MHS hires new assistant principal
The Mundelein High School District 120 Board of Education has hired Anthony Crespo as its new assistant principal. He will replace Jesús Tirado who resigned earlier this year. Crespo will begin his position July 1, 2017.

Crespo is currently serving as principal of the East Aurora High School Extension Campus in Aurora, IL, a position he began in 2015. Prior to that he was assistant principal of student supports at Proviso West High School and assistant principal of student life and athletics at Proviso East High School. From 2004 to 2012 he worked as a physical education instructor, athletic director, teacher mentor and basketball coach in Osceola County, Florida. He was also named District Level Minority Teacher of the Year in Osceola, Florida in 2006.

Crespo holds a bachelor of science degree in international business from Ramapo College of New Jersey and a master of science in education, educational leadership from Walden University. He is also fluent in Spanish.

“I am looking forward to joining the Mundelein High School family,” Crespo said. “What attracted me to MHS was the strong evidence of its investment in students. I can tell that the MHS staff doesn’t take learning for granted,” he explained. “I was also able to see that the staff and administration have high expectations for all students and won’t accept leaving anyone behind. That’s the kind of district where I want to work,” he concluded.

“We are happy to have Anthony Crespo join our administrative team at Mundelein High School,” said Principal Anthony Kroll. “He brings a wide variety of experience and a proven record of success. We look forward to welcoming him to our district.”

MHS hires three new varsity coaches
At its April 26 meeting, the Mundelein High School District 120 Board of Education authorized the hiring of varsity head coaches for boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling. All join the coaching staff with previous experience.

“During the interview process, our final candidates rose to the top because of their personal integrity and the culture and climate that they hope to bring to our athletic programs,” said Troy Parola, athletic director at MHS.

Matthew Badgley will take over the boys basketball program. Currently Assistant Principal/Dean of Students at Wauconda High School, Badgley holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University and a master’s degree from Lindenwood University in Missouri. He is completing a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Concordia University – Chicago. He has past experience in administration at Lebanon Community Unit District #9, Hazelwood East High School and Collinsville High School. He was head varsity boys basketball coach at Trico High School and Lebanon High School and assistant coach at Hazelwood East and Pinckneyville high schools. He also coached varsity golf for four years at Hazelwood.

“We look forward to Matt directing our boys basketball program,” Parola said. “We spoke with college basketball coaches in the Big 10 and Big 12 who gave strong recommendations concerning Matt’s leadership style,” he explained.

Greg Dorgan will lead the varsity girls basketball program. Currently the mathematics department chair at Wauconda High School, Dorgan will join the mathematics faculty at MHS. He holds a bachelors degree in mathematics secondary education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a masters degree in educational leadership from Northeastern Illinois University. While at Wauconda Dorgan has served as interim head varsity girls basketball coach, head coach for sophomore and freshman boys basketball and junior varsity boys basketball. He has also coached girls basketball at Matthews Middle School in Island Lake and freshman boys basketball at Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect.

Craig Stocker is the new MHS varsity wrestling coach. He is currently the head coach and physical education teacher at Lakes High School in Lake Villa. He will also join the PE department at MHS. He also has previous teaching/coaching experience at Fremd and Stevenson high schools.

Stocker holds a bachelors degree in kinesiology with a major in physical education. He has coached wrestling at Lakes since 2012 where he has also coached track and football.

“I’m excited to bring these three individuals to key leadership roles within our coaching positions at MHS. I’m confident that they will teach, coach and mentor our many fine student athletes,” Parola concluded.

Activities

Students Learn about safe driving through assembly and use of simulators
Mundelein High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions [SADD] partnered with the Save a Life Tour to help students understand the dangers of impaired driving. An all-day awareness program took place Monday, April 24 as a prelude to the Prom set for Friday, May 5.

“The target audience for this event was juniors and seniors, as they [primarily] will be our prom attendees,” said Ryan Buck, SADD advisor.

The activities began with a homeroom assembly where students witnessed the dangers of impaired driving. It was followed by the use of simulators in the main gym for students to experience “hands on” examples of these dangers.

“Our goal was to raise awareness for students to continue making good decisions by avoiding the temptation of drugs and alcohol, but then not getting behind the wheel,” Buck explained.

The Save a Life Tour is a comprehensive high impact safe driving awareness program that informs, educates and demonstrates the potentially deadly consequences resulting from poor choices and decisions made by the operator of a motor vehicle. The program emphasizes driver experience, improper driver behavior, safety restraints, impaired driving, distracted driving and motorcycle operation.

MHS says thanks to local business leaders
Mundelein High School hosted its third annual Mustang DOORS appreciation dinner April 18 in the MHS cafeteria. DOORS [Doors of Opportunity Relevant to Students] is a program that provides opportunities for students to have “real world” exposure and experience through student internships, the technology support internship [TSI], and the business incubator courses.

