Mustang News - March 23, 2018

On behalf to the entire MHS staff, I wish all of our students a restful spring break next week.  When school resumes after break, there will only be 41 days until graduation!  April and May will be a blur of activity.  Enjoy the break and finish strong!

Mundelein Group Interp Going to State
The Mundelein Theatre Group Interpretation team took second place in their sectional competition at Lake Park High School, and will be moving on to the state competition in Peoria on Saturday, March 23. This is the second straight year the team has qualified for the state tournament.  Additionally, eight performers were named to the All-Sectional Cast, which names the top performers in the competition.  Those performers were Allan Rodriguez, Halli Carpender, Dan Haller, Natalie Williams, Joey Salit, Sydney Litka, Abby Smith and Henry Dumblauskas.

Group lnterp is a 30 minute, student-led performance of any literary work. The focal point of the performance is "out" to the audience with limited on-stage focus. The performance is minimal in nature, meaning that performers wear a uniform dress (not costumes) and build a minimalistic set. Sound effects are permitted but no lighting, specific costuming, properties or theater makeup can be used. It is an IHSA sanctioned event where schools compete against other schools with a chance to earn the opportunity to compete at a State Final tournament.

This year the Mundelein team presented The Perks of Being a Wallflower,
which follows observant Charlie as he charts a course through the strange world between adolescence and adulthood, first dates, family drama, and new friends. Devastating loss, young love, and life on the fringe consume Charlie as well as the people around him. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it, Charlie must learn to navigate those wild and at times overwhelming aspects of growing up. Mark Landuyt directs, Sara Gunther is Assistant Director.

MHS students earn cash prizes at Mayor’s Math Challenge
Several Mundelein High School students earned cash prizes after competing in the Mayor’s Math Challenge on March 18. Sponsored by Mundelein’s Mayor Steve Lentz, the event included the middle schools, MHS and Carmel High School. Each school earned cash prizes for the top three in their school competition and then prizes were also given for the top three finishers overall. Prizes were donated by Mundelein businesses including Garden Fresh, MASC, Rosborough, Wing/Lakeside Lanes, HR Green, Patrick Engineering, TieMart, Northside Bank/Mega, MacLean Fogg, McDonalds, and Hawley Partners/ZAC.

In the Junior Varsity division Nathan Clapp took first place from MHS and earned $750 while Sean Phelan took second with $500 and Sarah Larson placed third for $250. Overall, competing with Carmel, Clapp placed second earning another $1,000 and Phelan tied with a Carmel student who received $375 each.

In the Varsity division among MHS students Tyler Collins took first place and earned $1,000; Komol Patel took second place at $750 and Alex Nicki earned $500 for third place.
In overall competition between MHS and Carmel, Collins took second place and claimed a $1,250 prize.

The Mayors Math Challenge is in its fifth year and aims to be an educational and fun event that generates excitement among students, parents and teachers.

Activities

Spring Testing
Please note, MHS will host spring testing on April 10, 2018.  11th grade students will take the SAT and 10th grade students will take the PSAT.  9th and 12th grade students will not have school on this day.

From the Nurse’s office to all parents of 11th graders
We ask that you provide proof of your student receiving the second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine as soon as possible unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16 years of age is required.  We highly recommend that this vaccine requirement be completed and medical proof be turned into the nursing office before the last day of their 11th grade. Families that wait too long for their student to receive this requirement by the first day of the school year for 2018-2019 will put their student at risk being excluded from school until this requirement has been met. Supplies of this vaccine runs low or out closer to the deadline, so please take steps to have this done as soon as possible.  We thank you very much for your cooperation.

Percussion Ensembles
Percussion Ensembles had a great workshop with Mr. Kevin Lepper on Thursday, March 15th. Mundelein Night of Percussion on Monday, April 30th will feature one of Mr. Lepper's compositions.

Track/Field - Boys
The end of a long, but very successful, weekend of track. The boys' team performed really well, out-doing a lot of my expectations in the process. The 4 x 800 relay started things off with a bang, running 8:08.07 and, following a disqualification, winning the event. This was a 12 second drop of our best time this season, and all four of our runners, Kaleb Carlson, Carter Schorr, Aidan Afonso, and Mikey Parduhn, all PR'd in the race. Mikey came back to take 2nd in the open 800 meters, with a time of 2:01.96. Trevor Werner, running in a slower heat, took 6th overall with a huge PR of 2:04.0.

Isaiah Wellman had a great race in the 55m, winning his heat and narrowly (.01 seconds) missing the finals, running 6.77. Isaiah came back to lead 3 freshman- Shawn Patrick, Joey Foreman, and Syam Atade- in a 12th place finish in the 4 x 200 Relay. Three freshmen, wow! Robert St. Clair ran a really smart race in the 3200m, leading to a victory in 9:39.45. Dillon Blake continued his comeback from injury, taking 8th in 10:04.99.

The 4 x 400 ran a really inspired race, taking 4th from the 2nd heat. Diego Lyles, Trevor Werner, Carter Schorr, and Mikey Parduhn (in his 3rd race), ran 3:40.43, fastest of the season, and faster than predicted. I saved the best for last, because NOBODY had a better day than Mateusz Brak! Mateusz started his day with a PR in the 55 hurdles, running 9.09 and taking 14th overall.

Then the fun really began, as Monty started clearing heights in the High Jump. In fact, Monty didn't miss a jump until he reached 6'4", clearing everything on his first try. When no one cleared that height, Monty was in a tie for 1st, requiring a jump-off. For those of you unfamiliar with this, the remaining jumpers begin with the missed height. If both miss, the bar goes down an inch at a time until one jumper clears it. Following several misses by both jumpers, the pressure was really on! Jumping first, Monty cleared 5'11", resulting in a huge cheer. The other jumper missed, giving Monty the win! This was not only a 4" PR for Monty, but also meets the qualifying height for outdoor State! As a team, Mundelein took 3rd out of over 35 teams with 47 points! That's 3 points more than last year.
