Recognition

MHS yearbook earns three state awards from IJEA
Mundelein High School’s 2017 yearbook, Obelisk, recently won three awards from a state-wide competition run by the Illinois Journalism Education Association [IJEA] with 60 schools participating.

The staff took third place in copy writing. In this category, judges considered feature articles, leads, quotes and how “clean” the copy was written.

The Obelisk received an Honorable Mention in the photography category, considered to be one of the most competitive categories in the competition. The judges reported that the best books were diverse in covering the whole of their school and the full and various sub-groups that make up the schools.
The yearbook earned another Honorable Mention in the Coverage of the Year category. The judges said the best books provided a feel for what it is like to be a student or staff member at the school. It also showed both in pictures and in stories those students and staffers in action.

“Within our division, we were up against some very stiff competition with schools that have large journalism programs and who enter competitions frequently,” said Michelle Didzbalis, Obelisk advisor. “This was our first ever and we walked away with three awards!,” she said.

College and Career Resource Center

Students are invited to come to the CCRC, in B103, before school, during lunch, during study hall, after school or by appointment to get information and plan for college. Students of all grade levels are encouraged to come in at any time to plan for their future. We offer assistance with all aspects of the college application process, including narrowing down choices, working through applications, checking essays, discussing financial concerns and scholarships, talking about standardized tests, working with potential college athletes, discussing military options, helping students connect with people at the university and more.  Parents can also access all resources in the CCRC, please call in advance so that we can ensure we will be available to assist you.

This year we will be hosting spring college representative visits beginning on February 26 and ending March 23.  Junior students are strongly encouraged to attend these visits and speak with the representatives to be prepared to apply early in their senior year.  Not only is it beneficial to receive information to plan, but it puts you on the university’s radar as a student who is interested, which can have a positive impact on your application! Students register in Naviance and attend the visit in the CCRC (B103), no passes are necessary.  Their attendance is excused, though they are expected to make up any missed work.

Juniors who would like to have a one on one college planning session with Mrs. Rusk can schedule a time beginning in February.  Parents are welcome to attend as well and can be included via phone conference if that is a better option. Email arusk@d120.org to find a time to meet and get a plan in place before summer!

Schedule an appointment to meet with our ISAC representative, Jhoanna Vega-Rocha, every other Tuesday from 9am - 2pm, beginning February 6th here at MHS in the CCRC for personal assistance, or check out resources on the CCRC webpage and through students’ Naviance accounts. Jhoanna can be reached at jhoanna.vega-rocha@isac.illinois.gov.

We are happy to offer a series of evening events for all families who are working through the college planning process.  These events are open for parents and students, Freshmen through Seniors, to help you feel more comfortable and confident about college planning and applications.