In addition to the evening meal, with piano music provided by students Beth Aquino and Kelsey Kroening, students Sheridan McGuire, Celeste Cruickshank and Liz Ayala spoke about TSI, business incubator and internship respectively. The keynote address was presented by local entrepreneur Sedrik Newbern of Allstate Insurance who is also a motivational speaker.

The event was planned by Rosangela Fiore, MHS community coordinator, while Fine and Applied Arts Department Chair David Mork served as the master of ceremonies.

Mustang Olympics set for Sunday, April 30
Mundelein High School’s Student Leadership will host the Mustang Olympics on Sunday, April 30, from noon to 4 p.m. on the athletic field.
The Mustang Olympics will consist of a series of athletic competitions where teams compete for prizes and “glory.” Some of the events will be a dodgeball tournament, punt, pass and kick competition, homerun derby, obstacle course, and many more.
Teams will be made up of 6 to 10 people. Each team will have a minimum of three female team members.
There will be two competition brackets, Varsity (teams made up of a majority of upperclassmen) and Junior Varsity (teams made up of a majority of underclassmen).

MHS music department to present Mundelein Night of Percussion
Mundelein High School’s instrumental music department will present its Mundelein Night of Percussion Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. The concert will include the Drum Line, solos and duets and a Mallet Ensemble. The concert is free.

Andrew Sturgeon and Jerald Shelato direct the instrumental music program. The Percussion Ensemble is directed by Ryan Jacobi.

Final choral concert to feature seven MHS choirs
For its final concert of the year, the vocal music department at Mundelein High School will put the spotlight on all seven of its choirs. The groups to perform include the Treble Choir, Bel Canto, Concert Choir, Master Singers, Mundelein Sound, Mundelein Lights and SoundFX. The Wednesday, May 3 concert is free and begins at 7 p.m.

Each of the three show choirs will perform a new song, the Treble Choir and Bel Canto will combine to sing two pieces from the hit Disney movie, Moana. In addition, a slideshow of the seniors and a recap of the 2016-2017 school year will be shown.

Parking Permit Process for 2017-2018
In order to be eligible to obtain a parking permit students must:

be a senior or junior
be in good standing with all outstanding fees paid and limited parking violations
have a valid driver’s license
have proof of insurance and current registration
have a vehicle
have been selected in the lottery system
have completed the permission slip
have paid for the permit

Parking Permit Options
The non-refundable cost for a 2017-2018 parking permit is $200.00 for a full-year permit and $120 for a single semester permit. The following types of parking permits are available:
full-year permits

1st semester-only permits
2nd semester-only permits

Students are encouraged to apply for a FULL-YEAR parking permit if they're planning on parking on campus the entire year. All 1st semester-only permits will go back into the lottery at the end of the first semester. Students with 1st semester-only parking permits that want to park on campus for semester 2 are required to enter the lottery for 2nd semester permits. There is no guarantee that a 2nd semester-only permit will be available. The 2nd semester lottery takes place the week before the 1st semester is over.

A 4-step lottery system is used to determine which students receive parking permits:

Marquette University joins CLC’s Guaranteed Transfer Admission program
The College of Lake County and Marquette University in Milwaukee recently signed a Guaranteed Transfer Admission agreement. CLC students who transfer to Marquette to complete a bachelor’s degree will be guaranteed acceptance while completing the requirements in their particular degree. Boys Gymnastics
Congratulations to the Boys Gymnastics team on their Conference Championship title!

Boys/Girls Track & Field
Friday night the boys were at the Lake Zurich Invite, and had their best ever finish in this meet, taking 3rd.

