Culture of Reading - September 1, 2017

Often it is may be difficult to see the impact a teacher has on a student.  There are so many messages, conflicting interest, and only so much time.  However, it is clear that in the past few years, the MHS English Department has established itself with a great influence on students' participation in reading.  The message is simple - JUST READ!

MHS English teachers encourage students to read books of their choice, acknowledging that students are much more likely to read a book they are interested in rather than told to read.  This philosophy has not only changed how teachers use novels to support the teaching of literary elements, but has dramatically increased the number of books students read each year.  Case in point, over 1,300 books have been checked out of the library in the first two weeks of school.

Book Talks
All students enrolled in English classes took part in “book talks” throughout the department on Friday, August 25. Students were asked to read at least one book of their choice over summer vacation. Students then shared that book with their peers during the book talks in small groups that mixed students of all ages and grade levels. The book talks offer students the opportunity to participate in an authentic activity to share their reading experiences and also provide students titles of books they may want to include on their next-read lists.

What's Your Passion

Mark Landuyt
Mark Landuyt, English Teacher

My passion stems from a belief that reading is at the heart of academic success, human development,
and that all students can find enjoyment from reading.  I say this from being a non-reader for most of my first 12 years of school.  My passion is centered in the eliminating of the "I am bad at ___" mindset.  When it comes to reading and writing, my job is is to affect change, create nuance, context, and hopefully, change the "I can't" to  "I can".

Upcoming Visits and Events at MHS

NCAA Night
On Wednesday, September 6th MHS is hosting the annual NCAA informational evening for the North Suburban Conference. The purpose of this event is to provide information that high school athletes need to know if they are interested in eventually participating in college athletics, regardless of level.  Individuals from NCAA member institutions will be on hand to give a presentation and answer questions and handouts will be provided.

Meeting with College Representatives is Beneficial!
Tomorrow, the first of many college representatives from across the country will start visiting Mundelein High School to speak to prospective students.  These visits are open to all students who are interested in pursuing any of the post-secondary institutions who come join us.  We strongly encourage attendance at these events as it provides an opportunity for students to receive information directly from the source and can be an opportunity to demonstrate interest in a school, which can be quite beneficial in the application process!

Viewing Upcoming Visits and Registering for a Visit
To register to attend a visit, students simply click the Colleges tab in their Naviance account, then click view all upcoming visits on the right side of the screen.  Find the visit that you wish to attend and select sign up.  Finally, click the sign me up button and print your confirmation screen.  This final step is extremely important as the CCRC only has seating for 15-18 students.  If we notice that the number of students signed up for the visit exceeds this, we will find a larger space to host the event and email all students who have signed up with the update.  If the number rises at the last minute, the room may be “standing room only,” but we will never turn anyone away!

If parents would like to view all upcoming visits, you can click the Naviance tab on the MHS homepage and select “I’m a guest” in the upper right corner.  You will then select the Colleges tab and view all upcoming visits.

The Day of the Visit
On the day of the visit, you will report directly to the CCRC or location listed at the beginning of the period.  If you lose your pass you can always go in and cancel your visit, then follow the same process again to sign up.  If you happen to have lunch during the time of the visit we will allow you to bring your lunch to the CCRC but ask that you are mindful of allergies and do not bring any food with nuts.  If you are unable to attend but would still like information, let us know and we can gather materials for you.

Following the Visit
Please note that it is your responsibility to speak to your teacher prior to the event to let them know that you wish to attend and find out what you may be missing.  Most visits allow a small amount of time at the end of the period for students to return to class. Following the visit, it is also a nice idea to send a thank you note to the representative you met with.

Remember, you will receive a reminder email about any schools that are in your “Colleges I’m Thinking About” list if they schedule a time to come in. The visits will also be announced daily, so listen to the announcements for reminders!
