MHS seeks nominations for Distinguished Alumni award
Mundelein High School is now seeking nominations for alumni to honor for 2019 as Distinguished Alumni. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21 which is also Homecoming Weekend for Mundelein High School. Nominations will be accepted from February 5 through April 14.
Those to be nominated must be out of high school for at least 10 years and have distinguished themselves in any number of areas such as career paths, military service, government work, medicine, the arts, etc. and also volunteer work and/or philanthropic endeavors.

Anyone may nominate an MHS graduate for the award; however, an email address for the nominee is required. In addition, graduates may nominate themselves and graduates who are deceased also may be nominated.

“Mundelein High School graduates have consistently shown that they take their MHS education and use that to do good in the world in many different ways,” said Kevin Myers, MHS District 120 Superintendent. “We are very proud of our alumni and we enjoy using this awards banquet as a way to recognize them for what they are doing,” he said.

To nominate an MHS graduate for the award, visit the MHS website at www.d120.org, look under  “MHS Community” and select “Alumni.”

“This is a great opportunity to recognize Mundelein High School alumni who are making significant contributions to society and their communities,” said Ron Girard, public information officer and chairman of the Distinguished Alumni Award committee. “It’s a special evening to recognize graduates who showcase how they used their Mundelein High School education to excel and to make a difference.”

MHS educator a finalist for Golden Apple Award
Mundelein High School’s Sara Blair Winter-Rosenberg is a finalist for the 2019 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. She is in her seventh year of teaching Spanish for Heritage Learners at MHS.

Following a competitive process, 32 high school educators were selected as finalists for the award – just six percent of more than 550 nominations.

“The historic opportunity to bring the recognition of the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching to all of the schools and teachers in Illinois is thrilling for us and we are delighted to honor these outstanding 32 finalists,” said Alan Mather, president of Golden Apple.

The Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching honors outstanding teachers for their roles in having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and builds stronger communities. Teacher finalists demonstrate, in their teaching and results, significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning. Fellow educators, students, parents and community members nominate teachers for the awards. Teachers may not self-nominate. All award finalists will be honored Saturday, February 23 at the Golden Apple Celebration of Excellence to be held at the Tinley Park Convention Center.
Award recipients are selected by master educators who understand and recognize instructional best practices and who utilize professional standards to evaluate exemplary teachers and school leaders. Members of the selection committee viewed video evidence of instruction and will observe finalists’ teaching in person in their classrooms – a comprehensive day which includes direct observation of in-classroom teaching accompanied by interviewing finalists’ colleagues, school leaders, students, parents and community members.

As a highly-valued component of this recognition, Northwestern University, Golden Apple’s partner for more than 30 years, provides a Spring Sabbatical to award recipients at no cost. In addition, each Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient receives a $5,000 cash award. They also become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who support current and future teachers and deepen the learning of students. An important part of a Fellows’ mission is to share their expertise and mentor Golden Apple Scholars, who are aspiring teachers with a desire to teach in Illinois’ schools-of-need.

Activities

MHS Parent Ambassadors Present at Middle Schools
The mission of Parent Ambassadors is to make connections with parents and organize opportunities for parents to become more knowledgeable and involved in Mundelein High School.  This month, the Ambassadors will conduct three parent meetings at local middle schools to answer questions about the transition from 8th grade to high school.

In addition to the parent presentation, there is a student presentation run by current MHS students.  The focus of the meeting is to offer an opportunity for incoming parents and students to ask specific questions about the transition to MHS.

8th grade parents and their 8th grade students are welcome to attend any of these presentations as they are identical.  Hawthorn and Frassati students may attend the presentation of their choice as there will not be a presentation at these particular schools.