Highlights:
Bobby Nuzzo ruled the 100 and 200 again, winning both in times of 10.98 and 22.20. Aaron Woolford also placed in the 100, taking 7th in 11.58. Alan Salgado took 5th in the 800, running 2:05.18. The 1600 saw us score big points as Mikey Parduhn went 2/3. Mikey's time of 4:29.84 ...was a PR as well as the first time he dipped under 4:30. We received a surprise point as Kevin Garcia took 8th, dropping around 2 minutes from his PR, running 10:39.15! Sal Roman brought home points in both hurdles races, taking 6th in the 110 highs, and 3rd in the 300 hurdles in a PR time of 40.78. Both 4 x 100 relay teams fared well as the F/S team of Ray Brinkerhoff, Alonso Diaz, Mat Empalmado and Adonis Hagedorn took 4th, while the Varsity squad of Isaiah Wellman, Tristan Empalmado, Charles Nacion, and Booby Nuzzo took 2nd in a time of 43.43. The 4 x 200 saw similar results as the F/S team of Ray Brinkerhoff, Adonis Hagedorn, Caleb Kowalewski, and Armando Jimenez took 6th, and the varsity group took 2nd , led by Aaron Woolford, Isaiah Wellman, Sal Roman, and Bobby Nuzzo. Both 4 x 800 teams took 2nd, as the F/S team of Dillon Blake, Aidan Afonso, Sean Finerty, and Aaron DeLara ran 8:50.06, and the Varsity team of Dario Carrillo, Robert St. Clair, Alan Salgado, and Ben Krauss ran 8:13.84. In the Field Events, Mitch Sharer scored in both the Shot Put and Discus. Mitch took 8th in the Shot, throwing a PR of 46'9", and 5th in the Discus with a throw of 145'2.5", which I believe is a PR as well (mom can confirm). Alex Hurtado took 8th in the F/S Discus with a PR of 110'9". In the F/S High Jump, Jason Pietrusiewicz finished in 7- yes 7 way tie for 3rd with a jump of 5'1". Aaron Woolford took 3rd in the Long Jump with a jump of 20'7", while Mat Empalmado took 4th in the F/S Long Jump with a leap of 18'4". Shane Kosmach provided another win, taking 1st in the Triple Jump with a jump of 41'. Mat Empalmado provided the final points of the night by taking 3rd in the F/S Triple Jump, jumping 37'6". Saturday evening a few members of the boys' team competed Saturday evening in the Palatine Distance Night Meet. This meet involves only distance events, and requires competitors to meet minimum standards to be allowed to compete. We brought both our sophomore 3200 meter runners, Robert St. Clair and Dario Carrillo. Both Mustangs PRd in their race, with Robert running 9:36.35, and Dario running 9:38.86. Both runners narrowly missed the F/S school record of 9:35.6, run over... 40 years ago by the legendary Dan Skarda in 1975.

They were followed by the Distance Medley Relay, who absolutely killed it, taking 3rd against some top competition. Senior Ben Krauss led off, running 3:13.8 for 1200 meters. Bobby Nuzzo became an Honorary Distance Runner for the night, running the 400 meter leg in a PR of 50.7. Alan Salgado held the team position with a 2:02.6 800 meters leg, and Mikey Parduhn gave Boys Gymnastics
All Boys’ Gymnastics teams competed at the Bob Bohl invitational. Freshman and Varsity teams both were 3rd place out of 16 and 19 teams respectively. Great job guys!

Girls' Track

Girl's Track placed 2nd at Antioch Meet

Highlights-
The 4 x 800 relay of Beth Clow, Leslye Rodriguez, Jeanelle Jimenez, and Marissa Richards started things off with a 4th place finish. Jeanelle contributed a monster PR leg, running 2:37.2. Andrea Cordova followed that with a 3rd place finish in the 3200, running 12:00.0. Kalli Majewski was next up, taking 3rd in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 16.65. Bree Park also ...contributed a 6th place finish with a time of 18.12. The 100 meters provided the closest finish of the night, as the first 5 girls were all within .13 seconds, with Khari Thompkins in the middles of the mix in 4th.

The 4 x 200 relay exceeded expectations by taking 5th. Yax Sanchez, Mady West, Megan Schlebecker and Bree Park ran 1:55, a second under their seed time. Khari Thompkins ran a PR in the 400, taking 2nd in a time of 59.34. Her time was less than a tenth of a second away form the State Qualifying Standard. Kalli Majewski came back with a win in the 300 hurdles in season's best time of 48.23. Megan Schlebecker also placed, taking 5th in 53.19. Khari came back with a 3rd in the 200, with a time of 26.92. Yax Sanchez also PRd in the race with a time of 29.30. The 4 x 400 closed out the track scoring with a 5th place finish. Taylor Parola came through in the Discus with a 5th place finish, throwing 85'2.5". The final nights' points came from Kalli Majewski, who won the Triple Jump with a jump of 35'9.5".

Varsity played 4 games back to back with no break to capture 1st place at the Glenbrook North Invite. Lukas commandingly led the offense while Westgate, Peterson and Parker were defensive machines. Boys Volleyball

PLEASE, COME AND SUPPORT THE BAKER FAMILY & BEAR NECESSITIES.

On April 28th, 2017 the Boys Volleyball program is hosting a Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation match -vs- Antioch High School in the main Gym about 5:00 pm. We will have a 50/50 raffle that night and will be selling the Bear Necessities Bears for a minimum $20 donation. Donations to enter are $3 Kids $5 Adults in place of selling t shirts. We are playing in this benefit in the memories of Noah Baker (son of Maureen Baker, teacher at Mundelein) and Ian Turkula (2013 Graduate, who lost his fight to Brain Cancer in January 2014). Please, partner with the Volleyball Program to Help Fight Cancer and Find a Cure by coming to the match FRIDAY April 28th and giving a donation in Support of Noah and Ian's memory and the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation who supported them and their families during their battle with Cancer. Both families will be at the fundraiser.

You can make a donation at the bookstore at any time up to the Event. Donations are tax deductible and checks should be made out to the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
