. A lot of volleyball in a short time and there are several opportunities to support your Mustangs! GO MUSTANGS!
