Activities

Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble will be performing at the Chicago Jazz Showcase on Wednesday, November 8th.  The Jazz Showcase is the oldest historic jazz club in Chicago, IL founded in 1947.  The greatest names in jazz have played at the showcase including, Count Basie, Dexter Gorgon, Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Milt Jackson, Chris Potter and many more!  It will be very exciting for the students in the jazz ensemble to perform in such an iconic venue.

Coexist club
Coexist came together and in honor of Hispanic Heritage month, we created "Papel Picado".  These special cut out designs are a traditional decoration for the celebration of the Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos.  Students had fun creating these tradition pieces to add to the altar in Mrs. Kolcz and Ms. Mendez' classroom.  As you walk in the room, the decorations greet you with bright colors and happiness.  Coexist enjoys being a part of the MHS community and looks forward to celebrating and learning about more cultural traditions as the year progresses!

Student to hear about Syrian refugee camp life
Cathy Amin, owner of the Picnic Basket in Libertyville, will speak about life in a Syrian refugee camp and the personal stories of five refugees she befriended there. Four presentations will be made during lunch periods Friday, Nov. 3, which go from 10:35 am to 2:10 pm in the District Meeting Room.

Amin was driven by the stories coming from Syria so she applied for and was granted the opportunity to volunteer as a camp kitchen supervisor in Alexandria, Greece. The camp is a temporary home to more than 800 victims of Syria’s civil war. The audiences will be AVID students along with MHS staff members
