Seven MHS student artists to vie for coveted scholarships
Seven Mundelein High School students will be among the best 1,000 student artists from 125+ Illinois high schools when they showcase their art and vie for more than $20 million in college scholarships at the fifth annual Illinois High School Art Exhibition [IHSAE].  Representing MHS are Sydney Blackmer, Garret Cohen, Katelyn Culp, Mathilde Hanchard, Rebecca Panos, Ryan Story and Cindy Szabo. They will showcase their artwork at the exhibit and qualify to earn one of the available scholarships. The show runs from February 12 through March 9 at the Zhou B Art Center and Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood.

The exhibition’s main general exhibition event will take place Sunday, Feb. 25 and will feature ceremonies, early college scholarship announcements, awards presentations and college recruitments at the Zhou B Art Center and senior scholarship announcements at the Bridgeport Art Center.
“The scholarships will continue a robust IHSAE tradition that has facilitated $80 million plus cumulatively for more than 900 students since our first event in 2014,” said Chris Sykora, co-creator of IHSAE, which uniquely collaborates with public, private and charter high schools and more than 35 college art schools nationwide.

The IHSAE is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is the advancement of visual arts education through exhibition. Developed by teachers for students in 2014, the organization is run by full-time art educators who collaborate with corporate sponsors, art schools/colleges/universities/ and participating public, private and charter high schools to celebrate and award the artistic talents of Illinois high school art students.

A crazy comedy at Mundelein Theatre
What is the perfect remedy for the winter blahs? How about a hilarious romp through the mind of a playwright who can’t shake his writers block? Mundelein Theatre will present Figments, by Billy St. John. This comedy will play on the Mundelein High School Auditorium stage on February 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. and February 9 at 3:45pm. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The matinee performance on Friday is only $1 for MHS students. Additionally, there will be a performance on February 10 at 2 p.m. which will feature the understudy cast of Figments. Tickets can be purchased at the box office 30 minutes prior to each performance. Seating is general admission, and the theatre will open 20 minutes prior to each performance. Additional information can be found at mundeleintheatre.org.

“Figments is very Walter Mitty-esque, as our protagonist, Rick, is the only one who can see the craziness around him as the characters in his imagination take over his life.” said Jonathan Meier, the play’s director.   “The play is a nice combination of a sweet love story, combined with some crazy broad comedy,” said senior Dan Haller, who plays Rick. “The biggest challenge for me is that I have to be onstage pretending to not see all the nuttiness that is going on around me,” said senior Maddie Martorana, who plays Rick’s’ love interest, Loni.  “It takes a lot of concentration.”
Other seniors in the cast are Joshua Saunders, Emily Saunders, Ryan Story, Brianna Moderhack, Ginny Zundel and Henry Dumblauskas.  Rounding out the cast are Jake Cumberland, Sydney Litka, Colin Nacion, Natalie Williams, Halli Carpender and Allan Rodriquez.  The stage manager is Josie Hutson and the assistant directors are Rachel Larson and Miriam Mitry.  The understudy cast consists of Matthew Callas, Sierra Bouchard, Katie Staroszczyk, Colby Willis, Mary McMurray, Trevor Freeman, Steven Weiss, Annalise Welsch, Bella Buono, Roy Dumblauskas, Charlie Dennis, Alexis Lee, Brandon Neyzelman and Ashley Carrier.  The understudy Stage Manager is Joslyn Gange.

Mundelein High School Honors Bands worked with clinician, Dr. Joe Manfredo, on Tuesday, February 6th.

Student Leadership-Movie Night
As a part of the Winter Dance festivities, Student Leadership is inviting all students to a night out at the movies on Tuesday, February 20th.  This event is free to all students.  Since the theme for the Winter Dance this year is Casino Royale, in keeping with the casino theme, we will be watching Ocean’s 11.  All freshman who attend will receive free popcorn and a free drink which can redeem with the coupon they will receive from Link Crew.  The movie starts at 6:30pm in the Auditorium so bring some friends and enjoy a fun night out.

College Planning Events Taking Place Next Week

Monday, February 12 and Tuesday, February 13 our College Counselor, Andrea Rusk, is hosting two events to help our families better prepare for the college application process. See details below.

February 13 - College Planning Night for Juniors, Open to ALL Grade Levels
There is an amazing opportunity coming up  at 7pm on Tuesday, February 13 and if you have a student planning to attend college, I hope that you will attend!  This event is focused on junior students who will be starting to apply to colleges this summer, but it is greatly beneficial for any underclass families who want to get a jump start on having all the pieces in place for college applications. The panel members will be discussing general tips and tricks that all students can use to improve their college applications.

The event will involve an interactive panel discussion  with admissions counselors from six higher education institutions. The panelists have admissions and educational experience with and can speak about the following institutions:  Aurora University, Eureka College, Governors State University, Grand Valley State University, Illinois College, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Indiana State University , Northland College, Northern Michigan University, Prairie State College, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, The College of St. Benedict, St. John’s University, University of Louisville and University of Maryland.

In addition, they harness educational & professional experience outside of the United States (Universite de Droit,d’Economiet des Sciences D’Aix-Marseille, France and Universidade de Caxias do Sul, Brazil, Beijing, China,  Tokyo, Japan and Venezuela).  Furthermore, they can offer information about international students and information about study abroad options.  Plus, one of the panel’s “crew” members speaks fluent Spanish.

As you can see, they have experience with in-state, out-of-state, public, private, large, medium, small, selective, and international & community colleges.  They also have experiences & represent schools that have NCAA DI-DIII Athletics.  Some crew members are near recent graduates, in & out of grad school, former teachers and coaches, as well as parents of high school and college aged children.  They are a very well rounded group, and this is a truly unique and wonderful opportunity!

The presentation will be taking place on Tuesday, February 13th at 7pm in the MHS Auditorium.

Athletics

Hall of Fame
Mundelein High School coach and teacher, Todd Parola, was inducted into the Lake County High School Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the College of Lake County. He is being recognized for both his athletic career at Grayslake Central High School and for his experience as a coach at Mundelein High School.
The official ceremony took place during halftime of the CLC Boys Basketball game against Elgin Community College. While at MHS Parola was best known for his coaching of successful baseball and golf teams. He has also coached a number of other sports during his career. Parola resigned from baseball last summer after a second appearance in a row at state. He continues to serve as head boy’s golf coach.

Wrestling
Mundelein takes 2nd at Dundee-Crown. The usual suspects led Mundelein to a second-place finish on Saturday in Carpentersville. Dane Durlacher (106, 38-0), Reese Durlacher (126, 35-3) and Logan Kvien (182, 34-4) were the Mustangs' three regional champions. In all, Mundelein sent six wrestlers to sectionals. "I think, for all of us, it's a confidence thing that we know we can win every time out," said Dane Durlacher, who is ranked No. 2 among Class 3A 106-pounders by IllinoisMatmen.com. Dane Durlacher said improved conditioning and a strict diet have enabled his impressive run. He said he has cut out fast foods in favor of eating more fruits and drinking more water. "All of that, as well as being more relaxed and less stressed is the big reason for the season I've had thus far," he said.

Bowling
MHS sent four bowlers to the IHSA Regional Girls Bowling hosted in Waukegan. Although the girls didn’t advance we are very proud of them. Congratulations to Ella MacKay, Grace Krusinski, Madeline Wade and Carly Zentz. Mundelein is looking to start Girls and Boys Bowling next school year.
